Title: Chris Squire's Thunderbird
Post by: Pekka on August 05, 2010, 10:21:35 AM
What colour it is? Pelham Blue or something else? Some say it's green but which one?

Pelham Blue.
Interesting pic, from the Buggles/Drama period.

Pelham Blue.
Interesting pic, from the Buggles/Drama period.

I saw it once referred as Bus/Yeggles period.:)

He used the bass on "Does It Really Happen?" on "Drama". Great sound.

I think that was for sale a few years back. Pelham Blue. I know a guy who tried to buy it but got outbid. GREAT tone!!! Almost sounds like his Rickenbacker or a dirty Precision.

Squire would sound like Squire even if all he did was play with himself.

I remember buying that record when it came out.  I had to learn that song!  I've seen some early footage where he is playing a Telecaster bass (single coil) and it still sounds like him.

Last I heard it belongs to a guy named Vincent Gallo. He's got quite a collection. Apparently he's pretty chummy with Squire and owns some other items from his past. Possibly the 8 string??? http://www.vincentgallo.com/

Oh wow- I saw that.  Good flick!  (loves my IFC and Sundance channels)

I remember some bar scene that was underscored by the intro to "Heart of the Sunrise".  It all makes sense now   8)

Any comment on that stereo speculation? His Rick was of course modded as a stereo so why would he use the same Y-cord with the T-Bird if it wasn't? Has anybody tried it with a T-Bird, each pickup to it's own channel?

I thought all 4001s were equipped for Ric-O-Sound but I could very easily be wrong. In any case, I'm curious about the T-bird's electronics as well.

I know little about Squire's setup, but I thought I remember reading that he used the stereo feature to run the Ric into both bass and guitar (Marshall stack, IIRC) rigs(?)  Maybe he had his other basses similarly equipped.

I've only just recently played with the stereo features on the 4001 and my former Ovation Magnum-I (it was mainly to test the Mag prior to sale).  I had built some channel insert cables for my mixer, and the wiring is the same as a stereo bass cable - essentially, one stereo(1/4" TRS) connector wired with the "tip" going to one mono(1/4" TS) cable, and the "ring" going to a second mono(1/4" TS) cable.  Each pickup gets sent to its own separate mono cable.

It adds a nice spatial effect to normal playing when the pickups are sent to different positions in the stereo field (sounds awesome thru my F2-B), but I found it most useful for effect processing - sending the neck pickup direct to preserve the fundamental, and running the bridge thru effects, synth, etc...  I've actually been thinking about stereo-izing my Ibanez 8-string for this purpose.  Not something I'd personally use live, but could be lots of fun for recording.

The deluxe models were, can't remember the year when the Ric-O-Sound jack was added as a standard to them but the 'S' models were mono ans Squire's bass was and is a 4001S (or RM 1999 like it was called in England).

I have my both 12-string basses stereo-zized.:) Both pickups go through the stereo volume pedal and a stereo delay, the neckpick goes to the normal channel of DR-103 and the bridge pickup through some more effects (mainly distortion) to the bright channel of the same amp. Works splendidly even with that one amp and will work even better when I get another amp and a cab.:) Or maybe a small Leslie for the bridge pickup channel.

He is a pretty big dude.  and now he is more squarish shaped.  He has not aged very well....

This has been a great thread! Some great pictures, great info on which tracks Squire used the Thunderbird on. I love the Drama album!

Thought I'd post a recent pic of my '68 Pelham Blue Melody Maker:

The color looks different depending on the lighting, here's the one I originally thought was best:

But I think the first one is a better representation.

That one pic looks familiar there was a guy who shot a few photos during the Drama tour & posted them at the Soundchaser YES forum I asked if I could post them at the old Dude Pit & he said sure they were the first I’ve seen of the NR Tbird in action however I did see an AD for an Auction house in a old Guitar player or Musicians mag that had a shot of CS’s NR Tbird body & it listed the serial # the mag is long gone but it was from the 70’s or early 80’s BTW he may have had more then one NR Tbird because I think (& I could be wrong) the one pictured in the mag was SB ,
Cheers

I remember that ad in Guitar Player.  It was sunburst and I think he was asking $2500 (which was a lot of $$ back then!)

I remember asking there about Squire's Thunderbird as I had never seen it (believing it was a '76 or at least a reverse) and then you posted those pics. Thanks again!

I saw Yes only once, in 1983 on the 90125 tour. Great show. Was Squire back to playing his Ric on that tour? I did briefly meet Alan White after the show and he signed my tour book.  :)

He used plenty of basses, depending on the song just like in the 70's. He had the green Mouradian ("Owner Of The Lonely Heart"), the Elektra ("Leave It", "Cinema", "City Of Love"), the 8-string Ranney ("Changes", "Hearts"), Thunderbird (for "Gimme Some Lovin'" and probably for "Our Song") and the Ric ("Hold On", "It Can Happen" plus all the classic old stuff).

Steve Howe could introduce Tales from the Crypt these days. Or lecture math. There really is no difference.
