I'm only planning on doing the face of the headstock, since apparently the stock tuners cover up most of the atrocities on the back.  Hopefully I'll get this bass in my hands this weekend and be able to assess the situation myself.

Thanks for the advice guys - always helpful.

The problem with wood glue is that I'd have to make sure I had pressure applied all across the surface long enough for the glue to set ( a few hours).  But I agree that for the long-term I worry how well contact cement will hold up.

And I'm not too worried about the sunburst - as long as I have a good sealer coat underneath I can always wet sand off the red and walnut and "do over" .

Plus - practice practice practice ...

Wow - neat idea - sounds like he's addressing some of the tone complaints I have about the Fender re-issues.

I had Curtis build me a pickup for my Jetstar - rebuilt from one of the recent Dearmond Turbo pickups - and he really seems to know his stuff and be meticulous.

Another question for those more experienced than I (me ?).

Was having a discussion with someone about how the Fender reissue '62 P-bass pickups, Seymour Duncan P-bass pickups and even one set of Lindy Fralin P-bass pickups all seemed TOO bright.

Are there reissue pickups that sound more like an old grey bottom (late 60s/70s) P-bass pickup ?

Would the key be less windings - more windings - different magnets ??  Grey paper ???

I'm looking for a solid sounding pickup, but without as much bite on the high-end.  The 62 reissues almost sound "clacky" to my ears - which I admit may not be the most undamaged ears in the world ... standing close to the PA at too many CBGBs all-ages shows in my youth ...

thanks

Hi guys,

I'm looking at a potential project - for a customer that is - that involves a headstock that had been doweled to cover up past damage from "extra" tuners on a Fender headstock - I don't have the bass in hand to see what was actually done, but sounds like someone wanted a 6 string or 8 string (like the idea I was exploring) Fender - but they decided to do this experiment on a real '63 P-bass.  DOH !!!!!

Anyway - the headstock has been veneered once - and right now the bass sports a matching headstock and body, but the owner would like to put the bass back to a classic 3-color sunburst - with a natural headstock.

I may be able to strip the headstock and it will look ok - or - I may have to peel off the veneer and re-veener it.

So my questions:
- has anybody done this in the past, or seen the end results, and how good can it look ?
- any advice on what kind of maple veneer to look for ?
- I'm assuming contact cement to glue it on - any other suggestions ?

I will be heavily ambering the headstock to make it look like a 60's headstock would now - so that does do some coverup.

I welcome your advice and observations.

Fender Basses / Going, going .. gone ....

A big thank you to Andy from Stoneham MA - the proud new owner of the blue Musicmaster ..

You are too kind Joe - but I am proud of how nice the Daphne blue came out - and I'm partial to Musicmaster Basses anyway.  I'm going to try to borrow my brothers white 72 MM bass so I can do a "red, white and blue" Musicmaster Bass photo shoot before I sell this one off.

I'm still working on that EB-3 - that I resprayed sorta Pelham Blue - kind of got back burnered due to some other "paying" projects - but i'll definitely let you know when that thing is ready - it has a very similar feel to the EB-0 I sold you - similar neck.

Krishna-

That looks sweet!

Still loving your old EB-0 - which you did a masterful job of restoring to its former glory, given all that it had been through.

Fender Basses / FS: 1971 Fender Musicmaster Bass, Daphne Blue Refinish
« on: March 15, 2008, 09:41:52 PM »
Hi all - I just finished assembling a long-dormant project - a little cute Musicmaster Bass, in my favorite Musicmaster color, Daphne Blue.

The bass is very cool - sounds good, as I believe all Musicmaster Basses do - funny how well a Strat pickup works for a bass !!

The bass is mostly original - except for of course the refin - though this bass did start out Daphne Blue at one point - and then suffered through roughly 4 other colors over the years. The pearl guard IS original - this is a very early example of this bass with a June 1971 neckdate and serial # 311340.

Replaced parts include:
- pickguard and neck screws
- pots and output jack
- one knob
- thumbrest

More pics at my blog - guitargarage.blogspot.com

I'm asking $575 but open to offers including partial swaps.  I'd also knock a bit off if you didn't want the original neckplate - as it would look swell on a 71 P-bass I have coming along ...

Fender Basses / Re: Question on protocol here: Selling instruments ??
« on: March 15, 2008, 09:32:15 PM »
Scary thing is that I think there are actually vintage Staggs - that were made in Belgium years ago ??  And then the name was sold off to the company we are so familiar with now ...

Thanks for the reply Dave - I will post but not overdo it - and I only sell things that have come out my "lab" !!  ;D

Fender Basses / Question on protocol here: Selling instruments ??
« on: March 15, 2008, 11:53:01 AM »
Maybe I missed something on the signup page - but what's the protocol on putting "for sale" postings up here ?   I completely understand if its a big no-no - I'd hate to suddenly see millions of spam posts for Stagg P-bass copies or ads from Musician's Friend.

Just asking as I'm planning on selling off a few pieces - I'll probably do Ebay, though selling directly to my bass playing bros (and sisters) is preferable in my opinion (wait .. that wasn't some kind of un-PC racial comment before any jumps on me !!).

I await your opinions and guidance,

thank ye,

Krishna

In addition to that frost blue color, I've also seen "kerry green" - which looked kinda like Fender's surf green (opaque, non-metallic - but lighter hue than seafoam).

I think the Embassy would look good in a number of these colors.  I like that Sunset Yellow too.  There was one on Ebay a while back (a project Newport? if I recall) that had a color like that in all of its creases and cavities.  Not sure if it was orginal, but I wouldn't be too hung up on that.

Hey Joe - actually the Kerry Green is a weird color - the Firebird below is Kerry Green - its mine and is missing most of the topcoat because I had to wet sand a mural off of it back about 12 years ago when I got it (in a pawn shop .. for $425 ...).

I know everyone is going to say "thats not green - its blue" - but the Gibson equivalent of Fender's Sonic Blue was Frost Blue, which has a much colder grey-blue hue to it than Fender's color - and no yellow tint to it at all.   You're correct that Gibson's Kerry Green is closest to Fender's Surf Green, though Gibson's color has more blue in it than Fender's color.

If I had a Frost Blue Firebird I'd put em side by side, but the supply of cheap custom color Gibsons seems to have dried up ... ;D

Back to the Epiphone colors - I think they may have had their own entire "palate" of colors - there is no gibson equivalent to the Sunset Yellow - which is a crazy bright opaque yellow nor to the Coral color - which is more of what I'd call a "76 Ball Orange" (like the gasoline company).  I've seen Epi guitars in person in both those colors and they are intensely bright.  But then again - I bet for $25 Gibson would grab a spraygun from the Gibson side of the spray shop and spray an Epi whatever you wanted.

Gibson Basses / Re: 65 NR Thunderbird on Ebay: Rare color?
« on: March 07, 2008, 08:12:37 AM »
I have seen a NR Firebird and I think a 12-string Firebird in that exact finish also - so I'm inclined to believe its original.  I think Gibson would do any color on any instrument for an extra $25 around 1966.   A good investment, eh ?

Yeah thats the one I saw Petersson playing - a few years ago at Avalon in Boston - and his tech at the time said they were trying to figure out if it was a refin or not.

Sounds like the yellow was an option - believe the color was called Sunset Yellow in the Epi catalogs circa 1966.

My old Epiphone Embassy is about due for a finish - after languishing in its case for the last decade or so.

Its currently stripped bare but complete - everything is there and in very good condition.

My question is - has anyone seen Embassies in some of the custom colors that Epiphone used on their Newport basses, Coronets, Wilshires, etc - because the base sure would be cool in something like Sunset Yellow or Orange or Metallic Green !!  But I'd like to also do it in something that's historically accurate.

Anyone have pics - distant memories - Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick had a yellow one a few years ago, but I was told by his guitar tech that they weren't sure if it was a refin or not.
