I agree with all the comments about Trogly. In addition, he takes 10 minutes to make a point about something that a normal person could have explained in 30 seconds.

The CIA probably uses his videos to psychologically torture terrorists.

God I cannot stand his dumb voice. It's like having a spinal tap any time I misclick and one of his videos starts playing.

I don't understand why he is so highly rated on The Gear Page, et al. He is 'book smart' about Norlin-era Gibsons, to a degree. He gets things wrong occasionally and there is no depth to any of his analysis or assessment of instruments. He doesn't understand guitar wiring, so at best he can lift a control cavity cover and say things like "and the wiring all looks good, with nice big capacitors in there". Plus, it gals me that he can't play guitar well at all. This is his specialism, so why isn't he any good behind the wheel? For all that people can retort 'but Gruhn can't play either!', Gruhn didn't build a reputation from uploading thirty minute videos of himself surfing Reverb for bargains.


My wider gripe is that any criticism of these YouTube ubermensch is now framed as jealousy or negativity given the slightly emotionally incontinent time we now live in...

A somewhat verbose young man, agreed, but isn't talking a lot, yet saying little in tune with these influencing times? His son will at least have the benefit of extensive bedtime stories, so that's a good thing.

He left MLP in a huff a couple of years ago.  He had his fans there, but on the whole, he wasn't respected. Good riddance.

I've been waiting for an opportunity to say this, so here it is - YouTube "stars" are annoying! When people who didn't "live it", but rather read about it on Wikipedia, then go online speaking as some sort of expert, it's time to change the channel. I see it a lot in lazy "journalism" too. Is this what a couple of decades of bloggers has lead us to?

It isn't just YouTube.  Much of the Internet has given self-appointed "experts" a chance to spew their drivel.  I think maybe ignorance breeds a special type of boldness.  YouTube really is bad, though, and just seems to be getting worse.

Robert Ringer, in Looking Out For #1, coined the term Shmexpert to describe people like this. They pose as experts b/c they're desperate for attention but they don't know their subject.
