The Outpost Cafe / Re: Good Ol' Classic Blues Songs

I'd heard a song or two from Snooks over the years but I re-discovered him maybe six months ago and listened to everything of his I could find. He was very eclectic, claimed to have a live repertoire of 2500 songs. Lots of acoustic stuff that I'm really not that interested in but there's plenty of other stuff that's just great.

Here's another simple little tune that I couldn't get out of my head for several months:

I think this may be my favorite Guitar/bass/drums band of all time. The first is an old O'Jays (actually older than that) tune. Not really a blues I guess, but more so than Deep Purple :)

The second is a blues for sure and has its own intro:

There' a few others on YouToob as well; The Meters and Robben Ford. I like the original best though. Really nice sparsely layered, syncopated, simplistic groove that's very different. It also refreshingly has no guitar solo!!!!!

Interesting and well done article. So the Nuge is definitely a liar no matter what. What really annoys me about Nugent is my suspicion that his hateful rantings relate more to his career than and desire for a crusade. Before all of his Obama bashing he was a has-been second tier old rocker. Now he regularly makes the national news. OK so he got a few concerts canceled but overall his recent shenanigans have boosted his popularity way beyond what his crappy music deserves. (OK, so I'm not a fan. I probably like Dave Mathews better)

Nugent is very much like Rush Limbaugh: if he's not in the news presently, a more outrageous statement is needed. Just not quite outrageous enough for the Secret Service to throw his ass in jail. THAT would F up his career.

Just the other day I spied a comely young lass in my rear view mirror while stopped at a traffic light. She was nothing special. Maybe a little cute because she was young but that's not why I peered at her for so long though the safety of my mirror and sunglasses.

She was singing along with whatever music was playing in her car. Bopping and swaying, almost dancing in her seat. There was no trickery, no pretense, no one to impress with her taste. It grabbed her, touched her soul. Granted, this fantasy might have soured had I been able to here what was playing in her car but i was very aware that I was observing the magical, illogical, inexplicable attraction between music and humans.

Made me feel good.

Now maybe she was listening to Jimmy Reed or maybe it was Dave Mathews  but more than likely it was some modern pop concoction that would make my ears cry in pain. I try not to belittle this personal, mystical connection between this girl and her trashy pop tune. There's far to little magic left in the world these days.

I think you're over thinking about it. I'm not overly fond of DMB either but I'm not overly fond of lots of music. DMB has taken over the cult status of the Dead I think and I never liked them either. I wish I could remember who said of Jerry Garcia: " A waste of perfectly good drugs."

Do you like Jimmy Reed or John Lee Hooker? I do. Hardly complicated. Do you like Miles? I do. Can be pretty complicated. Do you like Stravinsky? I do. Very complicated. I've never bothered to find a logical connection between Jimmy Reed and Stravinsky that makes me like both of them.

I don't really know why I like or dislike the music I do. Do you?

Most people don't listen to music the way musicians do anyway. Most of the musicians here aren't selling music , they're selling beer. It's just not a perfect world.

There's only two kinds of music...

Good music or bad music.

I don't know who's quote this is, but it goes something like this:

"There are only two kinds of music: good or bad. I like both kinds"

I think a great reason to play a fretless bass is to develop your ear. Play it in a band and it just forces you to really listen to every note being played. Like playing any bass, your technique, the setup and the bass itself have a lot to do with the tone.
