Yeah, that was hard to listen to. They probably had studio players for the original recording. Still, they had enough time since then to learn how to play or memorize a decent solo.

1/2" spacing JG's always remind me of my first Ric. 50 years since the change and the 1" spacing still looks wrong to me.

That ~1967 Ric 456 6/12 convertible is interesting!

The Mod Collection is full of ugly ass refins and a weird fixation on all possible shades of orange. They want $4.6K for this LP Special that looks like Jackson Pollock threw up all over it. Every now and then a really nice finish pops up, but most are not.

It's not really a BRIDGE pickup, it's about halfway between where a P and the rear J pickup would be.

As much as I love single pickup basses, and I really do, for me a Ric is not complete without the neck pickup. It's the Pictures Of Home sound, which for me is the epitome of Ric tone.

They did have a clear good tone / bad tone strategy, but personally when choosing a guitar I'm more inclined to go for the good tone shelf rather than the so-bad-it's-immediately-recognizable. But to each their own  ;)

I will give them this — when Paul came back from the store with his new Epi Casino, John and George immediately ordered theirs. And it did not compromise their performance. John could still get his signature crappy tone, and George, you know, could make anyhing sound good.

It's more about the pickups than body construction. Jingle-jangly single coils are good for retro and indie, heavier genres call for humbuckers.

Lennon's 325 looked fantastic but it can't hold a candle to George's Gretsch tone.

It seems that Rickenbacker guitars are used mostly in alt and indie rock, and I suspect it has a lot to do with their retro aesthetics – you don't look very alternative with a Strat or Les Paul. Personally I never found their 6-string guitars useful or comfortable. To me they sound a bit cheap and tinny.

I was going to be sarcastic and say that the fuzztone unit was put there just as a counterweight, but then I looked at the specs — 11.6lbs.! Very light for a 4/6 double neck. I have a '79 P that's heavier.

Chris is a great player and he can get an almost upright tone out of that Ric when he wants. But I don't like that he doubles the piano here. There's a very simple and effective bass part on the original recording, no need to mess it up. The head is in 9/8 and the piano is busy, why would you wannt a busy bass part under it?
