How well I can follow my own advice, I don't know.  But in my opinion the thing to do is try to play your best game with enthusiasm.  (I don't know Swedish, but actually I think the subtitle should say "death" not the "devil." )

Thank you.  That's one of my favorite movies.  I've seen it many times.  I look at that scene as one of the most uplifting parts of the movie.  Although it may seem dreary for him, the knight is doing as well  as a human could possibly do in playing chess with the Grim Reaper.  Pretty heroic, actually.
