I have a real pic of Elvis playing this one somewhere. Definitely a real Gibson. not just a drawing.

Probably a Tobias. I was at Mike's old shop in Hollywood back in the early 90s and he was just finishing up a greenburst HEADLESS 4-string for "Derek" and said "Hey, you play headless...try this out"...and pulled the bass out and told me who it was for.

Mike said it was the only headless he'd ever made. Not sure if he made any others since.

It played and sounded great but was VERY heavy. I told him it weighed like a cinderblock.  He laughed and agreed it turned out heavy, then said "the best headless basses in the world are built by a guy in France named Christophe Leduc."

Mike laughed when I told him I was actually a Leduc endorser.

I later saw Tobias and Leduc at a number of trade shows hanging out. Apparently close friends.

I sometimes get "Derek's" (Harry Shearer's) mail by mistake, delivered to my house in New Orleans because he sometimes does work at the recording studio on the next block from me (same house number but different street....our mailman drinks on the job I think.)

I saw them a few times back in their prime, since I lived/played on the same club circuit.

Billy Sheehan actually did a stint IN Max Webster in the late '70s between Talas incarnations but I've never seen him mention it, so I'm guessing that maybe it didn't go well.

These are my Hamer U.S. doublenecks...the marble Californian 6 & 12 has LED dot inlays and marble graphic; the red Cali 6 & 12 was Mike Fath's who you might recall from instructional videos/DVDs/Deam Markley, etc. ads; the snakeskin octave & 7 string was a one-off for Maestro Alex Gregory who had the patent for the 7-string guitar (and heavy metal mandolin guitars) that companies paid him royalties on for years; the bass & 6-string is from 1981 and possibly Hamer first doubleneck...the Cruisebass neck/body actually predates any Cruisebasses Hamer made. The natural quilted maple one is a Chaparral 4 with a Blades 8-string bass necks. All are set neck designs, except the snakesking one.

Hamer doublenecks are pretty scarce....not sure how I managed to scarf up this many and some of the most unusual ones at that!

Fender Basses / RB Series, Anyone Got one?
« on: July 07, 2010, 06:46:31 PM »
I don't own many Fenders but these should do :)

I think there was a run of ten for the 1993 RB Series, if I recall from the neckplates...and they were all Jazz Bass bodies with figured wood and very figured necks with pao ferro fingerboards, no?

Well, oddly enough, the Prototype to the RB Series was actually done on a PBass Body!! Same Jazz profile neck with a pao ferro fingerboard though.

Burgundy Mist with a matching headstock....MMMMMMMMMMMMM. Possibly my favorite Fender color ever.

It actually has the designer of the RB Series' (Rich Briere) personal Fender SN# on the rear that all his one-offs had.

I've had this since around 2004. I happened to know Rich and he was selling off a lot of his rare personal Fender gear during a divorce at the time. We're also both big vintage SUNN fans as well.

Oh....and since Phil Kubicki was a longtime Fender employee, here are my Kubicki PBasses (Jazz profile necks) as well. The natural one laying down I sold to a former Ozzy bassist who just had to have it last year. It had a gorgeous Kubicki made PBass profile neck; bound ebony 'board and crazy birdseye figuring. The rest of the parts were late 70s Fender but a P/J PUP setup with two stacked pots for vol/pan/treble/bass and a 3 position toggle PUP selector, plus a Badass Bridge. Rod Schoepffer of Rod's Place 48th Street, NYC fame did the original build. One of his earlier customs but his name was on the headstock. He later designed for Kramer, famous players and other brands before passing away years ago. I was temped to hang onto it but M.I. really wanted it, so I caved. The nitro was crazy checked all over...very nice vibe to the bass. Was my "go to" practice bass in the living room for six months before I let it go.

Gibson Basses / Re: 1967 NR Bird in Kerry Green

An interesting sidenote on the deal I made with Joe. We had an aggrement that if he ever wanted to sell it, that it would go to me.  Two weeks after our trade, he calls me to say 'dude, you are giong to kill me'...  I knew what happened. He traded it to Scott Silver at Chicago Music Exchange for I can't remember what.

Ahhh...so it IS true!

THAT's why I was busting Joe's ballz...both my Hamer 8-strings that I sold/traded to him he traded/sold shortly later...and then called asking if I had another, saying he missed it  :)

No basses ever seem to gather any dust at Joe's house :)

Great guy...and amusing!!

The odd part about sawing off the wings is that about six months back I called Joe to tell him that I was thinking of doing exactly that to a Hamer 8-string to add TBird reverse wings to it. We talked about if it would be easier to steam out the set neck and glue it into a new setneck body.

Hence, Joe's new Hamer 12 TBird creation.

But he never mentioned anything about that NR one with the clipped wings.

You email me and I will tell you the story, Buddy. It was my first NR.

Oh, GEEEEZZZZZ!!!!!! It was one of your's???

Now I KNOW that could be true.

You are one of the only people I know who would not think twice about sawing off the wings of a NR 'Bird to make it a Reverse :)

Didn't you saw off the wing of a mint '64 'Bird and glue on the top wing of a Flying V, so your son had a wooden "shark" to play with in the bathtub?

I got scared away from this bass with the added comments at the bottom by the seller, saying that the two NR wings had been sawed off...the bass converted to a Reverse model...and later converted back to a NR with the wings reattached?!?!?!

From some of the other comments here by other former owners of this bass...is the above even true or just additional info?

The Outpost Cafe / Re: Best Rock voices
« on: June 29, 2010, 02:19:22 PM »
"Rock" is a broad term....

Robin Zander of Cheap Trick and Scott Weiland are the two with the best voices that are chameleons and can nail most any style IMO.

Paul Rodgers and Lou Gramm for that medium dirty sound.

No one mentioned a female but my pick would have to be Ann Wilson of Heart.

I also liked Joe Lynn Turner of the many sngers who had to put up with Blackmore of the years. Also a big Who fan, so I guess Daltry would be in there too. Steven Tyler maybe.

But if you are talking "metal," that's a whole different thing.

And while he's technically not a great singer, I actually really did most everything Tom Petty has ever done. Probably more due to his songwriting.

Thanks guys.

True bass players because no one has mentioned my cement gargoyle like on guitar boards :)

I actually bought the Parker because it has a 5-piece neck and have been trying to talk Ken into converting it into an 8-string (root-octave) for me.

I think you might find that this kid is a former abused alter boy, with the anger and touching issues.

I've got three acoustic basses...one of the original Lakeland made Warwick Aliens from 1993. It was actually the first one in the USA and meant for TM Stevens, after I wrote a magazine review on it. But I liked it so much I told Warwick, "send me a bill, I'm keeping it." 32-inch medium scale.

The other 4-string is a Parker PAB40 that I recently picked up. They didn't make many of them. I was surprised that when it arrived that the body is around 20 percent smaller than my other two acoustic basses but it's still about as loud. I've been playing it a lot this week as my "go to" bass, while sitting in my living room with the TV on, just to practice...probably because it is smaller.

The 5-string is an early Dillion limited edition from around 10 years ago. A fairly inexpensive bass but I've got it playing great and the B is fairly loud and not floppy.

If I plug them in I run them through an SWR Strawberry Blonde acoustic amp. You can use a Sabine FBX solo, auto feedback eliminator if you are loud enough to have problems.

I remember one of Jaco's Jazz Basses (not sure if this one) sitting in the window of "WE Buy Guitars" on 48th St. in NYC in the mid 1980s for sale....think it was in the $3000-4000 range.
