Other Bass Brands / Danelectro Basses & Guitars for '09
« on: January 05, 2009, 12:46:15 PM »
I came across an interesting eBay find today about pre-orders for a new '58 Danelectro Longhorn reissue. And in so doing, went over to DanGuitars.com and saw they have a 'Sneak Peak' for the new '09 Danelectros. Which look pretty sweet.
http://www.danguitars.com/2009Danos.html

They're offering the '58 Longhorn (in copperburst w/ pointer stacked knobs), and what seems to be a D-series guitar, and a D-series Baritone as well. All seem to have very era-specific stylings. And look really sharp.

Because I like bringing other peoples opinions to the table...

Saw this in my email from Bass Player Magazine:

A whole article with a comparison of some Overdrives & Fuzzs.

Other Bass Brands / A Wearable Decade?!?!
« on: October 09, 2008, 06:48:41 AM »
Thought this might be worth mentioning here since, to my knowledge, its the first Lakland I've seen on a shirt.

I was perusing the Switchfoot merchstore today after hearing about their upcoming hits CD, when I came across this shirt:
http://store2.bandfarm.com/switchfoot/product/?catID=1&prodID=567

As some of you who may know, Tim Foreman (Switchfoot's bassist), has been a fairly longtime player of Lakland and often gets them into the limelight. He was photographed with his Decade on the cover of Musicians Friend last fall. And now... On a Shirt!! ;D

Other Bass Brands / Re: New Dano Longhorns

Lol, somewhere a Rainforest breathes a sigh of relief.  ;D

They did the big reissue in '99 of the DC, U1, U2, U3, Convertible, & Longhorns. Then they added the Hodad & Mod line in somewhere after that ('00-01). Then I think the company that had/has the right to produce Danos changed hands/bankrupted/something. The next time new reissues showed up was '06, with the Longhorn with the adjustable saddle bridge and then the Dano Pro, and Dano '59 guitars the next year. Now they're issuing the Dano '63.

My guess is they're doing limited runs to increase the popularity or demand. I dunno. =)
I'm not as big a fan of the newer ('06-) reissues, not because of the hardware changes, but the lack of matching neck and headstock paintjob. I think it made the newer reissues less reminiscent of their older brethren (Minus the Dano 63', since they were shooting for the Silvertone vibe).

Also, for anyone interested, http://www.danguitars.com is a good site that has a lot of history of the Danelectro/Silvertone company and has a lot of great pics. Plus they buy and resale the Reissues and parts to upgrade/repair them.

Gibson Basses / Re: It's good thing I'm already broke...

They have a huge selection of Older Basses on here (Vox, Fender, Guild), irregardless of their business dealings.

How dare you make me lust like this! Have you no decency?!?!  ;D

Fender Basses / Re: Jaguar Bass
« on: August 22, 2008, 07:18:24 PM »
I owned three Jaguar basses up until a year ago (all at the sametime HHR, OW, SB). Fender did a poor job of grounding the electronics. All that's needed to eliminate the hum is to ground the 3 cavities where the electronics are located to one another. No shielding of the cavities is required. You can do it, but it's not necessary.

TD
Thanks! If I decide to get one (which I fear the temptation will get me one day when the cash is right) I'll make sure to do that. I always appreciate helpful advice. =)

I say snatch it up!!  I love my Dano Longhorn, it has such a great sound and is perfect for traveling (backup) or practice.
I have heard some unkind things about the newer adjustable saddle bridge, but I'm sure that the newer tuners would have to be an improvement.

I have one problem with the Jag. The J pick ups. They should have made a nice P90 like cover for the pick ups. Or even better: Chrome!
I agree with that completely. I've thought seriously about buying one, shielding the cavities (and whatever else it may take to eliminate the hum, if its present), and putting in a pair of Kent Armstrong Lipstick jazz Pickups (Like the Lakland Scheff). I just wish the pickups were a little farther apart like the Scheff.
Ohh my 'Prime Rib' dreams and ambitions. Too bad they're on a budget of 'PB&J's'  ;D

Other Bass Brands / Re: Gretsch Committee bass
« on: June 27, 2008, 03:18:42 PM »
I think I've seen one or two of these on Ebay before , but not many; and neither of them were in the great condition that this one looks to be.

I found this, here{ http://bassplaying.com/?q=user/67 }: " I have a 1980 Gretsch model 7629 "Committee" bass. It's beautifully made from walnut and maple with MOP inlays and ivory binding around the neck and head stock.
It has a single passive SuperTron pickup in the 'sweet' spot. The tone runs from extremely dark to extremely bright and twangy. The wide tonal range means I can dial in nearly any tone I want. Pretty amazing for a single Pickup.
"

I don't have a clue how it sounds personally though, but I agree it looks awesome. =) I could speculate that it might sound like the Guild B-301, or maybe like the Rickenbacker Short-scale bass (model escapes me). But thats just my speculation.

You guys make excellent points. I may just end up doing that. Might have to wait till I've got a little 'off time' from using it non-stop; maybe this fall or winter. Any suggestions on going about that??

I looked over a few articles on the net (most were just general 'Painting a Guitar' guides) that had some pretty decent instructions.  To oversimplify what I read, they suggested taping off (with auto detail tape? I think) and covering the parts to not paint with thick plastic. I guess you'd have to sand/scuff the orig sealer to give the paint something to adhere to. Then Spraying on a few coats of some Quality Auto Spraypaint. Then sealing it with some nitrocellulose sealer? Would you have to sand/blend it in with the original?

(EDIT: I should add that he makes himself very accessible - you could probably email him and at least get some idea of what to expect sound-wise out of that Devil bass.  I had corresponded with him about the history of my bass, and his assessment of it was spot-on)

So is he still making the reproductions & etc of the Old Ampeg basses out in CA?? I was looking through his site, http://xstrange.com/ , and he's got some great Ampeg info. Not to mention the recreations look amazing. I especially like the 'Short Scale',which uses Long Scale strings. I'd love to play one and see how it sounds.

I agree its a much sleeker site. I still wish they had some higher quality photos up of their basses. And something a little different for seeing the different color options (even if its similar to how Fender , G&L has colors on their site).
But other than that, I like it.
They also took down one of the Artists, Eric Halbourg of The Swaybacks, who has one of the sweetest looking Decades I've seen. You can kinda see it here: http://theswayback.com/images/Swayback_Eric_Monolith.jpg  I hope he's still playing it, and they put him back up on there.
He's back up on there now.

The Danelectro Longhorn lover in me wants the Devil Bass soooo bad. What kind of sound does it have? Is it similar to the AUB scroll, or those newer Eastwood copies? Or is it something completely different?

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Temporary Racing Stripes?
« on: June 17, 2008, 03:36:06 PM »
I've been wanting to put Competition Racing Stripes on my Gibson Thunderbird Studio since before I even won mine on Ebay. But I'm not a big fan of making permanent cosmetic changes to instruments (Cars, amps, or anything else for that matter; unless it makes them better somehow).
So... I've been looking to see if I could find some sort of removable "Static Cling" type decals that I could cut to size and put over the finish.

I know if I leave them on there too long they'll eventually fade/corrode the finish. But I figured the effect could be less permanent this way. And I could just get in a habit of removing and reapplying them I suppose.

I wondered if something like the 'Scratch Pad' might be modified for this use. If you haven't heard if it before, since they are relatively new, The Scratch Pad is a removable guard designed to protect the back finish of the guitar/bass that typically gets minor scratches and 'buckle rash'. Also they're marketing it to Stores as a way to protect the guitars they're selling. http://www.scratchpadusa.com/index.html
The only downside with the Scratch Pad is that they come in limited colors and seem to be velvet covered. Plus they have been known to have adverse effects on Nitrocellulose finished instruments.

So I thought I'd bring my question here, and see if you guys had any suggestion/ideas that I might be able to investigate and use to do this.

Just noticed 2 more Lakland Decades on Ebay today.  One sunburst w/ Rosewood and the other White w/Maple; both sporting the Chi-sonic pickups. The white with black pickguard looks fantastic, I must say. $2800

Also theres a 5 string Silver Scheff on there also.
