Post by: godofthunder on May 29, 2009, 01:02:10 PM
Ken those were awesome ! Yes of course we want to see Gene ! I wish I had a camera at the early KISS gig I went to but I still have the T shirt ! As I recall it cost about twice as much as the tickets for the show !

Any old pics of KISS are cool by me. Certainly better than any new ones...   ;)

I saw Kiss on their very first Chicago appearance.  They were at the local high school, and there were no fire marshalls present.  We got the full show.  Tickets were a mere $4.  By the end of the show, the gym floor was destroyed, and it had to be replaced.  Opening was Rush, who were actually pretty awful.

That'll teach me... more scanning and will comply...  ;D

If there are specific images anybody wants, just send word and I'll e a bigger shot once they are cleaned up - I don't have any fancy software, but it does enough for me...

Cleaned up a bit but not finished... lots more to do as the repairs are taking time...

These shots show the band that turned me into an obsessive fan as an eleven year old. I love these shots!

Are those folded horns behind him?  For some reason I always thought he used the standard Ampeg 8x10s

Those and similar cabs were pretty popular in the seventies to generate the sublows regular cabs could not provide at the time. Roger Glover got his thunderous lows with Martin bins.

Bass amplification has gone quite some way. These days, even small rigs can deliver bladder-stirring sublows.

I own a Punisher and the J pup on it is almost like an afterthought. Simmons never needed one, but got talked into adding one on the marketed model to add a little value for money. The output of that EMG J pup even though active is laughably low compared to the split coil. Put both on and you have lowered punch and volume with a faint click. Not a great mix, less is sometimes more.

Okay I get the message.

But since there was a question asked about Gene's Amplification I chimed in. I found a 1978 Guitarplayer interview with Gene where he said that his backline consisted of Sunn Colloseum heads and cabs.

It is a Model One - the earliest ones were silver, and I've never seen one in the flesh.

Been busy and still not finished scanning (negs at 7200dpi is chunky and trying to do basic repairs... ) - I asked for it...

Back when ready...

ps, Dave... if the shots are taken by the "gang" (as in Lowends) and from the same era, the more the merrier...   ;D   ;D

That was back when a regular guy could still get 1st row tix for a concert at MSG - or anywhere, for that matter. They cost big money, too - $20 from a local ticket broker. ;D

The Hammersmith photo's were great!  I sent them to my guitar player (who has 3 Destroyers from 1976) and he has never seen a photo of Ace with the Alive costume playing one.  Too cool!

He switched to those folded horns for the ALIVE! tour and kept them at least through ALIVE! II. Good technology for a PA system at the time, terrible for a bass rig.

Nope, Ace's destroyer came with a white pickguard, the one with the Black guard was a custom order Gibson with a flamed maple top.

Nice pics! My dad took me to see Kiss in '77 or '78 at Cumberland County Memorial Auditoreum in Fayetteville, NC. He bought a KISS logo belt buckle and I bought a tour book, both of which I still have. The tour book even has the KISS ARMY iron-on still inside!

Our school's student body president was there near the front and when Gene or Paul smashed his guitar to pieces, he got the neck and headstock!

Must have been Paul, he's the one who does the smashing act at the end of every performance, but the guitars he smashes are props, prepped to snap on impact.

Gee, and I thought I'd heard Paul actually playing those guitars during Rock and Roll All Night when I've seen them those multiple times over the last 25 years.

The guitars Paul breaks are cheaper models and he may have decided to be even more phony about it in his old age (by having them 'prepped'), but there was a time when that wasn't the case.

Since we're talking: It was Herr Blackmore who invented smashing cheapies and (real) no-goodies during Purple when those jewish kids from Queens were still touring NYC clubs and being sold as third rate New York Dolls.

With Kiss, I never saw the guitar smashing as more than a hasty afterthought gimmick, part of their whole show concept, I saw none of that intense love/hate relationship Hendrix, Townshend and Blackmore had with their guitars. Paul really isn't a person that likes to smash things (or is frustrated by his guitar playing during shows or elated by it). I was more impressed by the blood spitting and fire breathing I must say. No other band did that.

I have a pic from a magazine around somewhere that shows a backstage shot of a stack of Gibson boxes and a Marauder leaning up against it (Paul's choice in the 70s for destruction). As I recall, he would play the song with his regular guitar, and then disappear offstage during the ending - reappearing shortly thereafter with "prop" instrument. If you watch videos of this, he will swing the guitar over his head and hit the floor with the edge of the body several times before flipping the instrument into position to impact the face of the guitar when he brought it down. It would usually break on the first try in that position.

At least Pete Townshend used real Coral guitars for his destruction, and Black Oak Arkansas bought Ventura guitars by the case for the grand finale of each show.

Gary... I still have my "One Square Inch Of Heaven On Earth" deed, and a quad copy of the LP, but I never got to see them...

Lowend... I guess you were a lucky fan, because you got some nice shots (including the Foghat's) ... I have some like that, but one artist at a time...  ;)

Uwe... You mentioned "Martin Bins"... for around 8 weeks of my life (in the summer of '82 - a nasty song with the words "get down on it" was constantly blaring through some saddo's megablaster - one of the assemblers used to be a gardener for George Harrison...?) I worked for a company that built them (the carcasses), also the shells for Trace-Elliot combos (2x10...?) and the PA system for that years Iron Maiden tour - I think they were called Acoustic Solutions... I didn't get on with being an assembly-line worker and got "released" (polite word for "sacked") ... My post British Airways (Oct 81 - March 83) time was spent trying to go pro musician and failing, so I went back to work... lots of odd jobs to pay the bills...

Still scanning... going back thru and rescanning some and sorting order - having trouble getting onto photobucket at mo... if I get on I'll post fresh scans from tonight...

You'll definitely have to ask an expert that question, Hornisse...

This one is to show you what you can do with an old scratched negative... just needs a little TLC...

this is the original scratched-up image that I first posted, not... just wished I had PS... just a tad too costly for my budget this milennia...

... and for those wanting a better shot of Gene's rig... the blurry bit at the bottom is the edge of the stage...
... there may be a better shot yet - still got another 30 ish to scan...

Nice cleanup, Ken. I'm diggin' the shot of Gene with the candelabra behind him. I have some great shots from '75, but I didn't take them, a friend of mine did - so I have refrained from posting. Shooting concerts has been a hobby of mine for ages, and was actually something I was considering doing for a living when I got out of college. I still make part of my living with my camera, but the subject matter is not nearly as fun. We should have a thread here for concert pix.
Re Photoshop - Try getting an older version on ebay, or even Photoshop Elements - most of what you need will be in there.

Ta Lowend (what is your name...?) the neg scanner is a plustek opticfilm 7200 (dedicated 35mm - cost £80) which came bundled with a prog called Silverfast (V2.0.7, which appears to be product locked) which has a lovely scratch removal auto-feature - a bit slow, but you pay for... I also have an old Epson Perfection 1200 with the neg scanner add on (which is getting old but works fine) - the primary pic software is 10 years old, called Micrografx Picture Publisher v8 - got very good reviews when it came out, but...

PC's a reasonably spec'd mid range Dell, post the (PSU?) death of the last hybrid just before Christmas...

The idea of trawling through ebay has validity but it is difficult to find at the right price and what looks legit...

Dave could put up the thread but it looks like we might end up hogging it...  ;D

I think I took these shots with an old Zenith E, then had a couple of Chinnon's, then a Pentax Super A until I went digital in 2003 (but in a budget way, just family stuff these days) with a Fuji 602 for our trip to your fair country... I considered that (pro) route, too, but could not afford to take the risk...

There's more nice ones to come...

My name is Billy. I scan my negs with an Epson Perfection 2400, usually set at 2400 or 4800 but that's not actual, as the higher resolutions are software interpolated (most consumer scanners are). You cant get spectacular scans unless you go professional and start getting your stuff drum scanned. Not worth the cost and trouble. especially if you're negs are grainy.
I shot the Kiss pics with an old Kowa 35mm on Kodacolor 400. I made a lateral move to a Pentax K1000 a couple years later, and ultimately to an Olympus E-10 digital SLR (got a great deal used). I would go after Photoshop Elelments if I were you - I have an older version (2) that came with my scanner, and it's a pretty nice package for the consumer. I would also be remiss if I didn't make a shameless plug for Apple - I know Dave loves them. ;D
As a graphic designer, I do some product and event photography as a tie-in to my other work, plus I do some sports stuff with the kids - and the odd trip to a club to catch a band.

Well Billy, you'll never believe me, but I just saw a horde of beggars riding by the house on some thoroughbreds... ;D

Yep... APPLE and PS would be my prefered tools... definitely (my buddy Graham is a dedicaded MAC user and keeps asking  me, "When are you going to get a real PC...?"
Never knew that about scanners...
I have used so many film types but mostly stuck with common brands, occasionally playing with stuff that went out to 1000 or 1600asa, then Fuji for a while, but stuck with Koda-gold until I went digi - that's a nice camera you've got, but as you said, tools of the trade...  8) - only name I can see on the Kiss stock is "Kodacolor II film"...

I have scanned in all my family pics I have traced from family members willing to help and passed them on to all I can find... suprising how many people are just not interested in pics... one is at least 1899, as I know when he died - I have 5 of nine grt grands - all pre WW2...
Done a lot of clearing up work, but some images need tools I don't have at this time, so I wait patiently - the family negs from '88 to '03 are another project, and last will be the music negs, but then there's the writing which I have stalled on...

Define "photographic tragedy"... there was a BIG old leather suitcase, chock full of family negs, that my dad threw out prior to the pair of them leaving London and moving back to Scotland in 1989 - never asked anyone - I was gutted...
After he passed in 2001 (mum passed in '92) my aunt gave me a private photo album that had belonged to my mum; never knew it even existed; he told her to give it to a lady that was her maid of honour at their wedding saying, "I don't want these; she'll know who they are..." there were shots of her parents and family I had never seen before - over 200 of them... my aunt just "didn't feel right" about giving them away...
He gave another photo album (his mum's...?) to a cousin in Oz without consulting us - she is (reputedly) so jealous of its contents she won't even let her brother have it to scan them for me...
My last living aunt had a box of pics she gave me as "don't know who they are" - 300+ - found her parent's wedding shot in it - 1922 - only one that exists...
I found that my sister had placed a vareity of pictures she had "acquired" in a family picture frame in his hall - among them was a wedding shot of my mum's parents - around 1919 - when I found it the sun had damaged it to such a degree that my gran's face had almost bleached to nothing - the only one that exists...

Always converted them back to B&W, not retaining the sepia tones when scanned - kinda sacrilege, but that is what they would have looked like, originally...

Just need to knuckle down and finish the book research...  ;)

another good rant...

no scanning tonight... oh well...

Ken, I totally get your frustration regarding the lack of interest in photos from so many family members. I've always been obsessed with family history, stories, photos and such. I'm glad you've been able to salvage what you have. BTW, I'm as obsessed with pictures of my own life time as I am with the older ones. I just wish I'd taken better care of them! Keep up the good work though, they look great!

George... I don't get the attitude of people on my "home" Island... the most notable geneaologist (Bill Lawson) is over the 50 books published and is a lowlands Scot, another archivist is English... The place is haemorrhaging the indigenous population and "white-settlers" are buying up the place for the laid-back lifestyle...

... and just as obsessed...  ;)
