my visit at GC
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:28:03 PM »
I had some time to kill so I decided to stop at Guitar Center.  sometimes they'll have an SG bass and/or a Tbird, but tonight was different.  2 SGs, 2 Flyin Vs (one satin finish, one gloss), an Explorer and the RD reissue. couldn't find a cable to plug in with, so I noodled a bit and then took crappy phone pics.  I haven't seen that many Gibson basses in stock around here since the 70s at Chuck Levin's.  the SGs look tiny!

De-heavy-metallizes it quite a bit. A congregation of no less than six Gibson basses in a shop - what is the world coming to I cry?!!!

I remember when the SG came out, and I was in a local GC asking the manager when/if they were going to get any in.  Got the "ugh.. yeah, that'll probably be only in a special order type arrangement" response.  Now look at ya, GC!  Go on wit ya bad self.  :vader:

What I don't get is.................

- The V with all chrome parts including the PICKUPS! - Great, same finish throughout -fantastic!
- Explorer, chrome bridge and tuners, nice, then it gets black pups. Why? BTW, that bass would likely look very good with all black hardware. I don't get it.
- The SG is consistant and the RD works as well.
- A reissue Non Reverse Thunderbird with black parts instead of available chrome, or at least offer a choice.  ???

I wonder if Gibson is pressuring its larger dealers (or maybe just GC) to actually carry some basses in stock besides the occasional Thunderbird.

that's what I was wondering, too.  with the loss of capital in the seized wood episode, maybe they need to boost sales any way they can including selling basses (of all things).

Great minds - even of the opposite sex - think alike, Mark. That was exactly my thought when I saw the Explorer: "Now why didn't they use black hardware on that bass?!" On the Flying V, the chrome is too much (thr original had black pups, remember), it buries the shape of the bass. On the RD the chrome looks great.
