Title: Welcome to the new G&L forum!
Post by: rockinrayduke on May 08, 2008, 07:47:18 AM
I just got my first ever L2000 and I'm loving it. So I asked Dave & Uwe for a place to discuss. So let's see some pics and, you know, discuss. ;D

They bolt the necks on their basses, don't they?

Hey this is one of Leo's creations, his become popular and become the industry standard, not like other basses made of stick & string.

He got it right three times!

Admittedly so. No doubt about the quality of G & L. I just always wondered why Leo's touch for practical, yet visually striking design didn't really show on his "Fender Mk III" brand. While a P Bass is an ugly beast in my eyes, I can appreciate its brutish utility look. The J Bass lines are feminine and elegant. The Stingray made an immediate visual statement in the midseventies with that 3 + 1 headstock, the oval pickguard and the idiosyncratic pup. The G & L stuff seems to be a lot more careful, even "un-rock" (I miss the pickguards I guess). Was he under pressure not to emulate Fender or MusicMan too much? G & L have pretty instruments no doubt (I like the ASAT), but no other icon. But then three bass design icons (P, J & Stingray) is probably enough from one man.

But enough from me ... I'll retreat to my Gibson cave. Have fun G & Lsters!

Uwe

The L2000 to me at least, looks like a combo of MM and Fender, but more Fender than MM.

And I DO love that ASAT....I want one badly.

The ASAT is the one G&L I have seriously considered.

I have never heard anything but great things about other G&L's- the ASAT you hear about it being a neck diver, but that is common acceptance being a Gibsonite

ASHAT -- is that an ASAT played by an asshat?  ???   ;)

I've long been tempted because I love the Tele shape but I'd have to get one of those extender things that you can install on the upper strap button location.

No, it's a AHOLE?
 ;D

No one does that with Gibsons. I imagine a wide strap would do the trick?

Dave I saw an ASAT on the G&L site that had 2 strap buttons on the butt end. That should help, right?

Originally they only had a single lower strap button. Now they have two, and using the one toward the bass side will help balance.

What I'm talking about was a little extender arm. I said above that it attached to the upper strap point, but after thinking about it, it may have attached to the neck plate. It extended out a few inches and you attached your strap to the far end. I remember that somebody at the Pit had one, whoever it was may have actually been making and selling them. This was a good 5 years ago.

Since we're starting a new G&L forum, I guess I'll post pics of mine.

The "rat bastard" '81 L-1000 was my mainstay for a few years when I could no longer play the Embassy without feeling like I got run over by a train next day.  For my money, it's a better bass than my '64 Precision was.  Here's my son with it.  I paid $250 for it about 8 years ago

I also picked up an L-2000 Tribute last year.  Haven't really spent a lot of time on it yet.  I let my son have it when he moved into his own apartment.  I felt better bringing the L-1000 back where I could keep an eye on it.  My son likes it, but prefers the old pink bastard.  This one cost me $260 last year, with the gig bag and cord.

Congrats on the new G&Ls Ray, it's nice to see more people playing them.  I'm down to just two L-2000s now but I've had so many over the years.  Here are just a few of them.
