Thoughts?

Looks like a Jazz bridge cover. Aftermarket knobs and maybe an aftermarket pickguard - hard to tell - is the guard black or mirrored? What about the color? It looks natural or maybe copper-ish - I don't think Fender offered a natural finish in 64. Regardless some decent pics would help him sell this thing.

I'm no expert, but the color thing caught me too. I don't recall a natural finish happening till early 70s.

Look here (http://www.rockabillyhall.com/bakersfieldemail.html) and scroll down close to the bottom to Jerry Ward's Bass & Amp (note that the page copyright is 2002-2004).
He was the original bassist for Merle's Strangers and played on most or all of Merle's big hits of the mid and late 60s. Also wrote some for Bonnie Owens, IIRC a couple of songs for Merle too.
If I were interested I'd certainly want more photos, but my gut feeling is that it's real, although the finish looks either stripped or worn off. Price does seem high to me but I haven't checked 64 P prices lately.

The markings on the scratchplate look pretty much identical...

Is that serial number right for 64? Seems like 62/63.
-
It probably is earlier, but don't tell the seller. :-X

Nice how it was 2k back in 2002! :)
