HOW CAN YOU STAND THAT SNAREDRUM???  :P

It was the sound of the snare which immediately drew me to the song.  I seem to like it as much as other people seem to hate it.

I was 21 when the Kill 'Em All came out and I loved it!  One of my favorite tracks is The Four Horsemen.  Especially the tempo change at 2:39.

My favorite snare drum sound of all time has to be Neighbours from Tattoo You.

I love METALLICA! It's significant that they've been called the New Zeppelin.
They're the BIGGEST BANDS EVER but they sure ain't gettin' much love here at the Outpost.

I used to be one of the biggest Metallica fans you'd ever find... then came 1991 and they traded  all of their credibility so that Lars could go on a three-year-drunk with Slash and MTV. f*** 'em.

Don't get me wrong, their three first albums are king for me, even "justice" with that stupidly bassless production has alot of good stuff.
After that, they gone mainstream (that "garage days" thingy doesn't really count). Dammit, metal isn't about mainstream! I hate hearing "nothing else matters" in tv commercials etc. That's not metal, maybe it's heavish pop or whatever, but not metal.

Poor James, he should have found a better drummer...
Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it.

I might not love Led Zep, but they sure don't deserve a comparison with a band as limited in its musical expression as Metallica. Learning to write a rock song in a major key would be a real first for Metallica. In comparison, Led Zep are the Beatles.

Oh, I forgot, Nickelbag are already the new Beatles ...

It may be my age, but as art, it really really doesn't work for me.

What does "Biggest Bands Ever" mean?  If it's quantifiable, I'd love to understand what you're referring to.

not in the same breath....

maybe i am too old but other than watching Mariano run onto the field with sandman blasting Metalica has never done it for me.  Contrary to most of you  - Led Zeppelin does - even with the commercialism and Page ripping off everyone elses licks......  After really hearing a LZ album ( 2 i believe) I could never listen to my prior passion Black Sabbath as anything other than a garage band  - still to this day -  40 years later.  JPJ and Bonzo where great together. IMHO

Bonzo never talked as much bullshit as Lars for one thing.

But it's really a moot subject, Zep's status was a making of its time, Metallica status is of another era.

But in the narrowness of their musical output, I find Metallica closer to Black Sabbath than to Led Zep. For me, Led Zep transcend categories such as heavy metal and even hard rock.

Metallica is a heavy metal band, even with eye liner and short hair, an influential one in the genre and even one that broke into the market outside of heavy metal, but they are still a heavy metal band. Nothing wrong with that, but it's nothing that can be equated with Zep's eclectic legacy.

See, Rob, I can even write nice things about that band with the aloof hippie singer, the sloppy lead guitarist, the dragging behind drummer and that bass player that was so often buried in the mix. (Quote of Gene Simmons: "With Led Zeppelin, you could never hear the bass proberly." My feelings exactly, I found JPJ's playing largely unobstrusive or maybe the myriad Jimmy Page guitar tracks and Bozo's drum sound left him no room to breathe.)

quoting Gene Simmons? yikes.

If you want to hear how good JPJ is, listen to Them Crooked Vultures...he's a beast.
He was thoroughly lost in most of Zep's stuff...too bad.

It's a strange band - I don't really care for overly crunchy rhythm guitar and I hate his vocals.
The rest of em are OK, and they do have a huge fan base.
Unfortunately, there's a large (and vocal) portion of their fans that are into the look and badassedness of the band.
Any band that needs to explain to their fans why they cut their hair has got an uphill battle to fight.

Also, the more I learned about the chemistry of these guys (via documentaries and such), the more I stayed away from them.
I will give James Hetfield some credit for not pounding Lars to death by now.

You have clearly summed up much of what I feel.  This is especially true of the part about Hetfield's singing and the documentaries about them.  Whatever that documentary was that showed their meltdown, that was really unpleasant.  It made me even less interested in Metallica.  This doesn't mean I'd change the channel if a Metallica video came on.  That would be unlikely to happen anyway since 90% of the music channels on my cable are crap, mostly consisting of rap and some country.
