Title: F.f.f.four basses
Post by: Stjofön Big on February 21, 2008, 10:15:12 AM
Do not know whether this will work. Anyway, I am trying to include a picture that I took yesterday of my Gibsonrelated basses. If it works, I guess you all know these to the right and left, are Epiphone Embassies. They have a bit different sounds, and the colour also differs.
The black one is a smashed up Ripper I got a couple of years ago. Someone had taken the pickups from her, so, fast as lightning, I fixed her up with a Gibson T-bird pickup. I changed the pickguard, everything inside it, and the knobs. Voila! Here's the result. I have to agree with Uwe, concerning the black pickups. They sure's got att brutal sound, if you want that.
The red one is my pet. She began life as a Korean bass, with the brand name Lotus. I like the looks of the first version of the EB0 a lot, I've always wanted one, and thought this one reminded me a bit of them. But short scale is not for me. So I got hold of this mahagony bass, neck through body, and went to my luthier, Leif. As I had a '65 T-bird (or is it Embassy?) pickup laying around, I of course went for that one. Leif fixed it all. Changed tuners, bridge, pickup and knobs (from a P-bass. Those knobs looks just magnificient!). The neck is a bit fat, but after a few hours it suits just fine.
So here they are, if everything worked as it should. If not... Well, I'll talk to my kids.

Nice basses. How does the Ripper sound with the T bird pup?

Do you have any close ups of it

Aw right, you guys! I called my older brother, the drummer. He's a teacher in a class where the pupils has different difficulities. He showed me, in a most grand way, how to do it. Then I sent him the picture. This should be, hrrrm, if it works, what I intended it to look like. (Cross my fingers)

Yes, that's fine. Uwe probably won't be able to see it but the problem is with his settings.

Why not get a free account at Photobucket? Upload the pic to Photobucket, then just copy the [IMG] URL shown below your uploaded pic and paste that into the posting box here.

The problem with attachments uploaded directly is that there's very limited storage space.

Now, you guys know that it's a sin to brag, if you've got some kind of special gift. Right? Weeeel, you know, I just found out it seems like I've got a special talent for computers. Check this latest stuff!
Do you think I should keep my mouth shut?
The two basses that differs from the Gibsonites are, to the right, a Fender P 1965, and, to the left, a Bach copy of a 51 F bass.
(Hold your thumbs!)

Beautiful collection!

Goes without saying I love the Embassies and Ripper, but I think that customized Lotus is cool too - kinda like a early EB-0 meets Bartell/Hohner/Acoustic Black Widow (http://usguitars.ronsound.com/) meets Embassy.

Chromium, my friend. That hurt! Just when I thought I was getting the hang of things, and fully moving into the 21th century, you make that trick with making a picture available just by a small click on the message. Sob!
And to you, Dave, I say thank you for your advice! I guess it's back to school for me...
But before that, I must share a photo with you. I wouldn't say it's pornographic, but on the other hand, maybe...

Halløjsa, nice collection, are those bridges (on the Embassys) original?

Thanks! The bridge on the bass closest to the camera is not. It's made by a mechanic specialising in veteran cars. How come you ask?

i'm asking because i'm looking for that type of bridge for my Eb0 restoration, but i've only found warwicks and those no-brand tune o matic style ones with a tailpiece big as a mudbucker. Those on your basses, for what i can see, looks nice.

Good morning, World! Concerning those basses: I am no collector, not in any way. It's just that sometimes one must look for safety first. So is the case with the two Embassies. I first saw one on a photo on an album cover. No, not the Johnny Cash Live at San Quentin. Always thought that head belonged to a Burns Vista Sonic, until a few years ago. The record in question was one of Greg Kihns first. Anyway, when I found out what that bass was, and finally got one, I realised there had been only a little more than 500 made of them. What would happen if mine got stolen, or smashed? I had to get another one! Just in case... So I finally found one.
They are both players, no wallhangers, but it feels stupid right now to have two of them, when there's a world out there, crying for Embassies!!!
After that I got caught up with the thought of somehow getting a long scale Eb0. First I bought a worn out Gibson Ripper, with some essential stuff changed, namely the pickups and controls. A couple of the tuner keys were gone, too, whilst the bridge were in no good shape. I thought about letting my luthier change the whole body into Eb0- style, but fell in love with the sucker. No, not with my luthier, for f--ks sake! With the bass! The Ripper! So I gave her a modern T-bird pickup, and suddenly had myself a Ripperbird.
That was about the time when I saw the Lotus bass on Ebay. Got her, rebuilt her, stringed her up with the usual Roto Sounds 45-105, and got to work. Nice bass, soft sound with a little twist towards brutality.
The Fender P bass was my main bass from 1977, until I got the first Embassy. Then it was all over. But you know, you can't skip an old friend just because you find others. At least not until there's money on the table.
The Bach P-bass was given to me by my children, when I... well, you don't have to know every detail, right? That bass could be of some interest to all you awaiting news concerning the Bach T-bird. I'd say the quality is very good, no problem what so ever. Even the pickup is really good, the neck is smooth. I guess you'll all be satisfied the Czech work, when the man comes around.

They are a different kind of attachment though.

He has a black & a cherry Embassy. They look great but the pictures are kind of small. If you click on them they download to your desktop (at least on my Mac)
Title: Re: F.f.f.four basses

I wouldn't call them black and cherry. I'd rather say Dark cherry, and Light cherry.
Uwe, don't you even see a small photo? If you do, and if you have a Mac, do as Barkless says, or click on the small letters under the pic.
If you've got a PC, well you should be able to see them bigger just by clicking on the photo. I have PC at home, and Mac at work. I can see the pics of my basse any time I want. And when I get home, I can hold them, cherish them, lick the tuners. And so on.
p.s.
My wife don't understand me. What should I do?

Thanks, Barkless! Now, maybe I can get out of the closet, and walk the streets as a proud ABTL (Anonymous Bass Tuner Licker, not to be mistaken with the Anonymous Bass Tuna Lickers, that's a completely different scene!).

It could very well be the German in you, not seeing the obvious & simple, but compelled to look for the over engineered, more complicated ?

Out of respect for Mr. Stjofön's copyright on the original image, rather than repost it I made a quick sketch-artist rendering for you with my pencil:

Chromium, you're the only person  here that ever gives a friggin' damn about me, vielen Dank.  :-* And I love naive drawings!!!

Uwe

PS: Maybe Staffan can handcolor them for me or even George C., doesn't he do that for a living?

PPS: That Junior looks nice, but how anybody can buy a second Embassy after having endured the neck heaviness of the first one is beyond me! Scandinavians obviously do not learn from mistakes ...  :D ;D ;)

Oh come on, I have many prog rock, Gizmo, Kahler darts still stuck in my back!

Your not going soft on us are you?

It must have to do with the method he originally attached the pictures?

Maybe you have some sort of filter or setting to screen out those types of attachments?
