Title: Fullerton Era Vintage Reissue Basses
Post by: Hornisse on June 22, 2009, 05:13:57 PM
I was wondering what everyone thinks about the early reissue basses made in the Fullerton factory before they shut down in the mid 1980's?  I recently scored an early '83 Precision and just love the weight and the way the slab board is more period correct at the headstock than the later reissue basses.  I even like the pepperoni pick guards on these.  (although they don't look period correct! ;D)

Never owned one but the ones I'ves seen were very well made and not quite as heavy as later versions. They seem to get a lot of respect.

The later Fullertons in the regular lines were also well made, not like the sloppy workmanship you find on some of the 70s models.

That is true Dave.  I had a 1982 Jazz Bass that had the dots/binding and 4 bolt neck plate and it was built much better than my older '76 Jazz with the 3 bolt neck.  The neck pocket was much tighter.

A friend of mine had a Strat of that era for a while and he loved it.

Over the last 10 years it was my impression that the early Fullerton reissues were quite collectible. I've never heard anything bad about them. I'd say keep youR hands on that bass and enjoy it!

I've got an August 1982 '57 RI. Lightweight, great tone, wonderful finish checking.

I think I played every bass that came through town in 82-85, and they all were nice.  I played the first 82 Jazz ri that hit Wurlitzers in Boston, a cream white with orangeish guard.  Played wonderful.  But I also think the last Fullerton standards were great basses, especially the wide necked P-basses.  The last few years before they shut down the CBS factory were much better quality than the late 70s stuff, and lighter.  I think that of the very first Fender Japan and Squier things.

Nice!

Is just me or is the neck plate inset into the body?

I remember back in the 1990's there was a great shop here in town called Workhorse Guitars.  I had a chance to buy this early '57 Fullerton Reissue.  Problem was I didn't have the $600 he was asking for it.........

Thanks!
I had the bass disassembled to take detailed pictures. The neckplate was off in that shot of the body back.
