Probably a rejected bass that was used for finish experiments. It must be easier to paint S models without the binding.

Must be me... I quite like that fin...

Staring at that event horizon is a dirty job, but someone has to do it; something's going to come back out of it one day...

I have always been partial to blue Rics!

UK seller... not seen one of these before so I know absolutely nothing about them...

4004 Cheyenne - 1993 - natural oiled fin - maple neck with walnut wings - the classic shape, but very un-Rickie looking...?

I love these early Cheyennes. Very classy look IMHO that still has the essential Ric curves and "cresting waves".

But this one had a weird pickguard that left a shadow, like a carpet on a dark hardwood floor.

I had a 93 Cheyenne, bought it from fur85 (Mark F.) at the old Pit, sold it to bassduke49 (Paul B.) at the Rick Resource Forum. In both cases the price was between $900-1000 US, and this was 6-8 years ago. Even with the increase in Rick prices, £1799.00 BIN looks way high to me.

The 4004 series has the Rick vibe in some ways, not so in others.

And I don't get the pickguard shadow either. Why was there even a pickguard on it?

Highlander

looking at the close-up pics and the position of the pups, looks like it was removed and the rest of the body has been bleached...?

Possibly some filled screw-holes, too...

The pickups are at the correct locations. On the Cii RIC moved them about an inch backwards to enable slap/pop, and then when they realized that the truss rods can not be removed for service, returned the pickups back to the original layout, so that the rods can be pulled out and inserted back in through the neck pickup route.

The shadow was created as dark wood tends to brighten in direct sunlight. The area that wasn't exposed remained dark.

Especially with the type of finish RIC used on those.

Pretty much just like my favorite, but mine's an '89. Phenomenal necks on these late 80s/early 90s Rics!

4003s/8 on the 'bay:

I'd love to get one of these someday.  My old Ibanez Studio is great, but I kinda dig the Ric sound in an 8 string config.
