Faster Car

Keith Urban on a Les Paul Standard. Somebody posted this at the TDPRI wondering what the bass was, thought I'd put it up here. Song doesn't start until about 45 seconds in.

Urban (a/k/a Mr. Nicole Kidman) is supposed to be a country singer. This doesn't sound anything remotely like the country music that was played when I was growing up  :-\ , but whatever... it's a Gibson, and I'm entertained.

Quirkily sliding little fellow he is. I'm entertained too. I even bought one of his CDs a while back, but that overstayed its welcome quickly.

Love the honeyburst Les Paul.
Love his sliding bass riff.
Pretty cool singing and playing at the same time, by the way.

But I'm not sure if I like that squeezed bridge tone. Not enough warmth...

Nice bass tone, almost sounds fretless or using some sort octave pedal?

Lps are great under appreciated basses.

Keith is a great guitarist as well. Country music I can listen to, if you want to call it that.

I'm always impressed when someone can play a busy bass part like that AND sing at the same time. Paul McCartney was always good at that.

I just wish I could do simple backing vocals whilst playing root notes - but hey it's never gonna happen

I hear ya in that respect ELJ.  I would love to be able to sing slightly well let alone play nice lines at the same time myself.

Best thing I've ever seen Mr Kidman do is his double act with the John Butler Trio at the 2007 Aria Music Awards (Aust version of the Grammies)

Its long but worth watching to the end.

Someone had to ask what THAT bass was? Damn, maybe someone needs to get out more (or see a few live bands).

I haven't paid much attention to Keith urban, and didn't know he played bass.  But he has some serious chops!  I wasn't aware of the John Butler trio either, but "them boyz knows how to play in fast forward!!"

John Butler Trio is (was) a Perth Band. His (Aussie) Dad married an American woman and he was born in California but came back to Oz about age 10 I think.

My five year old was telling me tonight that Keith Urban is her fav singer.  As far a new country goes, he's not so bad.  She loved the video, by the way.

Driving bass playing! A bit like guitar players tend to play bass. A lot of everything...
