Can't you copy the transfer and use a computer to make a new iron on, saving the original?

There are transfer papers that work with an inkjet printer - but they work badly since you are transfering dried liquid.

The new color devices at print for pay shops do a pretty good job on transfers ( toner=plastic=good) - how good depends on the design complexity, the device and the media.  Remember that the transfer paper is 8.5x11 so whatever design you come up with make sure that it can be equally divided into the standard sheet size - ie two or four to sheet - so as to maximize the total sheet and reduce costs.  A PDF format might work well.  That is if anyone was interested in a run. ;)
