Title: Reverend Dub King
Post by: Droombolus on April 05, 2015, 01:37:30 AM
I know this model got a real slagging here when it was released and I did agree on most of it but when I got my hands on this baby two years ago, all was forgotten ........ ;)

Sure, the PUPs look cheapo and ugly as sin and the design is all over the place but she plays like butter and she's probably the best contructed bass I own. The PUPs sound really good, albeit with a bit too much presence in the high & hi-mid frequencies for my taste ( but that's what pre-amp controls are made for, right ?!!  ??? ), and the neck is a joy. She works really nice in the band and the Rock Orange fin really stands out .......

...... and check the reactions in the audience ..... ;D

So curiousity got the better of me and I had to ask: Any other ( secretly ) converted LBO members in the meantime ?

I dig it.

Don't own one, but WANT.

When I stopped by Bass NW in Seattle a couple of years ago, they had seven Reverends hanging in a row.  Never seen that before!

I don't like the look of the big pickups on it but I like the overall look of the bass. Wish I could try one out but have yet to see one. I did mess with a different Reverend model recently and it felt very well made. Didn't have time to plug it in to see how it sounded. Same look to the pickups tho.

If it works for you, that's all that matters.

As do I. Have yet to see one north of the border, however.

Saw Meshell Ngdecello a year ago and she had one that sounded fantastic, (well no matter what she plays she sounds good, previously she was mostly armed her old Jazz bass, a Celinder and a Fender Musicmaster). I couldnt get past the looks but as you say when you get one in your hands and it feels, plays and sounds right who cares.

I think they look really cool!  If I wasn't such a cheap sonuvagun I'd own one.

There's something about the design that I find cool.  Not a fan of the pups, but the rest of it is appealing.

You sure?  Looks like she has a sig model based on their standard Thundergun model (but with a single rail P pup vs P/bucker config, as in the Dub King above):

I like that!

Same here. Nice design, IMHO doesn't look cluttered like the Dub King.

Should balance nicely too, with the extension of the upper horn and the strap mount.

I have a Reverend Brad Houser, fine bass, never had any issues with it, one of the few basses where I can't remember ever adjusting the neck. Has an authoritative sound. Sorry for the crappy pic.

There's something very 50's about that Reverend series.  Kind of like the Formica pattern that has all the interlocking boomerangs in it.

I like the looks of the Meshell model. Wish I could try one of those out.

I heard a Reverend Brad Houser played at a jam once. It sounded great.

There's something very 50's about that Reverend series.

It's the Dano styling (in terms of top/side finish) and geometric pickguard that do it methinks.

Yeah, they look very Dano, but don't feel as cheap when played. That's not knocking Longhorns, they sound nice, just feel like toys.

they will also make a sig for Mike Watt. i saw the prototype at the NAMM, but I bleieve he's not happy with it yet.

What's the prototype like? Short scale like he now prefers?

They've been working on that for a couple years, looks like.
From three years ago: http://forum.reverendguitars.com/prototype-for-mike-watt_topic10979.html
And yes, the prototype back then was a shorty.

Now that I like... just not so hot about the P in a larger chassis reminiscant of MM pup.  ... Could use more offset geometry and a deeper treble side cutaway.

Wow, that thread was started over three years ago. At least they say it's still in the works.

If it had more offset geometry, then it wouldn't be the SG/EB style Watt has liked in recent years.

This is apparently a second stage prototype:

.... but it's still not the final version :)

I like the previous stage better, except for that ugly pickup. I could deal with a regualr P, but not that MM hybrid. Given a choice, I would put a modern TB+ with mudbucker cover on there.

It already isn't though.

No one notices the Ripper/G-3/Grabber influence of the cutaway look here?

You mean the Watt Sig? Totally.

I didn't, but now I always will :)

That big square plate for the jack input looks silly and unneccessary on the top side of the body.
Title: Re: Reverend Dub King

It would keep the wood around the jack from cracking if yer cord gets yanked (e.g. the downfall of many a Triumph control plate).

That only happens if you don't secure the cord behind the strap (which I find rather stupid  )

That's like a condom.  Not 100% effective, but definitely good practice.

He (Watt) has done jacks mounted like that before on other basses...

Ah I understand. So it's a reference to a cover-up of a damage that already happened. Not to prevent it.
Do you also get stickers along with the bass to cover up scratches and dents? ;)

Yeah it needs more empty routes and holes :)
