Every year I post a list of possible NAMM bass news on the website of my magazine. Did you guys heard anything? Any rumours?
Of course I'll keep you posted about the news too.
-
Perhaps you could put a bug into Epiphone's ear to make a Thunderbird II, thank you Chris!
-
Will do!

That would be awesome!
-
Shouldn't be that hard... less parts so cheaper...
-
Fano comes with a nice Jazzmaster kinda bass with Tbird style pickups.
-
Chris, any chance you could convince Fender to make me a signature model?

Coronado EB-2 alike with a WRHB in the neck position only. ;)
-
I'd think a non reverse edition would be the next logical introduction. Seeing as how Gibson never thought a single pickup T-bird would be a wise option to offer, I wouldn't hold my breath for Epiphone to change that trend. Some more custom colors would be nice or if they could do for the Ripper what they've done for the Thunderbird, I think that would also be a crowd pleaser. It's too bad Gibson only made 350 in the last go round.

Fact, not rumor.
NAMM 2018: Gibson no-show confirmed (http://www.musicradar.com/news/namm-2018-gibson-no-show-confirmed)

A sinking ship...
-
My news until today:
- No Gibson
- Fender:
Replaces the American Vintage Series for the American Original Series. Less 'year correct' but 'period correct' and cheaper. They have a maple neck '50s P, a rosewood neck '60s P, a rosewood neck '60s J and a maple neck '70s J.
Very limited is the Parallel Universe Limited Edition '51 P bass, which is like the 60th anniversary P with a J pickup. So a Tele Bass body with PJ.
Rumble 40 Studio and Rumble 800 Stage. 40W 1x10" and 800W 2x10" with bluetooth and all kinds of effects.
- Aguilar SL 212
- Ibanez comes with its first upright bass. a 34" with stand, made by sister brand Tama.
- Tech21 brings the dUg Pinnick pedal which is a preamp kinda effects pedal with compressor, drive, ....
- Warwick's model of the year is a Streamer neck through with Aguilar preamp and pickups
- RockBoard comes with an awful lot of pedalboards which aren't Pedal Train copies anymore. They look good, come with bag or case ane you can by several modules for all kind of stuff: midi, just power, certain ways of loops. All boards have room for the modules and you can also use power supplies of other brands.
-
A new P/J? How original!
-
The funny thing is that they'll bring out a PJ in the Tele series, the purists will moan and bitch about:
- The departure from purity
- The new pickups aren't as good/bad/strong/weak/deep/rich (pick one or more) as the originals
- The fretboard is wrong (frets, wood or markers)
- Other real or imaginary issues
And then the marketplace will start buying them, mainly because they look cool and vintage. Shouldn't take long until a road worn version comes out. That will sell pretty well, too.

The Ibanez EUB:

Not my cup of tea (at all...)
-
I'd be interested in trying out one of those. Doubt I'll see one in my area, though.

With a 34 inch scale I think they sound like fretless BG's
-
Probably true. I'd like to see something more like the 40" scale range. The electric uprights interest me.
-
1/4-size uprights have 35" scale length (1/8-size have 31.5" scale length) and sound like an upright, not like a fretless electric. There are other parameters, like a piezo pickup. I tried the NS Design EUB and with the piezo pickup it had a nice uprighty tone, with the magnetic pickup it was just a fretless bass guitar.

That's really good to know! That NS Design bass is one I've researched more than once, but I haven't laid hands on one. I'd really like to test drive one, and your comments make it sound like a strong contender. Did you try the "Omni Bass" or "Upright Bass" model? The Upright scale length is 41.7", the Omni is 34", so i'm guessing it was the Omni. That 34" scale would make it an easier transition...

Didn't see anything regarding this information posted so FYI, no Gibson at NAMM 2018.

Already posted twice on the first page (replies #8 and #10). :)

Also we all know this video, at 1:14 there's a 34" bass built like a cornerless 1/4-size and played horizontally, sounds just like an upright even with its bass guitar scale.

That's impressive Ilan
I think the secret is the overstand and neck angle along with a bridge that is similar to an URB.
-
At 3:50 there's an NS Design Basscello, too. It sounds quite like an upright.
And at 4:10 there's an orange Gretsch 5123 Electromatic that's identical to the one I have. I believe they only made that color as a Guitar Center model.
They all sound pretty darn great with those fingers playing them!!

Not at the NAMM, but Las Vegas CES

Maybe Gibson chose to go to CES so it could try and push those self-tuning guitars. That's electronic, right?
-
It's a lifestyle thing. You wouldn't understand. 8)

I'm proud of being the wrong demographic.

I hoist a leg on demographics!

Did you see the news about the power outage (https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/10/16875192/ces-2018-blackout-power-outage) at CES yesterday? Probably Gibson's fault!

I wonder if Lucas company has a display there.... ;)

The Gibson/Lucas Prince of Darkness Les Paul, featuring G-Force tuners that black out on stage.
