Gibson Basses / Re: Bachbird makeover almost ready to come home
« on: September 20, 2012, 11:12:29 AM »
That looks AWESOME!!!!

Do you mind if I ask how much the refinish cost? Also, did you strip the body and prep it before sending it off or did the refinisher do that too?

Oh, one more question, did you give it a matching headstock?

MAP (minimum advertised price) is 1,199.00. I think you can do better at the HOG.

If you could walk out of HOG with one of these basses for $1000, I would say that's a really good price. Man, I want to order one but I need to hold myself back because financially, it would be a really bad idea. Owning a Pelham Blue NR Bird is a dream of mine but I have to say, I would definitely have to chrome it out. Like many of you, I'm also not super into some of the non-classic elements of it, smaller headstock, black hardware & 3-point bridge. BUT.... I think after making some mods to it I can put up with some of the other shortcomings. We all know that adding chrome covers over the pickups is not a problem and switching out the tuners and bridge with chrome ones also wouldn't be that hard or that expensive and I'm sure you can make some of your money back by selling the original parts on Ebay. Obviously, you can't do anything about the headstock but after all is said and done, I can probably be okay with a slightly smaller headstock and 3 point bridge.

Another thing, it's bad enough ordering a bass without playing but I definitely couldn't order it without even seeing a picture of it. I'm really surprised that there are no pictures floating around yet especially since it's supposedly coming out in less than a month.

Haven't seen anyone post this yet. If so, sorry and feel free to delete this one.

This thing looks pretty awesome IMO. He's unsure if it's a refinish or not but it looks pretty legit to me. I'm sure some of you guys are better at spotting the refins than I am. Regardless if it's the original finish or not, I think it looks perfect. Not too sure about the pickups though but I guess it's cool if it hasn't been rerouted.

Is the one from guitarpartsresource more accurate than the one on the Dutch site or is it the same one? Is it higher or does it also need the spacers to make it the right height?

Gibson Basses / Mike Watt/Pelham Blue NR Bird

This article popped up on RollingStone.com today. I know most of you have already seen Mike Watt's Pelham Blue NR Bird but I have never seen this photo before so I thought I would post it. I'm excited to see fIREHOSE again, they were a big influence for me when I started playing bass. I saw them a lot growing up.

I never knew that Greco made a version of an NR bird. It looks pretty spot on minus the bridge.

All of the photos on that site suck though. I'm sure whoever buys gear for them also would not buy an expensive guitar from someone that only had one terrible photo. Not sure what they are thinking. When I see an auction on Ebay that only has one photo that happens to be crappy, I pretty much chalk it up to them being rookies but based on this person's site they seem like they have been at it long enough to know better than that. Just my opinion though. Still a nice bass though.

Gibson Basses / Re: Thunderbuckers Vs. Lull T-Bird pickups?

Truthfully, Mike is not likely worried about competing for price, almost all of the pickup production goes to new instruments, not parts sales -  He has plenty of demand and offers the stock pick up on 3 different Thunderbirds plus a Fender body style as well.

Yes, I'm sure you're right, Mike Lull probably isn't concerned with it since his priority is to make and sell complete basses and not pickups.

if you could compare all of those pickups it would still be subjective. No doubt it would be useful in making your personal choices and some would fare better than others if you ran a poll. But there would never be a consensus on which was best.

Yes, I agree. I wasn't necessarily looking for which one people thought was the best but more just finding out what the differences were between them.

What we need to do is a comparison of all 3 plus an original 60's pickup. This would be thee ultimate test:
Mike Lull
Thunderbucker
Jason Lollar
Original Gibson Thunderbird 60's
Original Gibson T bird '76
Chandler T bird
Gibson Black t bird pickups (but weren't there like 4 different versions???)
Orville Thunderbirds (my favorites!!!)
Greco thunderbird pickup

This would be great but it would be tough to get all of these pickups in the same room. I would love to at least get the Lull, Thunderbucker and an original 60's one in a room together.

I think it's great we have choices now! Five years ago we would take just about anything, now there are several excellent choices.

I couldn't agree more. It's great that we have so many choices now. I only have the regular Seymour Duncan SSB-4 pickups that I had installed in some chrome Mike Lull covers and I already like those but I know those probably don't compare to any of these higher quality pickups. I have only heard an original 60's bird pickup and my Seymour Duncan's so far. I don't have any money right now but I think when I do pull the trigger I am going to get the Thunderbucker 66 pickups. The hotter pickups sound like a perfect option for me. I'm assuming that the Lull's and Thunderbuckers have to sound incredibly close to each other since they both seem to be EXACT replicas of an original. I'm sure the Lull's are great but that price just kills it for me. I'm sure he can defend the price and justify it and I know that he does have all that overhead but not making them himself has definitely driven up the price to a point where they are unattainable. At least for me. The Thunderbuckers are literally half the price and that is a huge difference. When Lull's were the only option I guess that was fine but now I would really make an attempt to find a way to bring the cost down so he can still compete. At least that's my opinion.

Gibson Basses / Re: NR Thunderbird reissuie a reality?

I have mixed feeling about this. On one hand, obviously, I would love for Gibson to make a proper reissue of an NR Bird, especially in a cool custom color but on the other hand I think that it's pretty cool that they haven't and we on here have NR Birds thanks to Bach & Rob's hard work. I really like that if you aren't "in the know" and a member of this board, you most likely don't know about the Bach version therefore making the fact that we have NR Birds a little more of a rarity and special. I know the Bachbird isn't completely faithful to the original but it is cheap enough so you can customize them so that they come pretty damn close. And let's face it, even if Gibson does a really good job on the reissue I highly doubt it will be faithful to the original either, something will be different about them, good or bad will remain to be seen. If I am going to spend money on a bass that is not close to original specs, that I have to customize and put money into, I would rather have the starting point of that bass cost me about $300 instead of thousands of dollars.

But again, part of me would also be excited if they do a really good job with it if it does happen.

Gibson Basses / Thunderbuckers Vs. Lull T-Bird pickups?
« on: December 19, 2011, 01:30:50 AM »
Okay, so enough of you have tried out the Thunderbucker pickups by now and now I'm wondering how they compare to the Lull pickups? I know that the Lull's have always gotten rave reviews and have been praised for being pretty much spot-on replicas of the originals and now the Thunderbuckers seem to be getting similar raves reviews. Since they were both reverse-engineered from the originals they should sound very similar, right? Has anyone compared the two? Is one actually closer to an original? I'm not trying to get anyone to bad mouth either since I know that a lot of hard work, time, money and loving care went into developing both. Not that I think anyone would bad mouth either but I'm just saying. I'm not necessarily looking to find out which is better since that is subjective, I'm looking to find out what the actual differences are. Is one hotter? Is one grittier? Etc.? Regardless, I think it's safe to say that they are both great sounding pickups. But Thunderbuckers also did a great job of making them much more affordable thankfully.

Oh, and sorry of this has already been covered. I have read comparisons of both of these pickups on here comparing them to originals, Duncuns and some others but I haven't noticed any comparisons of each other.

What did the description say about it in the auction? Did it mention what brand it was or any other interesting info about it so we can try to figure what they heck it is or when or where it was made?
