Title: More T-40 action
Post by: Freuds_Cat on September 15, 2009, 08:26:18 PM
If I was more cashed up I would have bid up to Aus$650 on this. A bargain for a good bass IMHO.

I finally got my hands on one yesterday.
A 1985 Sunburst.  It exceeds everything I've ever read about them.
An instant favorite.

Nice!  I had a black early 80's model with a rosewood board and it was a light one.  I guess that is kind of rare with these basses.

Having played these basses when I was younger I must admit to having GAS especially when they continue to come up at such low prices.

These are great basses, I bought one when they first came out in 78-79 They were so much better crafted than what Fender was offering up at the time and the pickups are just amazing ! Very close to a Gibson /Fender hybrid. A while back I bought a Black and Maple one, just as good as I remember ! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/T-40003.jpg)

Cool is right.
There was a white/black/maple 78-79 PAF for sale earlier this year on TalkBass...probably the most gorgeous bass I've seen in a long time.  I saw it a week too late, and have been jonesing for one since.

I keep hearing great things about those - but also that they're heavy.  I shy away from heavy basses...maybe fortunately for my budget.

yeah they are heavy. our sets aren't that long.

I heard that, too. Funny enough, my son likes it a lot and took it to practice with his band..they couldn't believe how heavy the bass was in its original molded case. Wearing/playing it is another story: I'm using the same type of comfort strap that I use on my G&L L2K (which is also a bit on the hefty side), and the T-40 sits nicely and certainly doesn't feel like a tank. I don't gig, but I found myself pulling a 2-hour practice/jam session a few days ago.  Very comfortable, and I gotta say it again...it sounds terrific.  The acid test: I'm running it into a cheap-o Peavey TNT130, and it still sounds great.

This is quite easily the best bass purchase I've made in a real long time.

Skate Rat, if you lived in Georgia instead of Brooklyn, I suspect he'd be called General Lee.

I figured you named him after Arthur Lee.  :P

IMO the T-40 balances well. It's still heavy and I wouldn't want to do more than a 30-45 minute gig with one.

I have had a hankering for one of these for a while.  I played one first when I was in high school.  I wanted a P bass and nobody had them around used.  Back then they would go for $300-500 used in a shop.  Daddy's Junky Music in beautiful tax-free New Hampshire had the T-40s coming out their ears, and when I would go in looking for a Precision they would try to sell me the T-40. Gradually I came to both resent the heavy push and associate them with disappointment.  The ads and posters with the precious looking bass player from Journey didn't do much for me either.  I did think they offered a lot for the buck, and used these things were cheap, and still are when you consider everything out there.  When I pull the lever, it will have to be maple and natural like the lizard bass - a classic Jimmy Carter era bass.

Skate Rat, let me tell you from experience, like a T-40, that "water dragon" is gonna get heavy over time:

That black iguana is a grumpy fellow with very territorial behavior ("move or else, greeny, that is MY sun spot!"). For no particular reason I've chosen to call him Dave.  :-X

oh yeah he'll get bigger.but water dragons don't get as big as iguanas do.

All pet shops lie.   About ultimate size. And about dietary needs. "Those iguanas will become vegetarian as adults" - like hell they did!   They never ever eat iguana pellets, but they love cat food (I feed that sparingly, but they go bonkers about it), chopped liver, crickets, snails, locusts, egg as well as fresh fruit (banana and mango) and fresh salad (as well as all decorative plants I try to grow in that terrarium!). Spoiled brats. And my "vegetarian" Dave has also been known to gobble the occasional unfortunate gekko coming to close. The survivor gekkos have wised up and avoid him now.

You're keeping that water dragon nicely warm and moist?

funny thing is he doesn't really like the water that much.the only time he goes in is when he's shedding. he doen't even drink much. such a weirdo. but its there when he wants it. i do give him free reign of the house though.

I've had that too. Desert lizards (like the spiketail monitor you see in the first pic looking inquisitively into the camera) that love water (and would never see a drop of it in real life) and ones from humid habitats that just hate it and take immediate flight when you spray just a little water on them. Of the two green iguanas, one of them would probably wish to be reborn as a fish while the other's appreciation of warm water sprayed lightly over him is only ... lukewarm!

The iguanas only drink from the ground when they are really, really dehydrated - generally they prefer licking the water off themselves when I spray it on them. And of course all that fruit and salad gives them a lot of water too.

Uwe, how did your iggy lose his tail?

Uwe's question:

What's a "hail"? You mean his claws? Whem he was younger he made a habit of getting stuck with them and rearing them off through the weight of his own body. His tail is also cut (shortened), but that was done by the pre-owner, I don't do that with my iguanas and they no longer whip me with their tails. They're pretty friendly by now - Dave of course excepted! - though they don't really enjoy being taken out of the terrarium, that stresses them. But they do like to be rubbed, caressed and stroked in the terrarium. I'm probably the nice man to them "who always peels our flaky skin".

It needs to, the pg is not really flat, but slightly concave.

Go the Hydrogen balloons!  Led T40

That could also lead to the spectacular and crowd pleasing Hindenberg-T40 effect.

But you only get to use the trick once!

Just to follow up - I've had this T-40 for almost a month now and I just can't get over what a fun instrument this is.  The only downside is that I have (at least temporarily) pushed my G&L aside.

I am neither good, nor do I really aspire to do anything more than play along to some of my favorite songs & jam with my kids, but I'm getting better because I have a hard time putting it down.

The actual downside: When I travel, I like to take a bass with me...I may need to hire a Sherpa to help lug this T-40 in its case.

Yeah, it's the original plastic case from 1985.
Big, bulky & sturdy...kinda like the T-40.

Showed up today and is a lot lighter than I thought it would be.  The total weight of the package including the big plastic case was 18 pounds.  I'd say it is right at 10 pounds or even less.  Nice natural PAF T-40 goodness.  In great shape too with a little bit of discoloration around the edges of the body where the arm would go over (there are no contours on the early ones) and some wear on the black plastic part of the treble pickup from player wear.  A great deal I got from the Denver, CO Guitar Center for $285 shipped.  Here is a pic from their website.
