The five acts that we (the fans) choose become one of 600 ballots? Sounds like Soviet style democracy.

It's a pittance to be sure.  I think symbolic more than real, actually.

I voted for Purple, Heart, King, Chic and Martha.  Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards various productions should be enough to get them in the HOF.  Plus Edwards "Good Times" bassline was good enough for Queen.

The RRHOF has admitted a number of acts I don't regard as rock & roll. I imagine many fans who are voting may feel that way about Chic.

Probably the best set of choices I've seen, though I haven't ever paid that much attention. Would have gone for Kraftwerk too, but only 5 per voter...

I like anything Nile Rodgers played on, even when he was omnipresent in the eighties, bowie, Chic, Sisters Sledge, Diana Ross ... He was rumored to have done the rhythm guitar on George McCrae's Rock me Baby too, but that was later on denied. Could have been him though. I even bought his solo album Land of the Good Groove when it was rereleased some years ago. The Chic live album from Japan with Slash guesting rocks. I'm fine with him and he who may not be named in every thread being honored in one place. Uwe, ze fünkster!

I've played with a lot of guitarists, but never with one who could even coarsely emulate his rhythm style.

Consign that to the dustbin holding the Jimmy Page playing the solo on 'You Really Got Me' myth.  The guitarist was Jerome Smith from K.C. and the Sunshine Band.  Track was cut in 45 minutes and originally intended to be a demo.

Jerome was great on all of the KC stuff.  Very sad that he is no longer with us.

Purple were never cool with journos or critics, unlike Zep they had no mystique to them, no Alistair Crowley fans and no fancy symbols. No drug scandals either except with Tommy Bolin, but by then Purple were regarded as unfashionable rock dinosaurs and Punk was looming.

Dave, I know Dick Dale was not a chart-topper, but for lifetime achievement and starting a whole musical genre - I think it fits.

I doubt it will happen, though.

Yeah, the Ramones may be the only non-charting artists to be inducted, and some people thought that may have been more because of Joey's death.

I don't know if it's fair to say Dick started surf music, but he was certainly one of the early pioneers. For sure it wouldn't be what is is without his influence.
