Bass Amps & Effects / Guitar through bass amp..?
« on: March 03, 2016, 07:31:25 AM »
I'm putting some songs together and need to occasionally put some guitar chords in to test some ideas. Will the guitar do anything to my speakers? Volume would not be too loud.

Bass Amps & Effects / Maybe LOUD is listening.
« on: January 17, 2016, 11:50:54 AM »
The other day in SF GC was moving its bass department around and voila during the transition they had all the bass combos, cabs and amos all in one room. GC being what it is there was no one around so I had at it in the room with a Hofner 500/1, Fender deluxe Jazz, Fender P 1956 and a Gibson TBIV 2014. As usual I did not somehow care for the Mark Bass combos( well the 2 x 8" was interesting). The Fender Rumbles were all nicely voiced but perhaps a little boxy sounding next to the new Ampeg BA series. I was surprised because since LOUD Took over everything sound generic and as PSG stated they are made to last about a year or 2 and don't dare think you can get them repaired. Well I specifically played the BA 115 and BA 210. Both sounded surprisingly good and covered the tonal spectrum very nicely. Clear and grungy as you like. Pretty sure could go on medium to large venues and as practice amps. Might trade in my latest small rig Rumble 200 for the BA 115. I would say LOUD has listened to the barrage of deserved attacks since it took over and are interested in reed abolishing the AMPEG name.

I was recently trying our some of the new Rickenbacker, Shecter and Yamaha BB Series basses and a Fender Jazz. I just plugged into the nearest amp, it being a Fender Rumble 100. At first I thought well, these are pretty nice basses and all sounding good. I tried out some of the options on this rather small combo amp and was quite surprised how versatile it was. Impressed with the amp, there was a Rumble 200 next to it and that was that much more being 200 watts. I had my Gibson TBIV getting back from a setup and that sounded glorious on both as well. I remember the original Rumble series and not impressed. Could this new series have benefitted from the Genz Benz technology that Fender 'inherited'?

Bass Amps & Effects / Peavey TKO-65 in AMPEG Rocket Out!
« on: July 09, 2015, 03:49:34 PM »
I posted several months ago about being intrigued with the Peavey TKO-65. Well came across one the other day at a great deal and all in good physical condition and everything else in order. It is on the heavier side, but does have wheels. So putting this along side by side and comparing with my (also heavy) Ampeg Rocket 100....I prefer the Peavey. Somehow the natural tones of various Jazz, Precision,Celinder and Gibson Les Paul Signature, EB-0 and TBIV basses were preferable on all of them. This was a ear opening series of 'moments' for me. I don' t at this point need 2 heavier combos as I have several very nice lighter weight amps. So I never thought I would let the Rocket go but thats the way it goes.

Bass Amps & Effects / PEAVEY TKO 65
« on: May 25, 2015, 05:06:56 PM »
Walking through the park this afternoon i heard some music from afar. What caught my ear was the bass tone cutting through the dense trees and through the meadow. I followed my ears and came upon the shaggy group of guitars a keyboard and drums. The bass player plating an old frankenstein Fender etc. bass through a Peavey TKO 65... Wow..he put that amp through some hoops, then slowed down with some pure tone.  Afterwards I got talking and he let me have a go. Playing my own partcular style and beeing out in the open this combo covered a lot of ground. Gonna get me one

Gibson Basses / EB-4L'ers
« on: April 28, 2015, 11:49:18 AM »
Recently heard a jazz band in a small club and the bassist was playing a Gibson EB-4l. His tone really caught my attention and he seemed to use that 3 way tone slider quite a bit. His amp was a mini Ampeg stack(!!) which really caught me off guard. So this bass has temepred my interest. I recall picking up one of these years and years ago but forget most things about it, especially already having a nice EB-0. Soo looking at the pickup and it's placement intrigued me and the fact that it is long scale presents some interesting variations. Is it neck heavy? How about approximate weights on these, neing mahogany ( and '70's where weight did not seem to be an issue). Is that slider switch just a variation of the chisckenhead 4 way selector switches on the EB 3's? Any reviews or comments are welcome. I did check out Jules' site for basic specs, but would rather hear from some frontline Gison owners here. Thanks.

Gibson Basses / 2015 Thunderboid
« on: February 02, 2015, 02:04:37 PM »
Stopped in the local GC last week for some strings and having a bit of time on my hands noticed that there was no one in the newly designed bass section. I was more interested in trying out a few combos so I just grabbed a bass off the wall that I was familiar with. Now I should say that I have had 3 Thunderbirds ( one from the 60's and 2 from the last 20 years). I sold them and have been TBird free for.... About 2 years now.  Anyhow i sat down with this bass and the first thing I noticed was how light and balanced it was. It was also set up properly and did have a bit more of a ...boutique feel to it. Plugged it in and of course noticed the exposed poles and 2 little switches under the nice simple vvt (i like simplicity and do not like  lots of switches). Playing it i was surprised at some of the varying tones available and not complicated to understand).  One of the things about my previous TBirds was that if you pretty much set the V & T full on you would have that famous sound ( of course noting the differences from the '60' s version and the TB+).  Now this new ' 15 version is somewhat another animal. i actually also like the bridge and there was a significant resonance just plucking it before I plugged it in. So for me this bass was pretty nice all around. I am not really hung up on what previous TBirds models were like, I just took it on what it played, sounded and felt like.  I was intigued enough to play it for about 20 minutes before I put it back on the rack. Yes , I did notice the price when putting it back and ...... Not sure they are going to sell many of these and Yes, I did wonder what Gibson was thinking once again as I think they could have produced this for the same price as before. Perhaps the extra quality control and care in putting  it together justifies it for them, which is actually too bad, as every instrument should be fully inspected and be proudly packed and set up when they leave the factory.  I do think Uwe needs one of these and would appreciate it. I am thinking myself as well.

Fender Basses / Replacement Keys on '55CS Precision
« on: November 28, 2014, 12:52:31 PM »
I would like to replace the tuning keys on my '55 CS Precision. Main reason being they are too heavy. I heard there (perhaps here some time ago) that there was a company ( maybe Japanese ) that made a lightweight replacement key that had an exact fit and look of the elongated keys used on those bases. I don 't believe they were Gotoh.

I have a Fiesta Red Fender Road Worn (fantastic bass by the way, I never liked the idea of artificial aging, but after playing it, it definitely felt like home. this was 4 years ago now). Well I never really cared for Fiesta Red, but as I said the bass itself feels great and sounds even better. Soo what I like to do is a basic finish strip and just keep it 'natural' for now. Is this a matter of just getting some fine sand paper and 'sanding away' or what would be an alternative? I might like to do a Tobacco burst finish in the future but for now the natural appeals to me. The neck is rosewood fingerboard.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Soldering volume pots
« on: September 19, 2014, 10:56:26 AM »
Been doing some repairs on a few basses. Need to do some soldering work for connection pots etc. My local hardware said I should check the amount of degrees to make sure not too hot or enough heat to melt the solder... Any advice on the type or degrees for a soldering gun?

The Outpost Cafe / Garage practice room shared. Lighting question
« on: September 08, 2014, 11:53:17 AM »
I am setting up a practice room in my garage. However tone end of the garage the dear wife needs some overhead lighting for her projects. I thought some years back Inread here or somwhere about making sure not to use certain lighting that might effect the electrical ( noise) signals on shred circuits...  Any body have any experience or advice on this ? Thanks kindly.

Gibson Basses / Brian Ray Epi Sg (custom?) sighting
« on: August 16, 2014, 11:02:39 AM »
Paul McCartney played in San Francisco (Candlestick Park) acouple of nights ago, and Brian Ray was sporting a Black Epiphone SG long scale bass (with a pearly white pickguard and TRC). I was told that he has a Brian Ray Signature SG guitar made by Epiphone that has these same features. The bass is not on Epiphones website. In an interview not too long go, he mentioned that he really liked the tonal aspects and feel of the Epi JC Sig and started getting used to long scale basses. ( previously using the Guild M-85, then the Gibson SG bass, both short scales). As a guitarist he likes the larger Gretch guitars so the JCSig was not too cumbersome and he could still jump around on stage. The Epi he was sporting the other night did look cool. I found the Epi SG basses a little harsh sounding and did not like the long scale neck as it was too thick and neck heavy. Per haps ultra light keys might change things a bit. I'm thinking if he had Epi make this especially for him he might have addresses those glaring features considering the clout he might have by being so visible in MacCartney's band

Rickenbacker Basses / Somewhat radical neck reshape on a 400/1
« on: July 24, 2014, 04:59:09 PM »
Considering getting a 4001. Like most things about it except for the neck profile. I prefer a more jazz profile & width (1.5") at the nut. So i talked to a local luthier here in S.F. Who said he can get it close to there depending on a few things. The cost of the refret all said and done will be between $450-500. Not too bad considering I definitely cannot play comfortably with the stock Rick neck. Way too wide and beefy at the headstock. He actually did a nice job on a precision neck I had transformed into a jazz profile. Any one else done this on a Rick?

Rickenbacker Basses / Flats on a 4003
« on: January 30, 2014, 12:59:14 PM »
I'm in the serious final stages of acquiring a new 4003. However I do not want to use the RW's it comes with. I want to use flats. I have seen some serious issues mentioned about Rickenbacker necks with regards to tension, breaking etc. with higher tension strings. Now I am assuming these refer to pre 90's 4003/1 series from what I can gather. I want to make sure though. It seems Rickenbacker might have addressed this issue since then. I really am happy with the DR Vintage flats which is a relatively new string in their line and am using them on most of my Long Scale basses. I would ho with these first before the GHS, Roto flats. Any body using flats on their's ?

Rickenbacker Basses / Rick neck profile and toaster vs 4003 pups
« on: January 24, 2014, 02:31:51 PM »
I've never had any inklings towards Rickenbacker basses except that I thought they looked cool and liked Chris Squier's tone. The other day while 'browsing' I tried out a new 4003 Jetglo. Actually it was not as heavy as I thought and well balanced. The neck profile at the nut area was a little wider or heftier than I like, but not unplayable. Soo are there any Rickes with a thinner profile similiar to the Jazz vs Precision? Also what is the difference between the toaster pups and the Pups on the 4003? Incan add here that if I was to seriously consider this bass, I might file/ sand down the neck up top.
