Sad news, indeed.  My wife just saw a special on these dolphins, but I don't think she knew that they've been declared extinct.

So much in contrast to Asia and South America, everything in Black Africa, with very few exceptions, seems to be getting worse and worse. (The by far most positive news in recent decades was the overthrow of Apartheid without bloodshed.) But Central Africa especially is the pits. I'm not bemoaning lack of democracy there. For a change I could live with a "benevolent dictator" that at least tries to achieve something for his country and people (= not just his family and tribe!). All I see is corrupt warlords and downwards spiraling GNPs since colonial days. (No, I'm not advocating the return of the "white man", I'm advocating that black elites finally get off their butt and do something.)

As long as that doesn't change, the gorillas won't have rest.
