Thanks Dave, yeah I was not too happy and I had warned the seller to wrap it or brace it to make sure it couldn't be hit, that they snap off easily but the damn cases were so flimy back then too.
I'll see if I can find that place. It looks like it will be an easy repair though, it's a long diagonal break and there is a lot of surface to glue, maybe two inches. I also just got a beautiful 1973 EB-4L though that almost looks like it just came from the showroom so that made up for it I guess, the EB-4L looks better in person than it did on the store wall.

I just got a 1970 EB-3L and the headstock snapped off during transit. Anyone here know a good luthier around the Boston area that could do a good job with this? It's a good clean break so I think it will turn out nice if the guy knows what he's doing, It's way too late to try to put in a claim as it was at my brother's house for months. I told him to open it and check the headstock, and he said he did, he needs new glasses.

I think I did the single bypass but what a difference, I have no need for the baritone sound so I'll leave it as is.

I finally just did the simple mod that Chromium posted about ten years ago, haha! Went under the bridge, dug out the wire going to the choke which came undone all by itself. This thing now sounds unbelievable (1966 EB-2) Also the baritone switch still works for some reason except that there is still some bottom with it engaged and is usable unlike the original nasally tone which was devoid of bottom, it's been gathering dust for the past two or three years so time to take it out to a blues jam. Thanks.

They also had some RD Artists at a really cheap price, same colors, black and natural, the prices were somewhere around the same as for the EB4's, they were gone the next day. I seriously considered grabbing one but they're too funny looking for me.

Gibson Basses / Re: So I bought a Gibson bass again

Bought this 1970 EB-0L off eBay today for $480. Let's hope I like it more than the 1968 EB2C I once had.

Now the wait.

Wow, that was a deal and a half.

He's no Mark Agnesi, that's for sure.

I miss Agnesi, I wonder if videos are scripted? He's using all the same lines Agnesi used to use. That's a beautiful bass, I wish they had bass players playing these things though.

Gibson Basses / I wired my 65 EB-3 back to stock
« on: September 14, 2017, 07:56:16 PM »
I wired my EB-3 back to stock the other day. I had clipped the choke where it goes onto the Varitone switch taking it out of the circuit. I had done that thinking that when I used both pickups there wasn't enough bottom but I started thinking that most of them years ago were stock and they sounded good so it must be me, which it was! haha! I think the thing sounds great stock now and the pickups blend better although the bridge pickup still completely blanks out the neck mudbucker past about 8 or 9 on the knob. You would think it would be the other way around wouldn't you? I think part of the reason I get more bottom out of the pickup blend with the choke back in is that I put some La Bella Deep Talkin' flats on it. Anyone here have a similar experience to mine?

Both my '73 and '80 Ripper cases have red linings.

How wide are your Ripper case at the lower bout?

Thanks everyone, the seller will take it back, it's a nice case too bad it doesn't fit.

Gibson Basses / Re: How serious is the neck dive in an SB400?
« on: August 01, 2017, 01:58:49 PM »
Don't wait. Buy it. It's the best combo of the four SB variations (300, 400, 350 and 450). The pups and the way they are placed on both scale versions (good, but unintentional, just cost effective, this is Gibson, ok?) sound great on the long scale and while the SB 300 isn't in any way bad (the rear pup is still a long way from the bridge) it's just not as astoundingly good as the SB 400 which has the characteristic of a good 60ies Jazz Bass. The SB 350 is the worst of the SBs because of the rear pup sounding all brittle due to the proximity to the bridge on a short scale. SB 400 are also more rare than SB 300.

Here's how an unaltered SB 300 can sound (with a famous Ozzy Osbourne imposter!):

Bradley's bassist uses it all the time. An SB 400 would sound as warm and full, but more distinct.

Finally, Ilan, you're tall and lanky, an SB 300 would look like a toy on you!

In comparison to the - in some quarters: much, yet utterly unjustly derided, you know who you are out there! - SB 300, an EB-0 in Charles Bradley's music becomes basically inaudible.

The sound gets progressively worse from the first video on, so I don't think it's a fair comparison but that thing does sound good though especially in the first one with the SVT. Is it me or does that first band look like they could moonlight as a Grateful Dead clone band?

That was my first thought too, Grabber or Ripper but I just saw a late 60's Les Paul Bass case and it looks identical, I'm not sure how wide a Les Paul bass is though.

Gibson Basses / Anyone know what bass this case is for?
« on: August 01, 2017, 11:33:08 AM »
I bought this case, measured my bass (seller said was 15 1/@" at lower bout) my bass is 15 3/4" at that bout but my bass does not fit at all, he also said there seems to be some variation in EB-2 measurements over the years, both the 1966 and the 1970 measurements are the same in their catalogues. I'm trying to get the seller to let me reurtn it as I don't even think this is the right case, it's too long and even with no padding in the case my EB-2 would still not fit. Could this case maybe be for a Grabber as they were a little thinner at the lower bout (14 1/2") than an EB-2?
