The Outpost Cafe / Re: What I saw in my backyard today
« on: January 24, 2008, 10:00:18 AM »
Thanks guys. That's two votes for a Coopers Hawk and the description I read sounds correct. It was pretty small. Maybe a foot tall. I love that I can go to a bass board and find out just about anything!

We've had more snow this winter than I've ever seen here in Utah. It's been cold enough that it stays from one storm to the next. My backyard has been under over two feet of it since early December. I did see my grass in the front yard (South facing) a couple times though. We're in the foothills near American Fork Canyon and are a mile above sea level. The other day I saw 5 or 6 FAT deer prancing across the road up the street from my house. They're obviously eating well this winter, snow or not... I actually love living in this area, I just can't make a living here like I can in Los Angeles.

It's funny, the camera I took these pics with is a three year old Fuji FinePix S5100, which is a low/mid level digital at only 4MP. It has some great features though and has been a nice camera for me. Once I'm working again and have a few bucks saved, I want to upgrade to a Nikon D80. Then I'll turn over the Fuji to my son, who is already obsessed with taking pictures with it. Its auto mode is so good he actually gets great shots if they're framed well (which at just under three years old, is more random than planned)!

Sorry to hear that, George.

But I had to smile at the idea of buying it for your sons. You couldn't just put it away. You'd have to break it in for them.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right! I'll probably try and pick one up once I'm working again.

I really think it could be a great project. If the NR sounds as good as it looks I think this would be a no brainer. I forget how many we need to be ready to buy... 20 maybe? A nice Embassy would a great bass to have for well under a grand.

Yeah, I work in post production. Me and thousands of guys and gals just like me are currently out of work as well, except our time off hasn't been voluntary.  ::)

I happened to look out my back window today and saw this little dude sitting on top of my kid's swing set, eating what probably used to be a mouse. I'm not much of an ornithologist and his/her tail's not red, so can anyone tell me what kind of hawk this is? I assume it's a hawk... Anyway, my almost three year old was totally fascinated and immediately told me his name was Hawkie and he'd gotten lost. While looking for his friends, he got hungry so he ate that mouse. (Sucks to be the mouse, I guess!)

Damn those writers! If I were working right now I'd buy one of those and put it away for my sons. A nice short scale would be good to start with!

:D  You think you can tell a cat to do something?   :D  Good luck!

 ;)

Luckily, I've found that most of the cats I've owned over the years preferred to go outside to do their business. When I got married and moved to NYC, my wife had a cat that was indoor only (pretty much a necessity in that area if you want your cat to actually live). When we moved back to Burbank, we lived in the hills so we kept the cats inside to keep the coyotes at bay. Once we came to Utah, we relented and the one cat we still have has lived happily outside from early spring to early winter for two years. It's amazing though... During the warm months he never comes inside for more than a minute or two, but once he comes in for the winter he turns back into a total homebody, sleeping on ours or our son's bed and flopping down for belly rubs any time I sit down for more than 30 seconds. I gotta say, I love our cat!

I had a Ragdoll cat a few years ago that weighed 28 pounds. Nicest cat in the world but changing his litter was a total PITA. He regularly left deposits that rivaled any adult human. Next time we have a Ragdoll I'm thinking we'll have a kitty door and I'll just tell him to poop outside!

Thanks for the link Tony. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise. Great read.

One of the few left...

Not a Gibson or Epi, but it's got shiny bits!

Ebony and ivory, er, chrome can live together.

A nod to my past...

My favorite EB. Needs a better picture. I feel a session coming on.  :D

Gibson Basses / Re: Hello, I am A Gibson Bass addict......
« on: January 20, 2008, 12:28:36 PM »
I became a Gibson bass addict in 1979 at Killeen music in Burbank, CA. They had a white Thunderbird that had been sitting on the wall for a couple years. The first time I saw it I fell in love and that was that. Unfortunately, it sold before I could talk my parents into letting me buy it. My luck; it sits for two years or more and sells as soon as I see it!

Flash forward a few months to my very first club visit at the Ice House in Pasadena (known as a comedy club, but they had bands in the back room; I saw Armored Saint there a year or two later). Anyway, the bassist had a red 70's bird. That was strike two... Strike three happened in October, 1981 when I saw Motley Crue for the first time. Nikki's white bird sealed the deal for me and I had my first bird (a black one) a few months later At $500, it was $50 overpriced for the time, but I didn't care. I wanted that bass!. I've owned other brands over the years and still still do really like and own the two Fender icons, but my first love and emotional favorites will always be Gibsons. That started with Thunderbirds and EBLs, but over the years I've grown to love most of the basses they've sold over the years. As addictions go, I could've done a lot worse!
