Bass Amps & Effects / new cab day - Fender Bassman Neo 610
« on: May 22, 2012, 04:47:46 PM »
I had my first rehearsal with my brand new Bassman Neo 610 last night - I'm very impressed. My Epifani UL610 is a great sounding cab, with a huge bottom end - but as you probably know the Epi UL cabs are voiced with a scoop, so getting mids out of them require some EQ tweaking. The Neo 610 on the other hand, sounds smooth right across the frequency range, and the mids are very tight and focused. I used SWR cabs for many years, and I'd describe the Neo 610 as being similar to the tone of a SWR Goliath 410 - without the sizzle. That said, the definition is great, and the bottom end is full without being muddy.

For my old school rock and blues gigs this cab seems like a perfect match. I'm very happy with the purchase, and the people who designed the ergonomics of the Neo 610 knew exactly what they were doing - the handling options are perfect for a gigging musician - everything from the location of the handles, the skid rails and the kick panel are extremely practical, as is the heavy duty surface of the cabinet and the metal corners. The overall package seems very durable and roadworthy indeed. And it's super light ... and looks fantastic. Winner!

First gig with the new cab is on Saturday night. Will take some photos then :-)

The Bass Zone / Gig video from Saturday night - Duesenberg action

Various songs from Saturday night's gig.  We had 370 people pay $20 each, so the venue was very happy (given we were on a fixed fee rather than a door deal)

The Bass Zone / The bizarre life of being in a tribute band: Episode #26
« on: January 19, 2012, 05:01:42 PM »
My Stones tribute band will be performing two songs live on a nationally televised daytime TV current affairs/variety show in July as part of a feature on Mick Jagger's birthday.  I hope the TV show's makeup person is outstanding at their job - this old fat guy will need it!   :o

Gibson Basses / The Ox's basses in the Tommy movie
« on: January 08, 2012, 04:09:30 PM »
The wife and I are going to see Roger Daltrey perform the Tommy album in full in a couple of months (no other Who members in the band, but pete's son is playing guitar),so we watched Tommy last night on DVD for the first time in a few years.  Because I've seen the movie so many times over the years (including at the cinema as a 15yo when it was first released), this time I focussed on the music rather than the visuals (apart from Ann-Margret's rack of course) and took notice of the basses John was playing - a triple pickup Flying V, a Thunderbird neck and pups on a sickle shaped body, and an EB-1 played upright on it's stand.

The Outpost Cafe / For the tank guys

I'm reading the English translation of "Tigers In The Mud" by Otto Carius, a highly decorated WWII German tank commander.  Fascinating, and it has confirmed for me that I don't want to be in a tank crew in the afterlife  :o
