Thanks for the link, that is a great site and it's the same one I tried to order off the other night.  The covers would of cost about £1.80 each which is a great price, but the cost of postage is $25 therefore after currency conversion it'd cost me nearly £20 for a couple of bits of plastic - seems very unreasonable considering what they are.

Does anybody know where I can get empty soapbar covers (EMG35 sized, 89mmx35mm) preferably in the UK?  I could do with a couple, want to try mounting a single coil inside one, but the only ones I can find are for sale in the USA, and the postage cost is ridiculous :-\

Thanks for all the comments everyone!

I don't really have the facilities for painting (or the weather!) right now and on top of that I really just want to play it asap, university is drawing to a close now though and my workload is fairly high so I doubt I'd have the time to paint it properly.  I'm having it done with nitro so it should age nicely anyway :)

The Artec sounds like it might be just the ticket for now.  I think secretly I want to put something cheap in it at first just so I can have the satisfaction of swapping it out for something better later on ;D

I think it would be great with a proper Chrome TBird pup on it, is it still possible to get the covers?  I could have something made over here at some point... I know there are a couple of aftermarket ones like Lull but a bit out of my price range...

Thanks a lot! :)

Ooh really, can you comment on the tone of them?  I've picked up bits of info from reading around but it's good to hear what people think - also what would it cost inc. shipping to the UK?

Cheers :)

Hello everyone,

I've been snooping around here for a little bit looking at some of the projects, all of which look fantastic.  I thought I'd join up and share the one I'm having made at the moment, it's Thunderbird inspired to some degree!  It's a mix of the Telecaster and Jazzmaster, routed for a standard 4 string soapbar in the Jazz neck/Thunderbird position.

It's in the finishing process at the moment (going to be white) and this is the most recent picture I have of it at the moment from the luthier.  I've asked for some of the painting process but not had any reply yet.

I've been struggling to find a fairly decent pickup for it that's within my budget.   I sortof overshot it because I didn't originally intend to have it finished, I was going to paint it myself, but time limitations and lack of equipment made me decide to have it done properly.  If anyone has any suggestions on a pickup I could use please share - it's the size of a Seymour Duncan SSB-4 or an EMG 35.  I'm really not a fan of the modern ringy metallic tone of EMG though.  I emailed BaCH to see if they sold the chrome soapbars from their Thunderbird copies - Roman replied and said yes but that they were waiting for a restock so I doubt it's going to happen to be honest.  I think a chrome Thunderbird pup would look/sound great in it :D  But I'm not sure about dimensions and they're not very readily available...

Anyways if anybody has any ideas do share!

Cheers :)
