Ben Hall posts a pic of a Monty 4005 and says they will be cheaper than the XC.

Surprising. Way beyond my price range, whatever the cost turns out to be.

I just saw that this morning.

Ben's been one for change. I expect everybody to complain about it.

Great looking bass. I'd like to try one out. I haven't bought anything new from Rickenbacker in 30 years. That's unlikely to change.

The one I tried (1967) left me underwhelmed. I understand that Ric aficionados want their 4005 to be historically accurate but the bridge pickup on it is really useless.

The one in the pic is a beauty with Monty over flamed maple, it's nice to see them experimenting outside the FG/MG/JG box.

Cue all those folk demanding a reissue on Talkbass to promptly not buy one...

I came here to post this. I think it's a cool thing, no matter how limited the numbers end up being.

Alanko

At least one will get haphazardly drilled into a five string conversion...

One if my favorite Ric body styles. Pretty!

The original pickup positioning ... learning from design mistakes is overrated. A third pup smack-dab in the middle - there sure is enough room for it on this instrument! - might work wonders and keep those people happy who want the original pup positioning for treble and bass.

I have an early 80ies one I believe, shortly before they stopped making them. The sound of it is neither as great as legend might have it nor as bad as conventional wisdom seems to indicate. If you're fine with a bass that doesn't have the strongest cut-thru-mids, then you can get it to sound good, if somewhat scooped, with some tweaking. But it's not an automatic signature sound like, say, a 4001/4003.

Still, I'm happy to see it return to production, it has always looked great.

But cell phone cameras are still being made ;)

You want a pic? I'll have to take one then and see whether my photobucket account still works.

You're preaching colors to the blind, Ilan. I have no idea how that goes. We have a 24 hour IT Help Desk for stuff like that. Direct from iPhone (hell, I'm still missing my BlackBerry!) to this site without an intermediary storage? Since when? That never worked in the past.

And don't use any tekkie language explaining it!

That bass escaped any pics in the past, but it's in excellent condition, Mapleglo. From The Netherlands with the Warwickhoer acting as agent. I hasten to add that I paid for it and no occupation administration measures were involved!
