My Hope? pee bass.
« on: July 30, 2010, 12:30:52 AM »
I never had a pee bass, so some time ago I thought "what the heck, lets buy a bass kit and build one"! Thomann is selling them for 99 euros, not dirt cheap, but at least its solid wood. Ofcourse the matching of woods is terrible, so you can only do solid colors. No problem with that!

http://www.thomann.de/gr/layla_bassguitar_kit_pstyle.htm

Beware, the pictures are of awful quality.

I decided to give it to my wife to paint it, I have found a nice theme, but the real problem was that I wanted to paint the pickguard too. Painting on plastic wasn't an option, so I had to make a wooden pickguard.

The man who made me the pickguard is a priest with 2 naughty daughters. We have a saying here "a priests' child is devils grandchild"...

I installed a side jack, didn't want the cable to hide the canvas! :D
Also since its an one-pickup bass, I decided I don't really need any controls, so check out my wiring.

So here it is, its main color is dark-slimy-rotten-green of some kind.

Front

Back

Darkness

and Light

Didn't bother to cut the headstock, I liked it the way it was. Is there a hope for me?

SInce then I have upgraded the tuners (stock was awful), bridge (no problem with stock, just found a sturdier) and pickup (a Tonerider). I usually use 50-110 flats on this, to tame its trebly nature, but lately I strung it with a 5-string rounds set and tuned it BEAD to jam with a post-rock-sludge-doom-slow-supersatanic-whatever band. It plays ok, even if the fretwork isn't the best, but what the heck, its a pee.

And remember, this thread was Kenny's fault.  ;D

I'd say you have pee'd with great workmanship and artistry!

Can you write your name in the snow, too?   ;)

I thought for a moment it was Kenny's?

Love your wife's paint job, really cheery!

I think she is trying to tell you something?

I would clear coat the paint job & wet sand it flat / mirror like

I'm happy to stand by that suggestion - I used to have a standard joke to people who pushed their luck... "You have two hopes, and one of those is dead..." but I've added a third one in recent years... "live in hope..."

My compliments to your "crafty" wife... ;)

Nice! I also have that kit. I got one for an article: 'Can a guy with two left hands' make a bass out of this.' Your great bass makes me enthousiast to start soon!

I have an old 70s birds eye maple Jazz neck with black blocks from a Japanese copy. I want to install that, paint the body white myself, black guard and 'relic' it a bit.

Chris, the main problem is that most of the hardware is crap. One tuner broke while I was tuning it, its sprocket transformed to cosmic dust. Thomann sent me a replacement right away, it wasn't the same kind, but it worked untill I bought a cheap wilkinson set from ebay. Also the frets are small. The neck feels ok, but if you got a nice blockey neck, I don't find a reason not to install it, if the neck heel matches ofcourse.

But its a pee, those things doesn't really matter alot, its just two pieces of unknown origin wood screwed together, not rocket science. Build the damned thing!
