Title: New BaCH bass
Post by: Basvarken on July 19, 2011, 03:58:09 PM
(http://www.bachmusik.com/ew-data/news/tcbass_1.jpg)

A Telecaster Bass. Short scale!
I have no idea what the big black pickup is exactly.

I sent BaCH a few pictures of Telecaster Basses a few months ago.
And now all of a sudden they announce this new bass

Should be interesting!

That big pickup (assuming it's a humbucker) might have gone better in the gap between the neck and the single coil :-)

Make it longscale and semi-hollow.

Isn't that TV yellow?  :P

You get a nice maple top and binding, and another pickup, for only an extra 20 Euros. I'm wondering if the Model 1 I've got in the man drawer would fit instead of the humbucker. Would that be a good thing?

Can we get these through you Rob?

Okay, so I ordered one of these new Telecaster Basses. To check it out.

It arrived friday moring.

First impression, straight out of the box was good!
Looks classy with the bookmatched spalted maple top and creme bindings round the top and backside.

The humbucker at the bridge is a model I haven't seen before. Nothing like any of the humbuckers BaCH uses on their bass guitars.
It is kinda wide and it is radiused, so it follows the radius of the fingerboard.
I'll have to ask BaCH what it is exactly.

The sound of the front single coil pickup is very P bass like. No surprise, 'cause that's what it is basicly (albeit a short scale one). An amplified log is what I usually call this sound. Just like the BaCH fifties P copy that I used to have.
Very "open" sounding with lots of "ring".

The humbucker sounds a little meaner. Oddly enough a bit J- bass like.
I wouldn't be able to hear it is not a single coil if I hadn't seen this big black pickup.
I lowered to pickup somewhat, because it was too close to the strings for my liking. In order to do that I had to take it out and remove some of the foam underneath it.

Plus I lowered the front pickup too. That was a piece of cake with the height adjustment screws.
Now they're nice and balanced and more comfortable on the fingers.

Friday night I took it a gig I had ( first gig with new band Definition of Madmen  :toast:)
Just like I had expected, the sound on a full tube amp is brutal!
This bass guitar has lots of dynamics. If you play it gently you get a nice round and full woody tone. If you play it hard you get a mean growl with lots of bite and a sweet drive.

The strings were very fresh (and not exactly my taste), so I had a wee bit too much top highs in my sound. So I dialed back the Tone knob on the bass a bit and lowered the Treble on the amp a little. No big deal.

Being a short scale fan, this bass really feels comfortabel straight away. Even with the rather chunky neck.
I seems to me the neck isn't finished at all. If it is then it must have  been a very subtle thin layer of oil or satin finish.

This Telecaster bass is a remarkable instrument that seems to appeal to geetards a lot. Most of the comments came from guitarists (who wanted to order a Telecaster guitar with spalted maple top and creme bindings)

I took some snap shots in the garden:

Very, very cool! The pickup looks like the ones Alembic and Warwick use. Warwick calls it classic humbucker.

@ Dave

Yeah their site is all messed up.

The BTC Bass with one single coil is 203,- Euro (VAT included). Available in Creme or Butterscotch.
For you guys in the US of A that is is 245 dollars (VAT not included)

The BTC Bass with single coil and humbucker at the bridge is 249,- Euro (vat included).
Four you guys in the US of A that is is 300 dollars (VAT not included)

The creme and the butterscotch have a 50's P style bridge with two saddles.

The spalted one has a heavier bridge with four separate saddles.
And the postion markers one the latter are abalone pearl dots.

@ Chris
Looks very similar indeed.

And five each of the other ones without binding and without spalted maple top and with just the single coil.

Really love the look of the 50's precision, but with block inlay's on the neck. Have contacted them about the width of the neck at the nut, still waiting to hear back. I was wondering about they're quality control, as ive heard mixed feedback about this ?

BaCH added a new Telecaster Bass to their  assortment; it has a black body without bindings. A rosewood fretboard. And a mini-humbucker at the bridge (as a second pickup, next to the single coil). The bridge is the simple two saddle version.

And... there is some serious progress on the EB-2!
After the echec with the manufacturer of the bridge we developed ourselves, BaCH chose to use the traditional three point bridge  (if it's good enough for the Rivoli reissue, why not use it for the BaCH semi-acoustic bass).
And there is really going to be a short scale as well as a long scale version. Available in three colors: Antique Red, Natural and White.
Hope they get them ready before Xmas!

I didn't know you quit playing Gary? How's that?

I'll still play for fun here and there, and I'm doing another album with Kelp in the spring, but no more bands.  My life went through a pretty big change last year.  Not only did I get divorced (which I should have done years ago), but I quit a 25 year drug and drinking habit (caused a lot by a miserable marriage to an abuse, histrionic wife).  I've also noticed that my hands seem to be getting arthritic and it's starting to hurt when I play.  And, if that's not enough, my band chose to betray me and took HER side of things without ever finding out why I left her.  Add to that the fact that I was playing in some bad places, with no following, and Ohio allowing concealed carry in bars, and you can see what the logical choice was.

I've been playing for over 40 years, and have loved every minute of it.  I've just reached a point where I need to have other priorities.  I have found a new lease on life, and am focusing on what means most to me now, my family and dear friends.

Don't worry, though. I'll pop in and wave the Epi freak flag from time to time.

Gary, I too get a bit of arthritis in my hands and the top joint on my little finger (left hand) now doesn't straighten properly. I've modified my playing to suit (a bit) but what I find strange in the best possible way is that the more I play the less painful my hands are over a given period of time. I know everyone is different but ... just sayin'.
I would guess that the changes in your life are probably a bigger issue to you atm. I can understand your new focus. Best of luck with it mate.

I've had one musician friend killed at a bar in town here...stabbed, actually...guns just make it easier and less personal.  Not trying to start anything political...I'm the most apolitical person any of you will ever know (Patman is painfully shy and quiet), but alcohol and weapons are a bad mix.  It has been a constant fear of mine ever since Frank was stabbed.  Frank was probably the greatest trumpet player (literally) to ever walk the face of this earth FWIW. His death was so senseless.

No we don't play Over-the-Rhine...but we do play quite often in a 300 seat roadhouse on river road in the extreme west of town in a sketchy neighborhood. I generally try to steer us to places that serve meals as well as booze...makes me feel safer.

The 300 seat roadhouse BTW is a wonderful place to play. Jim and Jack's...best food and rock n' roll in town.  I grew up on the west side and still miss it and the people there.

You can run, but you can't hide from your upbringing.

Ive been gigging 40 years,also...and I think that if I stop playing, pretty soon I will no longer be able to...I don't want that to happen. They can pry my Precision Bass out of my cold dead hands.(yes, i have had a few beers tonight)...

Me too!  I'm just a month shy of 50 myself.  Exercise and movement are important to keep yoursell from getting cripled up - IMO.  I've been a technician for a little over 30 years and some days I really feel it.

I had an Orthopedic tell me, right after he pumped my right shoulder full of freezing cold cortisone >:(, that virtually everyone started to develop arthritis at about the age of 18.  Most people didn't feel it for many years and some not at all but that it was just a natural part of aging.

Congrats Gary on pulling out of your tailspin - I know that it was not an easy thing to do.  Best of luck!

You guys probably remember the Telecaster bass with Spalted Maple top?
I've been gigging with this bass a lot lately. And I keep getting very good reactins from the people in the audience. About the looks but also about the sound.

I've asked BaCH to make a series of these basses.
And now they've announced they will be available soon (next week)
The only difference is they won't feature the Spalted Maple top. The rest is identical to my bass (body is US Alder)

I was asking b/c there was no mention of a Rick in this thread, didn't look at their website.

If I were in the market, I'd prefer the solid alder to the spalted top, though I can imagine the latter will sell better.
