I guess we're not much of a jazz rock forum, much less a pure jazz forum here, or someone would have put this up earlier. I don't profess to be a jazz rock buff, I have the usual crossover suspects in my CD collection (the kind of stuff you tend to have even if otherwise you prefer listening to Black Sabbath
): Miles Davis, Mahavishnu, Return to Forever, Billy Cobham, Hancock, Alphonso Mouzon, Jaco, Weather Report, Jean-Luc Ponty, Colosseum (I + II), Stanley Clarke, Al Di Meola, George Benson etc.
But I always liked his liquid playing. And coming from a hard rock background, I found it easier to latch onto RTF's macho instrumental prowess than to, say, the more airy Weather Report.
