There's no problem with that bass. All it needs is a refinish - which it would get immediately if I owned it.

That is a perfectly justifiable point of view held by many people. I simply happen to disagree. I would do a pretty bass refin in a heartbeat. Maybe if I had spent 10 years getting it into that shape, I'd feel differently - but I doubt it.

I've seen pictures of Sami with a newer looking Jazz of the same color. The pics are from when he first joined the Dolls, so I'd imagine it's the same bass with a couple of albums and tours behind it. Back in his Hanoi days, Sam was a Gibson diehard (at least three 70's birds, a Triumph, a V, and some sort of EB). The Triumph, V, and EB were from mimed TV appearances so who knows if he really used them, but the Thunderbirds were a constant presence throughout their run. I think he was still playing birds when I saw him with Jetboy, as well. He also played an Aria ZZ bass (32" scale if I remember correctly) that made it onto their Marquee video and album (All Those Wasted Years). I had one of those for about 5 minutes in 1986. Played and sounded pretty good. Just not my cuppa.
Sam also plays guitar in Mad Juana. I really like them, too.

What a great recommendation, Herr Carlston, got the Mad Juana CD and it is great, forecefully life-affirming music. Really fun and uplifting to hear. Power gypsy Spanish folk with a bit of Ska weirdness thrown in. Wow.

I'm glad you like it, Uwe. I was happily surprised to find that Sami seems to be just as adventurous and interesting in his own music as his former bandmates are/were.

I can't seem to find it anywhere, but I have a Bass Player mag that has a short interview with Yaffa when the new Dolls album ( a couple years ago now I think) was coming out. He claimed to be using a 60's Jazz bass body with a newer neck. The picture of him in BP showed a lot of finish wear from what I recall. I can find no proof of the article ever existing tho at the moment.

Wandered in here out of curiosity. I love that Carmen song. I have the vinyl of Fandangos in Space. I believe that's John Glascock on bass, prior to working with Jethro Tull. Carmen opened a tour for them at one point.

I'm hearing rumors that Sam may be joining forces with Michael Monroe now that Hanoi Rocks has once again called it a day. Michael has no problems entering the U.S. for tours, so this could end up being a good thing for any old Hanoi fans.
