I guess we all have had it, really big on a band, then you get side-tracked for a couple of years and then suddenly you hear something new from that band you used to like and went "WHOA!"
In my case it was Iron Maiden, as a twelve year old with my very first electric guitar I really was into them and "Somewhere in time" and "Seventh son of the seventh son" were my most played albums in my tiny collection of LP records. But then Guns N roses released "Appitite for destruction" and I found that heavy rock could be easy to play. And a few years after that Alt Rock broke and I was loving it. My mediocre skills on guitar didn't really matter anymore.
But that changed when I was watching MTV Europe's "Most wanted" as hosted by Ray Cokes in the mid nineties one evening. (This show was not a request show like the MTV USA show with the same name, "Most wanted" was a live show where Cokes would do silly stuff and have cool bands performing.) And Maiden was there with two faces I didn't recognise, Janeck Gers and Blaze Bailey. And then they started playing THIS song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=883dH84Qz10
At first I went wide eyed and then I got up from my chair and started headbanging. And after the song was done I went "DUUUUDE! I need to check that album out." After that evening I was a born again metal man. "X-factor" is one of those albums that brought me back where I belong and although Blaze Bailey could never replace Dickingson, nobody can deny that this song still is a kick ass rocker.
and for those who wonder how it would've sounded with Bruce singing...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OEdIcu8jYI
I hope they'll put it back in their setlist again.

My old high school band mates and I got together in Madison, WI about 8 years ago to see Mountain (they both lived there, I was in Cincinnati). We jammed for the first time in over 20 years that afternoon, and went to the show that night. We had a great time, and our drummer gushed over Leslie West like a 16-year-old. I talked to Richie Scarlett, who got his start with the same managers that I had used in the mid '70S.
-
To me Blaze's pitch with Iron Maiden always sounded a little flat. While that can have its charm - Paul Weller is another flat singer and so is Lucinda Williams - in some music, with Heavy Metal if you don't have perfect pitch, you'd better be a little high than a little low (a quality Dickinson excels in! ).
I like Maiden for what they stand: that blue-collarish working men's heavy metal with slight prog influences. They are an organic band, but their songwriting lacks finesse and sounds samey to me. Two types of songs: Ones that start fast and slow down and ones that start slow and speed up for the "Maiden gallop". I thought the New Musical Express' review of one of their mid-eighties albums brilliant which consisted of just one sentence. "One of the more remarkable albums of 1973 no doubt."
I still like them. They give their fans what they want and work hard at it. But their twin or even triple lead guitar work will never reach the heights of Wishbone Ash (one of their cited influences) and Judas Priest have more class and elegance in their sound to my ears. Steve Harris is more nimble as a bass player than most metal four stringers (certainly more than Priest's Ian Hill!), but his choice of notes and rhythms never ever surprises me.

It doesn't really work like that for me. I've enjoyed the current Deep Purple lineup live, but it wasn't the kind of revelation that would make me go out and look for their latest albums. It was just a welcome change from some of the disappointments (Genesis, Canned Heat, The Yardbirds, Robin Trower). Somehow I didn't take much notice of Mountain first time round, so seeing them last year was more like discovering a new band (and they were great). And then there's Dr Feelgood, which I really didn't like at all originally, but the current lineup is one of my favourites to see live.
-
i would like to see the "Killers" era maiden with Paul Dianno.i think the last record i bought from these dudes was "Seventh son of a seventh son" i still think of Dickinson as the "new guy" and Blaze who?
-
Seeing "Love" in Las Vegas, was a re-awakening to the brilliant bass work of Paul McCartney and the magic of the Beatles music that still is as hard hitting (in that show) , more so than anything today.
If your a Beatles fan I would really try to go there to see the show.
-
I'm currently revisiting Uriah Heep. I have about 7 LP's which I have converted to CD recently.
Gary Thain and Trevor Bolder....just great bassists IMHO :)
-
Oh, you should give their new album "Wake the sleeper" a listen then. Very powerful, Bernie Shaw echoes David Byron's vocal style credibly
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=uriahhe
,Phil Lanzon comes across like a mix between Jon Lord and Ken Hensley, they have a new powerful drummer (Kerslake had to stop for health reasons) and Mick Box and Trevor Bolder are still on board. That new album is widely regarded as a return to form after decades.
I still think they are a bit "poor man's Deep Purple" + lush harmonies. Their influence on bands such as Styx is probably underestimated though.

Thanks Uwe, Vocals are certainly good enough and just enough the same as Byrons without being guilty of the clone label.
They are the loudest band I have ever seen/heard. Insane volume in our home venue (The Bridgeway). Even louder than Motorhead in the same venue. Held about 1200 people back then.
Once I had the ear plugs in I could enjoy them.
-
They keep puttin' out more great Hendrix stuff:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZMEqntt3DzQ
Horns! Verry Coool
I'm readin' his bio called Roomful of Mirrors & it says he recorded a lot of stuff with acoustic guitar & Juma Sultan on congas.
I'd LOVE to hear that!
Glad to hear he went to Morocco with wealthy friends & got away from it all for awhile. There's a Moroccan flavor to the acoustic stuff with Sultan.
Evidently Jimi WAS like a SULTAN himself with the exotic rugs & tapestries & so forth he bought in Morocco...& the bevy of beauties he bedded....including Brigitte Bardot!!!!
I'm readin' books about Zep, the Doors & Harrison...I've read several books about each of them & keep learning more....
Been listenin' to these Classic Rockers a lot lately tooo

There's an unreleased album with Stephen Stills coming out. Stills recorded it with him in the late sixties or even shortly before Hendrix' death. Tapes were believed to be lost, but now Stills found them again at his home and plans to release them. Which - after they have worked out the legal side with the Hendrix estate - can't be much longer than in 10 years from now ...
-
David Crosby with David Gilmour - looks like he lost some weight.

Anyone remember Audience?
Kind of a poor man's Jethro Tull

You can get a taste of them together on Stills first solo disc, this song:

Shame it takes so long to get it all out. I LOVE HENDRIX!
I'm lovin' Joan Baez again, just heard this for the FIRST TIME today!:

Just found an AWESOME McLaughlin cd at the local Brand Art & Music Library called The Promise.
My fav track is called The Wish. AMAZING synchronized runs with guitar, drums & tablas.
There's sitar on it too but it's kind of low in the mix which is lame.
Wondering who's on Bass....
amazon has it.

In the early nineties up till mid-nineties I was really into the British band Thunder. Especially their second album Laughing At Judgement Day spent a lot of hours in my CD player. I went to a lot of live shows.
But after a while I grew tired of Thunder.
Yesterday I grabbed Laughing At Judgement Day and played it again after many years of neglect.
Man, this is a GREAT album! I'm glad I rediscovered Thunder.
-
Thunder opened for WHITESNAKE & Def Lep on some UK dates recently.
I've been lovin' HUMBLE PIE & even got some of Steve Marriot's early stuff with Small Faces.
I got really into MOUNTAIN again when I bought Nantucket Sleighride on cd.
I'd never bought the vinyl or cassette!! GREAT album! Tired Angels & the title track are AWESOME songs!!
Travelin' In The Dark is anuzza fav.
Tabla Beat Science with Bill Laswell on bass is a new fav that had slipped thru the cracks.
-
The Small Faces are so great!!
-
I haven't dug out any old Humble Pie albums, but I did grab a concert from Wolfgang's Vault, and also listened to Steve Marriott and the Original Receivers.
Also been revisiting Mott The Hoople lately. When I get home, I'll post the YouTube of "Driving Sister" with Ian Hunter's famous Hoople guitar.
-
I'm a big fan of anything Marriot ever did. Got most of his list. Only white guy comes close to Paul Rogers IMHO.
This week I've been listening to a lot of Traffic (in my car) for some reason. There was definitely a very good reason why Hendrix used Dave Mason as his number 2 man. He has some of that 'Nth' magic that Kossoff and Clapton had.

Yeah! Traffic was my fav band in the early 70s & I saw 'em A LOT including several places here in the Southland when Dave Mason toured with 'em on the WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN TOUR.
Just drove by the place where his ALONE TOGETHER album cover was shot. Beautiful hill on Topanga.
Gotta dig up that cd now....
Hendrix is at his best with Winwood on B-3 on Voodoo Chile, & with Mason helpin' out on All Along The Watchtower!!
I look forward to rainy days to put on Electric Ladyland.

This summer I've rediscovered Spirit and Spooky Tooth - but my biggest re-discovery was the iTunes release of the first Psychedelic Furs Album with bonus tracks. I was big fan of albums 2 and 3 back in the day, lost interest after that....I'd never really heard the first album.
Self-titled "Psychedelic Furs," it's part Bowie, part Lou Reed and very much ahead of its time imo. Too bad they couldn't sustain it and keep that lineup together. Here's a flashback (hey - lip-synching started way before Ashlee Simpson! ) :

yeah, like on american bandstand in the 50's. lip synching that is. i have been listening to janis joplin lately. with big brother, full tilt boogie et al.

Cool, it does have a bit of that "Waiting for the Man" about it
-
It's more than just part-Bowie. I think Mick Ronson was the producer for them.
-
For me I go away but always come back to the L.A. Guns, they're SO sleazy........they never really leave me. I love this Sullivanesque vid.....

Yeah!!! I've loved Spirit since jr. high & finally saw 'em just before Randy California checked out.
Jay Ferguson & Mark Andes went on to form Jo Jo Gunne & remember cruisin' with my high school buds listenin' to them. Had 2 or 3 of their albums on vinyl. I bought their first album on cd a coupla years ago.
Run Run Run
Love L.A. Guns too--saw 'em around '89 & again on Halloween '06.
-
I'd love to be able to play slide guitar like Matt Andes in Jo Jo Gunne.
-
I saw Jo Jo Gunne open for Jefferson Airplane. They were great. I've got a couple of their albums, and covered "Where is the Show?" from them. "Shake That Fat" is also a nice little groove. Here's "Babylon"

I really LOVE slide tooo
Warren Haynes has some instructional stuff out there.
Some say Derek Trucks is Duane Allman reincarnated.
Jo Jo Gunne reunited recently & put out an album of their Classic oldies & some new tracks.
I haven't got it yet...

I think it was by following a link that I recently re-discovered Lydia Pense and COLD BLOOD.
What a great band...soul, rock, jazz - and with Lydia Pense fronting them, a voice that wouldn't quit. I loved their stuff in the 70's.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_Blood
And here's a YouTube of You Got Me Hummin' - one of my favorites.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG521ADW4T4&feature=related
WHAT a voice, and what a solid band!! There's some excellent brass there, and great bass work.
-
Lots of great bands mentioned here, Spirit, Mountain who I saw several times back in the early 70's. Jefferson Airplane, Traffic. I rediscovered The Stooges and early Grand Funk while living in Lima, Peru several years ago. I saw The Stooges in 1969 but never saw Grand Funk. I love Mel Schacter's bass playing and sound on the first 5 or 6 LP's especially the 2nd album, the red one with the J bass on the cover. I could blast that album all night.
Same for The Stooges, especially the Raw Power stuff, I have almost all the bootleg stuff and legitimate releases. That band rocked, Raw Power has to be the most powerful and primitive stuff ever released on record. I have all three versions, the Bowie mix on LP, The Iggy mix on CD and the rough mixes, plus all the live stuff, the rough mixes that was supposed to be the second album which would have been killer. I actually like the Bowie mix the best on most songs because it's got more bottom, Iggy really unleashed it's power though, scary good.

Anyone else a fan of Neil Merryweather?

This one is more about revisiting one of the coolest bass lines. Jon Brandt really did a great job on this.

Yup. He turned up again to help this little lady out.

Did you see the review on that site? ;D
Bottom Line:
Not bad for her first album but it could have been better with a better player on bass.............

I haven't heard it but Merryweather must have either been having a bad day album or he was being told what to play because normally you cant shut him up.... he is a riffmeister.

What, no mention of the guy introducing the Badfinger clip?
The "classic" Runaways rhythm section was Jackie Fox (with Thunderbird in clip) and the late, great Sandy West.

That's a dark song, ain't it? :o
I listened to some VH the other day & the Roth era stuff seems to hold up better than the Hagar era.
They were both pretty damn cool!! VH got overplayed so much I couldn't stand any of it for a long time.
-
Yeah, it's a dark song all right. Written by Mel Tillis and loosely based on a true story.
Kenny Rogers used to do session work on bass in Houston before he hit the big time.
-
Early Rod Stewart is goin' thru my P.A. today--Every Picture Tells A Story, Blind Prayer, Gasoline Alley,
It's All Over Now, Reason To Believe, True Blue....
You Wear It Well, (I Know) I'm Losin' You....
Classic Rock!!! The Essential Collection

Funny thing is...when I wrote the song I just needed a word to rhyme with duty....
Hadn't heard the song in 30-some years! Hearin' it again now is SO coool
It wasn't on youtube when I wrote the song awhile back...I looked.

"Tell Me All The Things You Do" is my favorite Fleetwood Mac song. I discovered it when Off Broadway was doing it in their last incarnation, when they were performing as Black and Blond.

I am a huge fan of these guys. Mel and Don have to be one of THE all time great rock rhythm sections.
Mind you I hope our Mark doesn't notice Dons clobber.... ;D Wonder how he feels about wardrobe when he sees these films today?
I wonder how I would look in Mels lemon suit? :o

How about some post-Hagar Montrose? My band covered this song, but I think "Dancing Feet" is one of the band's best songs.

Ronnie still ROCKS!! Saw him twice recently with Jimmy Degrasso on drums & he had Dave Ellefson on bass the last time I saw him!!

A bit different for me, the band I got back into was the Minutemen.

how could you ever forget about the Minutemen

This should fit in nicely...a band fronted by a bass player, beware spandex warning, but the musicianship makes it forgivible..........

I didn't say I forgot about the Minutemen, just saying that after not listening to them heavily for a few years it was nice to revisit them and still really dig their music.

These guys were one of the bar circuit bands that should have gone further. I remember them coming through Chicago as The St. Louis Sheiks. Nick Furber had this huge, fat sound, despite the fact that he was a string popper. Someone on TalkBass has a whole bunch of videos posted from them.

Hey Pilgrim, thanks for the Cold Blood piece :)
I caught them way back about 1970-71 and they were dynamite. They played too a damn near empty house at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. Back when nobody dressed in anything but raggedy Levis, Linda came out on stage dressed to kill. Very sexy black dress , slit way up the side, 4-5" heels and overall looking just as sharp as she could , and sang "I just want to make love to you" like nobody has ever sang it before. The absolute sexiest, hottest ,female vocal performance I've ever seen      .......not to mention a kick ass band.
I can't believe they never went anywhere.

I feel almost "guilty pleasure like" about this one. For a time, I couldn't stand these guys. Especially in their Big-hair period of the 80's. The first 2 or 3 albums were ok, but "Dog and Butterfly" and "Bebe Le Strange" really became part of my musical DNA. One of Heart's best songs imo:

Used to do See My Way when it was new. Always loved Mick Abram's playing, Jethro Tull really changed and not for the good IMHO when he left.

I've done "Bebe Le Strange" and "Barracuda" in bands before, but "Mistral Wind" is definitely my favorite. True stoner rock.
-

Yeah! I discovered the Animals version in the 90s. Not bad, blew my mind!
The Animals were great! Simple, Classic bass lines.
I've got EVERYTHING by Heart. Nancy singin' Treat Me Well is my fav.
I have a dvd of them in '76 which is real hot!!
Saw 'em last summer & this spring.

Still Alive & Well & Johnny Winter And Live
From back when ol' JW WAS still well. I got on his tourbus & got his sig a few years back & told him I was the loudmouth who kept screamin' for Still Alive & Well & Tore Down & he smiled ear to ear as he signed my ticket...legibly!
One of the few sigs I have that can actually be read.

Back in 1970-71 Johnny , Edgar and the Allman Bros as well as a few other bands were playing at the Michigan State Fairgrounds. I was fresh out of high school , as was a drummer friend of mine who went with me.He also happens to be an albino who looks a lot like Edgar. Jonny and Edgars crew mistook him for Edgar and dragged him backstage to get ready dispite his protests. He got to meet Johnny an Edgar and the Allman bros and during their discussion they found out he was a drummer and invited up to sit in. They had two drum kits set up so they had nothing to lose. Once they got him up there and saw how good he was, they kept him up to play several tunes with both bands. The crowd loved having a local kid up there, so when the Allman bros came up they kept him going .
Talk about a dream come true for an 18 year old kid!!
Rick

Three albinos playing on one stage? That could have caused the universe to implode. ;)

Once they got him up there and saw how good he was, they kept him up to play several tunes with both bands. The crowd loved having a local kid up there, so when the Allman bros came up they kept him going .
Talk about a dream come true for an 18 year old kid!!

Wow!!! That's SO fokken coool. What's your friend's name? Bet he's famous now.
There was a guitar player in my school named Darrell Jamison who was 2 or 3 years ahead of me & a year or 2 after he graduated he came back with hair to his waist to play a gig in the high school gym. The name of his band was The Belladonna Nightmare Blues Band & all of 'em had hair to their waists & played the most incredible music I've ever heard! The music swirled around us like a HURRICANE--a tremendous psychedelic tunnel of mad boogiein'!!!
I expected him & his band to get HUGE but I never heard of him or them since!
I've googled 'em & found nothin'. Alas
I'm tryin' to push my bandm8s in that direction....

My friends name is Mike Peterson and he is not famous. He was one helluva drummer with a particularly sweet jazz technique. He moved somewhere way up in northern Michigan a few years back, but before he moved he was hardly playing at all. It's kind of sad. When we were just kids of 14-15 years old he was the hottest drummer around.

XTC was a radical shift for me back then - I had no idea songwriting could go this way.
I wish they would do something right now - great band.

In the past couple years, I've gone back to Electric Warrior and realized what a great album it is (even my 20-year-old son has a copy of the CD). It's also not as electric as I remember. I put on "Lean Woman Blues" today at a bar with a Touch Tunes jukebox.

I've been gettin' visited by a hummingbird while workin' in my yard the last coupla days, so today I remembered that good ol' song.
Saw Leon Russell sing it LIVE in '71 or '72. He put on a great show with the Shelter People.
B.B. King had a hit with it too:

I saw the Marshall Tucker band in Loveland, CO a couple of years ago. I was really impressed by the range of musical styles they played and how good they were at all of them. They were excellent! ;D

I love "No Thugs In Our House!" - good call.
OK, I see your XTC and I raise you.... KING CRIMSON (the early 80's version of 'em)! Love Bruford's hair and Belew's pink jacket - heh, the bass player Tony is ahead of his time for hairstyles.

IceHouse was an Aussie band originally called Flowers. Iva Davies was the main songwriter singer. We did a show with them in the 80's here in Adelaide at the Apollo stadium. Lovely guys and an excellent and helpful sound guy (cant remember his name now unfortunately.

HOW COME WHEN I POST VIDEOS THEY ALWAYS COME UP TWICE?

HOW COME WHEN I POST VIDEOS THEY ALWAYS COME UP TWICE?
I just fixed those two for you.
Don't use the embedding code. That makes it come out double and with extra words around the edges.
All you need to do is use the simple YouTube URL and it should come up automatically (unless embedding was disabled).
