I did and then left a message for the detective once I got home and retrieved his phone number. With luck this will help the detectives with leads on the other instruments not yet found.

That's great news. Hopefully, the news gets better and they find the original thieves.

They caught at least one of the two thieves late last year but I had not heard back from the detective about the trial or any plea deals. If this really is mine, and the guy on the auction stated it's a 2004, as was mine, then here is clear evidence he was in possession at one time.

The pattern of the wood grain on the headstock is identical to yours, the two dark specks near the D tuner are a dead giveaway. Congratulations on finding your bass back.

Thanks, guys! I'm going to try t drive out today to pick it up. It's abut a 3 hour drive from here so it will be an all day road trip.
I''m debating whether to tell the guy it was stolen or just say nothing and let the detective look into it Monday.

Agreed, say nothing. You don't want to let the seller know directly in case he might knowingly be receiving stolen goods. Let the detective handle it.

Well, the JJ is back in my hands. The owner was in his late '50s or early '60s and said he was going through a divorce.  He's sold tons of old Mopar parts on eBay as well as a number of guitars and guitar related items. The only question I asked about the history of the bass was "it's an unusual bass to find around here, how did you come across it?"

He said he trades back and forth with a dealer he knows who frequently comes up with guitars he would buy if they were interesting. Now he's having to sell off a bunch of things.

After talking to him in person for about 45 minutes I really don't think he has any idea it was stolen. I felt he was trustworthy and honest and nothing he said was shady in the least. The JJ came in a TKL case and had a guitar strap inside, so at least I got a case for it!

The bass itself is still in great shape with only one or two more scratches or dings on it when I owned it before. There's residue on the back of the neck where tape had been placed, I don't know why.

Good that you heard his story and left it at that. But whether it was the dealer who traded it to him or someone that dealer got it from, somebody knows something, and since this didn't travel too far from where it was stolen, I'll bet the trail is short enough for the detective to figure it out.
