Looks like someone was trying to turn this into an Epi Genesis or that Laboue (spelling?) bass That Gene Simmons used in KISS' early days.

A homemade predecessor to the (failed) Doublecut/Money basses. Initially, Phil Jones, the LP Bass designer, wanted Gibson to do double- rather than singlecuts.

Now, Uwe, that bass of yours is nothing but pure beauty! If I ever... hmmm.... get me another bass, it's very likely I'm gonna go looking for one like that.
-
Unfortunately, that one never made it past the prototype stage.
-
I like that custom job on the LP Special. ;D
-
That's a real pity! The bass looks just like the one I had in mind when I fixed up my Korean Lotus bass - a long scale Eb0, the first model. One difference is I've to a T-bird pup on mine.

Reserve is over $302, I can tell you that. ;)
In other news, did you guys see this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=300517975851&si=X5t69KQ8N8%252FrpcQwTrli2nUQtbY%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT Seems like a real nice price for a cool looking player.
Went for less than THIS! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=270696195090&si=X5t69KQ8N8%252FrpcQwTrli2nUQtbY%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

I recall seeing a band back in the late 1970's where a left handed guitar player did a similar thing..........to his 1950's Fender Telecaster! It made upper fret access easier for him as he was a lefty.....
