Legal bullying backfires

Delicious irony: law firm makes stupid threat, boingboing publishes it, and some very clever commenters go to work to make this entry rank first in search engines. Another example of the Streisand effect.

How to bring unwanted attention to your client

Streisand effect? Elucidate please!

The Streisand effect is what happens when someone tries to suppress information on the internet and the attempt has the effect of drawing attention to that information. It got its name when she sued a photographer for posting an aerial photo of her house on the California coast. Of course, the photo then was seen by many more people.

Nice (and a lot more tasteful than some of the other Hollywood star mansions out there). There is something positively reassuring about great wealth. I own two of her CDs - some of that brick and mortar is then mine.

Well then, by the looks of it you should be able to go pull your pieces out of the ocean following the next Big One.

Some of the comments are pretty good as well. I hadn't heard of Arkell vs. Pressdram but I like the cut of the defendant attorney's jib.

Quote from: Arkell vs. Pressdram

An unlikely piece of British legal history occurred in the case Arkell v. Pressdram. The plaintiff was the subject of an article relating to illicit payments, and for a change the magazine [Private Eye] had ample evidence to back up the article. Arkell’s lawyers wrote a letter in which, unusually, they said: “Our client’s attitude to damages will depend on the nature of your reply”. The response consisted, in part, of the following: “We would be interested to know what your client’s attitude to damages would be if the nature of our reply were as follows : F**k off”.

Academic Advantage has now fired the law firm. That's what you call locking the stable door after the horse has bolted.
