A big day!
My girlfriend Loes has some nice and affordable guitars: An Epiphone Sheraton completely modified over the years with Gibson pots, bridge, switch and so, a reissue '72 Tele Thinline, a nice Guild acoustic and she owned and sold an Epiphone SG and sparkle red LP. Oh, and I gave her a Hello Kitty Strat;) She still has that one.
Her weapon of choice the last couple of months is a sunburst '57 reissue Epiphone Les Paul jr. The one with set neck and a P100. A very cheap but als a very nice guitar. Some Gibson players were impressed by it. But yesterday she ordered the real deal: A white reissue '58 LP jr. in white. From the cheaper series with thin laquer. We hope it's in within a week or so.
Loes (for the last time?) with Epi Jr.:

Good for her.
Nothing like a simple one-pickup guitar with a wraparound bridge.
-
Yep, almost all my heroes play P90 guitars. Some of them with wraparounds.
-
Cool guitar!
I'm a long-time fan of the LP Jr. Mine is a 1986 Gibson '57 reissue - those had separate tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece - not period-correct but effective. The key to getting great clean tone from the bridge-position P90 is to dial the volume knob half-way down.
Like Dave said, "nothing like a simple one-pickup guitar"... my other Gibson (1961 ES125T) has its single P90 at the neck.
-
Congrats Loes! 8)
Leslie West of MOUNTAIN & Joey Alves of Y&T helped make the LP Jr. famous!!
-
almost nothing beats the sound of a single p90 played over an tubeamp just going over the edge.
-
Well, she can handle that too, with her British Racing Green Fender Deluxe with dark grey grille cloth and cream chickenheads:)
-
Loes looks gorgeous with that Epi Jr!
The burst matches the colour of her hair beautifully.
Great pic.
Bet she'll look great with a Gibson Jr too ;)
-
Thanks Rob! I'll forward it to Loes.
I think this pic is made by Berth's girlfriend.

The Les Paul Junior arrived in Holland at 16:32 yesterday and at 07:40 today. I guess one delivery will be body + neck and the other the headstock only?
Now waiting for the courier.
-
It's in, but I let her open the box tonight.
-
Well? We're waiting...
-
She obviously hated it ;D
-
She loves it and we'll make some pics ASAP!
-
Good, that obviously means it arrived undamaged.
-
It has this satin lacquer and you can feel and see the grain and in white it looks fabulous! White tunere are great too! It has a small dent on the side of the body, but nothing serious and it gives character to the bass. It's even pretty well tweaked: Action and intonation are great. But I bring it to the luthier's on monday to get it ready for .011 instead of the standard .009. Loes always uses .011 with wound G.
First pics:

Later this month we will record with Boilersuit, so you'll hear some songs soon!
-
I really like the satin white, it looks like the big brother (or is that sister?) of my "worn white" Melody Maker. I look forward to hearing the new songs.
BTW, stock strings on these are 10s, at least on ones shipped in the US. So neck adjustment shouldn't be as drastic as going from 9s to 11s.
-
I already thought it were .010s, but it came with an extra set of Gibson .009s, so I was in doubt. I always get new guitars to my luthier for a set-up. Even new Gibsons and Fenders sometimes need some fret dressing and always some tweeking of the set-up.
-
I couldn't agree more Chris. Not being as technically minded as some of the people on this forum its always nice feeling to get a new (or second hand) instrument back from the luthier after purchase. Looking forward to recieving my white Melody Maker too. Its in Chicago apparently. So, another week or 2 before it gets here.
-
looking good... 8)
Are you two going for a colour co-ordination...? ie what ever became of your "Doug Fyghter" Explorer...? ;)
-
Nothing wrong with not being technically minded. Everybody has some things they would rather not tackle themselves.
FWIW, my Melody Maker arrived in great shape, excellent fretwork, 3/32" action at 17th fret, .009" relief the way I was taught to measure.

Just spotted that you called "her" a bass... :o
-
:)
I'm so used to talk basses here! But yep, it really is a guitar:)
Billy A. has another bridge, some kind of P100-a-like pick up and a case with panther lining. IMHO P100s are quite dull and they have a lack of dynamics.
-
They had to have some reason to charge so much extra for the Billie Joe model, too bad they went with P100s. They don't hum, but they sure do suck.
-
P90s have so much more dynamics and sound than P100s.
I brought the guitar to my luthier today. He said it was set up really good. He changed the strings to .011, he tweaked the bridge a little bit, he really loves the guitar and he charged nothing:) Great guy!

I like the bridge on this guitar Dave. My Luthier Brian tells me that Tone Pro and Hipshot both make a wrap around Tune O matic. I've heard different attitudes towards the wrap around bridge on the MM's. I'll wait and see of course but I'm expecting to replace whats on it.
-
The wraparound on both Loes' Epi and Gibson are compensated (do you use that word in English too?), so the overal tuning is quite right, but a tiny bit off at the G and B strings. But more than workable.
-
Yeah, I hear ya Chris. The thing is if you want to use the instrument to record with (and I do) its a pain in the butt not being able to adjust the intonation. I know that its never perfect even then, but at least it makes it a bit easier to do.
-
You are right. Loes will record with that guitar, so let's hope it's okay. She only plays rhythm and some fingerpicking stuff, but no solos at the end of the fretboard, so that'll make it a bit easier.
-

As I understand it, the compensation on a compensated wraparound bridge is for a plain G and lighter strings. Since Loes uses 11s and a wound G, she might not be able to get as close.
You can adjust the overall position of the bridge using the setscrews.
And if it's still not satisfactory, there are aftermarket wraparounds with movable saddles, like the Pigtail bridge.
To me, the tone of a wraparound bridge/tailpiece outweighs the intonation issues. YMMV.
-
Thanks for this info!
I think it works for Loes as it is now, so we'll keep it that way.
-
If the brigde doesn't work chris I have an old bas ass bridge lying around here, maybe that wil ldoe the job.
-
LP Jr.s are my favorite ! She looks smashing..............................with or with out the guitar :o
-
Such a lengthy thread, yet you still haven't married her. Very patient girl, Doug.
-
Thanks Saf, but the bridge works. Two days ago I heard the first Boilersuit mixes and the Junior sounds great! I recorded with the Bird and Hiwatt.
@ Uwe... Marriage... I dunno. Nothing to do with Loes, but we don't think we need to do that. Marriage is just like a kahler or a tone control. Don't need it.

Your such a minimalist, except in your bass playing!
-
Marriage is (or at the very least, should be) a commitment to a person and is very much a 2 way street...
OTOH, it's just a piece of paper, if that's what you want it to be...
You can be married or co-habiting - the commitment is what counts...
oh, and btw, I doubt that I could believe a woman that says, "it makes no difference"; to them, "love" will always be "above the water-line"... ;)
-
"I love you, darling, but marrying you would be like bolting a Kahler onto my 4005."
What woman wouldn't find that romantic.
-
"I love you darling, now bend over and brace yourself, here comes the Kahlerdiktomy..." :o ;D :o
-
I would marry any woman unseen if she knew what a Kahler and a 4005 is!
-
i did not get married until i had been with my wife for 30 years, and that was only a year and a half ago. i guess i waited long enough. plus when you get older there are financial benfits to consider for both people.

Interesting, you got me beat. I only waited about 14 years and finally got married just before I turned 50 , about 7 years ago.
If I were a more conventional kind of guy, I would have been married and divorced at least 3 times.... probably more like 5.

We waited 10 months... 20 years back... ;)
