The Bass Zone / Multi Bass/Guitar Cases
« on: September 03, 2009, 09:44:19 AM »
I started doing some searching to see if I could find a case that could put the 2 electrics we use as a band and my bass inside one fairly sturdy case that could double as a stand as well.
So far I've found 2 cases, that are both discontinued.

A Fender case that's manufactured by Dixon that's all aircraft grade aluminum. Ultra pricey ($629).

And a Coffin Case, wooden and doesn't look as sturdy. But is cheaper than I can buy the parts to make one ($180).

I'm still looking to see if I can find one come across eBay, but I thought I'd send this over to you guys and see if you'd seen or use anything like these?

Bass Amps & Effects / Bassman TV!
« on: July 29, 2009, 11:56:29 AM »
I came across this on facebook today, Fender is releasing a "Bassman TV" series of Amps that look like little tweed TV sets of yesteryear. I think they're all tube tube driven and include an XLR out which is a definite plus & casters on some models.

You can give them a scout over, at their website (including a little commercial, and some sound bytes): http://www.fender.com/fba/bassmantv/

I was looking for a place to get some color/style options on some bass tuners and I finally came across a place that had one of the things I was looking for. Anywho, thought I might drop their site on here, in case anyone else was looking for something like this.
http://www.tkinstruments.com/id75.htm
I was looking for a bass tuner I could get with different button options (An Upgrade for my Danelectro, but still with a feel of the original plastic buttons), which they definitely have. As well as tons of color options (for a nominal fee of course).

Does anyone know of a place that has similar options but on "Grover MINI BASS MACHINE" ?
I know from Grover's site you can order Chrome, Gold, and Black finishes. But I'm looking for something white (More accurately, I'm really only looking for white Bushings & Knobs).

Also, I'm thinking about working on a project using a stacked knob setup. I know the common knobs are short chrome, and I've seen a few wooden ones. But I'm looking for something similar to the Dano ones.  I read a thread before, and have heard about the shortage of Dano stacked knobs: http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=1313.0 .

Other Bass Brands / Disappearing Scheff??
« on: January 16, 2009, 10:58:47 AM »
I guess in keeping with their new PLEK system and their own "in-house custom wound pickups and matching preamp" that Lakland has begun phasing out the Scheff Bass. I guess maybe it has to do with lessening sales and probly the fact that it uses the Kent Armstrong Lipstick Jazz pickups. But its no longer up under the Lakland website. Sad day. =(

Other Bass Brands / Longhorn Bass Case?
« on: January 09, 2009, 03:45:28 PM »
I noticed this on eBay last week and thought about making it mine till it jumped out of my 'initial price range'.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150313996990

I had planned on using it for a more sturdy case for my Longhorn Bass. It seems to be close to the dimensions that I was given for the re-issue tweed-top cases, and would certainly fit it a lot more snug. Though the price may end up being the downside as I'm trying to keep from paying more for a case than I did the bass itself.  :)
Anyone gone this route before me? Or if not, I thought I might share it in the event anyone else was looking for a case.

Other Bass Brands / Danelectro Basses & Guitars for '09
« on: January 05, 2009, 12:46:15 PM »
I came across an interesting eBay find today about pre-orders for a new '58 Danelectro Longhorn reissue. And in so doing, went over to DanGuitars.com and saw they have a 'Sneak Peak' for the new '09 Danelectros. Which look pretty sweet.
http://www.danguitars.com/2009Danos.html

They're offering the '58 Longhorn (in copperburst w/ pointer stacked knobs), and what seems to be a D-series guitar, and a D-series Baritone as well. All seem to have very era-specific stylings. And look really sharp.

Other Bass Brands / A Wearable Decade?!?!
« on: October 09, 2008, 06:48:41 AM »
Thought this might be worth mentioning here since, to my knowledge, its the first Lakland I've seen on a shirt.

I was perusing the Switchfoot merchstore today after hearing about their upcoming hits CD, when I came across this shirt:
http://store2.bandfarm.com/switchfoot/product/?catID=1&prodID=567

As some of you who may know, Tim Foreman (Switchfoot's bassist), has been a fairly longtime player of Lakland and often gets them into the limelight. He was photographed with his Decade on the cover of Musicians Friend last fall. And now... On a Shirt!! ;D

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Temporary Racing Stripes?
« on: June 17, 2008, 03:36:06 PM »
I've been wanting to put Competition Racing Stripes on my Gibson Thunderbird Studio since before I even won mine on Ebay. But I'm not a big fan of making permanent cosmetic changes to instruments (Cars, amps, or anything else for that matter; unless it makes them better somehow).
So... I've been looking to see if I could find some sort of removable "Static Cling" type decals that I could cut to size and put over the finish.

I know if I leave them on there too long they'll eventually fade/corrode the finish. But I figured the effect could be less permanent this way. And I could just get in a habit of removing and reapplying them I suppose.

I wondered if something like the 'Scratch Pad' might be modified for this use. If you haven't heard if it before, since they are relatively new, The Scratch Pad is a removable guard designed to protect the back finish of the guitar/bass that typically gets minor scratches and 'buckle rash'. Also they're marketing it to Stores as a way to protect the guitars they're selling. http://www.scratchpadusa.com/index.html
The only downside with the Scratch Pad is that they come in limited colors and seem to be velvet covered. Plus they have been known to have adverse effects on Nitrocellulose finished instruments.

So I thought I'd bring my question here, and see if you guys had any suggestion/ideas that I might be able to investigate and use to do this.

Other Bass Brands / Conqueror Project find

Saw this on the Ebay, and thought it might tickle someones fancy. And for $200 it doesn't seem like too bad a find.

Other Bass Brands / Q-tuner & Eastwood
« on: April 03, 2008, 01:38:49 PM »
While I was watching random videos on youtube today (broading my musical knowledge and wasting as much time as possible) I came across this. Its about a 1:30 sampling of an Eastwood EEB-1 bass (the Ampeg-esque fretted one) that has had the stock pickup replaced with a Q-Tuner BL-4 pickup.

I ran across Q-tuner a few months ago (it kept appearing in the ads across the top of my Gmail) and they seem to have a very neat looking/sounding pickup. For a quick overview, Q-tuner pickups are passive neodymium magnets that are adjustable through 11 M3 screws via Allen wrench. You can get them to fit jazz or humbucker sized routes, and they also sell guitar pickups in single and humbucker version.
You can check them out here: http://www.q-tuner.com/

Other Bass Brands / USA Lakland Decade (curse you Ebay!!)
« on: February 19, 2008, 02:07:15 PM »
Thought I'd post this here (I'm sure its probably already up on the Pit), in case some of you hadn't seen it yet.
This Decade has been haunting me for weeks trying to get me to bid on it, even though I certainly don't have the cash to. Mainly because its all sparkly-teal, which reminds me of my Danelectro.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280201146375

Also the same guy has a Gold Lakland Hollowbody, and elsewhere on Ebay is a gold Sheff

I just keep repeating to remind myself "I'm happy with my Thunderbird".

Gibson Basses / T-Bird Studio Strings
« on: February 06, 2008, 12:24:52 PM »
Hey guys, gals and strange green creatures from the vicinity of Betelgeuse. Just wanted to throw a little love out to ye olde Gibson Forum and ask a question.

Having recently switched from a short-scale to the Thunderbird Studio, I haven't yet had to get strings for it yet. So I thought I'd pose the question of what strings you are using for your Thunderbird (or Thunderbird Studio)? I just restrung it recently with a set of Gibson roundwounds that I found in a bargain bin at a local music store (can't remember the gauge off-hand, I'll try to update that later). But I doubt that I'll be able to find those again. So whats your Thunderbird string poison?
