Gibson Basses / Re: anybody need a choke?

If the 'choke' for a Ripper is the same as an mid 60's EB-2 (same value in Henries?) then I'm for figurin' a swap of some kind.

Gibson Basses / What's Up With These 'Mudbucker-like' Pickups?
« on: May 14, 2008, 10:49:55 AM »
These started appearing a about a week or two ago on eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Chrome-Neck-Pickup-for-Gibson-EB-0-3-Bass-Guitar-30k_W0QQitemZ350060187779QQihZ022QQcategoryZ22670QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

One comes up...sells...another comes up. The 30K ohms is what has me interested. Also...the construction looks fairly accurate.

Never having seen under the hood of a newer Epiphone look-a-like neck pickup from an Epi EB-O or Epi Rivoli II...I'm curious if that's what these are?

Does anyone have the output of an Epi version of this pickup? Is it 30K ohms (plus/minus).

Lastly, does the construction of the Epi pickup look the same as the one in this auction?

All I've ever heard is that while they look similar to a Mudbucker, the Epiphone neck pickups just don't have the same characteristics. Some folks like that and some don't. Maybe someone can post a picture of the Epi pickup and output for comparison?

Hey guys...I came across these on a recent search. I thought they might make for a great project for somebody into Alembic's, Alemicized Guilds or The Grateful Dead:

My curiosity was going that way as well...what would a neck version of is pickup sound like? Was that CGI he was using for the drawings?

If you have had experiences with EB-2D's you will know how the discrepancy between the mudbucker and the bridge mini cause considerable problems with regard to a simple balanced sound when the toggle is in the 'middle' position. To utilize both pickups on an EB-2 you have to dial back the volume of the mini a very small bit to bring out the mudbucker effectively. You get very good at moving the volume knob for the mini humbucker very small increments! One would think the opposite to be true because the mudbucker is soooo much stronger than the mini but in the middle position the sound is thin and fairly anemic.

Somewhere in the past I had a stereo jack installed on an EB-2D and a couple fairly expensive (at the time) cables made with a stereo 1/4" on one end and a after a 25 foot run a pair of 1/4" mono jack...one for the mudbucker and one for the mini. I could dial in the mudbucker to optimumin one channel of my amp (Dual Showman?) and then add just the right amount and tone of the mini from the other channel to give the overall sound some point and definition...the ratio depended on the session, song, style of music etc. It dealt with the output discrepancy letting each pick be all it could be without having to interact directly with each other. The stereo cabling was a pain in the rear though...had to guard them like they were gold.

Definitely very interesting. makes me want to create an infinitely variable choke knob on my Rivoli.

Numbskull that I am...I didn't think to investigate the bass on gbase.com. As you point out...many to choose from at half the price. That IS still to high methinks as well. $1K or less...that's more like it. My GC guy was certainly dreamin'. It was an guilty pleasure to call him...direct him to gbase...and listen to his sigh as he read the list ;-)

BTW...did any of you catch the big change at GC's everywhere this last Monday?

Bain Financial bought GC last year (seems Mitt Romney is one of the owners). With the downturn in the US market bain couldn't process the purchase the way they had intended and are currently in a sort of hold position. I guess that evolved some changes in the GC business model. Monday ALL GC's locked their computers and now there are no discounted prices below the sticker sale price. Apparently they did beta testing with the 'new' price lock business model in three markets (Seattle, Atlanta and somewhere else) and found that the top three grossing GC's were infact those three markets...now it has been implemented in ALL GC's.

Side truth is you can get a managers 10% discount if you know somebody...but that's apparently it.

Ok...one of floor managers at my local GC loves Gibson SG shaped anything. He has a small collection mostly leaning towards guitars but he asked me if I was interested in his Pelham Blue '69 Melody Maker Bass. He says it's near mint and wants $3500...am I wrong or is he dreamin?

Seems incredibly high even for a custom color bass!

Perspective?? ;-)

Gibson Basses / Gibson Bass Bridge V.3 Question
« on: April 10, 2008, 01:39:32 PM »
I've been pretty much a V.1 & V.2 guy all my life. Does anyone have any spare parts or know of a source for threaded intonation adjust screws and bridge pieces for a Gibson Bass V.3 brisge...the big rectangular kind we see on 67-72 Gibson EB-O's, EB-3's and EB-2's.

Interesting note. Gibson made Epiphone Rivoli's at least through 68 (maybe some in 69) and they all seem to have the chrome V.2 two-piece bridges (V.2 bar bridges)

Any help would be appreciated.

I made a mistake...they are Hipshot locking studs. The same ones that go with their 'Baby grand' guitar bridge. They call them "SUPER STUDS".

Not a great pic but you can get the general idea here:

PS...I decided it's going to be a Rivoli Jr. Epi Rivoli peghead and a washed sunburst like you see on 64' Rivoli's ;-)

In terms of a bridge:

My first thought was to be stock and tradional...V.1 two pint..solid brass as on Gibson Electric basses (later called EB-1's), early EB-2's, EB-O's and EB-3's.

Second thought...I had a couple V.1's made out of red brass. These were cast though and my luthier suggested we take one of those and machine a groove (or grooves) in the top and use a piece of stainless steel fretwire to be the fulcrum and compensate for intonation. Kind of like the way a Hofner bridge works in terms of the pieces of fretwire that are positioned in various slots to semi-compensate for hopefully better intonation.

Third...I want to make a low profile variable bridge piece version (see pic below) of the V.1 bridge or at least a better compensated solid brass V.1

All the ideas would incorporate using two inserts (ala early two-points) and I believe I will use two locking Hipshot studs. They clamp down on the two-point bridge and are very stable. I use these same studs with my EB-2's and Rivoli's...they retrofit perfectly and are super functional in terms of solidifying the whole bridge apparatus.

Gibson Basses / Anybody Know What A Gibson 336 or 339 Are?
« on: April 06, 2008, 04:40:28 PM »
The thread about making a Blueshawk Bass got me thinkin'.

Ok...I was at my luthiers and in walks a guy carrying a bunch of slabs of really nice rosewood. Half a dozen guitar fretboards and one larger bass board piece. I When aksed if the bass board was available he said yeah and I immediately jumped on it. So I have this great thick piece of Brazillian Rosewood sitting at his shop waiting to be built into a bass. My local Gibson rep came by my teaching studio and left a relatively new release guitar called a '339' with me. Anybody familiar? It's basically a 335 (same construction and everything but with a scaled down body). A student of mine was playing it yesterday while we were recroding a song and it clicked that maybe I should have a small body EB-2 made. I have an old mudbucker with black plastic cover that's been waiting for the right bass as well.

The 339 is made of plywood like a 335. That got me thinking about the Gibson 336 which is also a scaled down 335 body but with a carved top. It is really a piece of mahogony that has been hollowed out and then maple topped. It has a center beam like a 335 or EB-2. Soooo...that's kind of where I'm headed. 336 mahogony body with a nice big late 50's/early 60's profile neck like an early EB-2, EB-O or early 2x2 Newport. Old looking late 50's/early 60's sunburst nitro finish. Black plastic mudbucker with Uwe's three position mod. I think I have an old choke as well (I like the Paul Samwell-Smith, Chas Chandler tone).

Anyway...before jumping deep into it i was hoping for some/any opinions.

Anyone have any thoughts on the viability of a small bodied EB-2?

Here are a couple reference points...first a 336:

I was offered this bass for $2800 about a week ago and after looking at all the pictures and showing them to my luthier...at that price I passed.

I'm sure others were offered the bass...clearly everyone was doubtful so up it goes on eBay.

It is going to be a very expensive fix to do right so $800 for the bass would be more like it. I doubt it will go that low. Good luck to anyone here bidding on it! We'll see soon ;-)

Gibson Basses / Re: The Schaller 460 - Too thick?
« on: March 11, 2008, 11:38:40 PM »
Here's a 460 on my 66 EB-2D...despite the angle looking really weird it works perfectly. Yeah...the roller saddles have been removed. I sat there with a screw driver and hammer in my hand thinking to myself...I'll just cut down the top around the bridge area...then opted for this instead ;-)) It is now back to stock and working just fine.

Fact is it is too bulky, too tall and just looks lame for the bass.
