Here they go again ...
« on: April 15, 2016, 04:02:23 AM »
Never been a huge GnR enthusiast (to the eternal chagrin of my son who thinks that Axl's, Izzy's, Duff's and, of course, Slash's respective buttholes are good for four independently operating solar systems  :) ) ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlbWVdqpmoc&feature=youtu.be

... but that doesn't sound horrible (never know how much it has been doctored). Yes, Axl's skinny as a rake/serpentine mover days are over, but he actually seems to have more depth and authority in his lower register today than as a young man.

I was never a fan.  But that was better than I might have expected.  I never understood the sex appeal of Axl Rose, though.  I mean not at all.  But my sister's stepdaughter used to obsess over him.  Also, it seems I remember something about him and Lana Del Rey.  My brother-in-law used to do a great impression of Axl Rose which really irritated his daughter.  But the rest of us found it hilarious.

Never was a fan either. I couldn't stand Axl's voice or persona from the get go. I have to admit, in hindsight, Appetite is a great rock and roll record. But still, that voice... I saw a concert of Axl's recent version of GnR on VH1 Classic, and they were really quite good. Still not interested in this semi-reunion though. Total cash grab.

It's not a nice thing to say, but to me Axl looks pure white trash, weaselly and all, whether thin or pudgy, young or old. Give him a skinhead crew cut and he'd look 100% like some White Power moron. I know he's probably a deeper and better person than that but his looks are unfortunate.

Duff is a handsome man (bit of David Bowie and/or non-sinister Kevin Bacon in him) and Slash is just that cute comic book figure. I always thought that Axl can't be such a bad singer after all because he made a career in spite of his looks.

And in spite of his voice. Like singing with a perpetual whine.

At least he doesn't make my ears bleed like so many current pop singers.

His voice reminds me of Janis Joplin's without the warmth. And Janis without warmth is pretty much fingernails scraping on a blackboard.

In general, I don't much go for gravelly voices like that.  There can be exceptions, of course, like Gregg Allman.  Something like "Statesboro Blues" is great as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed. And a very fun tune to play!

I always thought Axl was a more whiney version of James D Mangrum... not a big fan...

I'm sure it is.  But the only place I've played it is in my den.

Sure Axl looks like white tash which is a perfect fit for the trashy genre of 8o's hair metal from which his band sprung. So the guys from Scorpion don't look trashy? The voice isn't any worse than what similar bands were doing like say Cinderella or Quiet Riot who emulated another band everybody loves here. They should bring this tune back to the set list since it's as relevant as ever.
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

Maybe Trump can use it as his campaign song?
