Looks like someone installed an impedance transformer.

Nice looking Les Paul Bass.

I've never found the weight a problem. It balances very well.

The weight didn't worry me either - the skinny neck was the reason I sold mine.

I  think the neck is a bit chunkier, (bat like) on my 69, than it is on my Triumph. Mine came with a mic transformer soldered in also.
