Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / caps, volts etc
« on: October 27, 2010, 10:28:19 AM »
I am thinking of putting some .1 MF caps in a few basses to get some extra thump.  looking on ebay the v (volts i assume)  are anywhere from 25v to 600 v.  Does the v make a difference  or is it just a needs to be above xxx..  also does it matter with active versus passive pickups.  I have a project i am working on that i decided to put one emg j pup in.  on test run  - full treble sound nice and clean  but missing the thump nwhen turning down the tone pot...     I put 25ohm pots  and .033 cap in.  after looking at emg website i realize they require a .1 MF cap....

I know most of you hate EMG's but i find they work well with certain basses or situations...

The Outpost Cafe / midnight special
« on: October 13, 2010, 08:26:44 AM »
not sure if the guys on the otherside of the pond had this show but in the early 70's the midnight special had some great performancs.  I remember this one and BBA as being my too favorites and just found this one on you tube.  awesome.

this company makes some interesting looking no quite knockoffs of ampegs, and 4005 ric etc.  anybody from the other side of the pond get to play one of these?

i always looked the 4005 look....and an ampeg that is not so valuable and more functional  than my AEB and AUB and Johnson would be cool too

Gibson Basses / maruader style pickups??
« on: July 14, 2010, 08:41:36 AM »
does anybody know if these are the same pickups used in the RD bass.  They look the same and fit the rd pickguard but what about the insides.  Blade or poles  etc.....

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Gibson-Parts-NOS-Marauder-Style-Pickups-w-Ring-/250663366756?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3a5cb37064

i am about to start a ripper rebuild and the pickups are toasted.  these might work or i have always had GAS for an RD.  that might be a doable build for me as the body is not very detailed.

Gibson Basses / bachbird case
« on: July 02, 2010, 07:28:04 AM »
I was fortunate to score a pretty good case off of feebay last weekend that looked like it would work.  A lot less than the gibson cases i saw on ebay no need to reverse the reverse ))))

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380243558877&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

my only concern was whether it would fit the bird.  i must report very snuggly at that.  clears by about  3/4 inch all the way around.

all i need is to make a little nut support.  right now i am using the strap folded up....  and a towel around the body for safety till i get the "L" bracket replaced with a ribbon or such.

some razor blade carving was necessary as it appears no instrument was actually in the case.

here is the brand and number if anyone wants to try and find another.

Other Bass Brands / Reissue basses
« on: July 01, 2010, 09:15:39 AM »
I have had a very good but expensive last 10 days. First I get my Red Th-1 Bachbird.  Then on monday I picked up an aqua Dano 63 Longscale and finally my Bruce Johnson AEB-2 arrived.  All three are nice instruments for what they represent.  Last night as i was taking some pictures and ogling my catch I started to think what is the best "reissue" i have and what else is out there.....
I have several of the epi reiisues and all are nicely built but other than the J Casady all the elctronics are disappointing.  The gibson reiisues i have found uninspiring....The bach is sweet but maybe a little short on the pickup versus the gibson tbirds.   The AEB is clearly not a traditional reiisue because it costs about $4000 and has clearly IMHO corrected many of the ampeg flaws but is not really made by ampeg.  The Dano is actually right on target but the target was pretty low to start as i can tell from my one vintage dano.  I have not played a road worn bass yet but in general the other fender reiisues i have are pretty much on the money.  i love the lull bird but again is it as good as a old bird and also not made by gibson so it falls into the Bruce Johnson,  Sadowsky etc sort of reissues to me.

So my long winded guestion is what do you think is the best reiisue bass in your arsenal.  (stock only)

mandatory pics

notice the 4 1/2 neck radius.  very different....

couple of my fender RI

and a hofner which is not really a reiisue but a cheaper model contemp

The Outpost Cafe / Best Rock voices
« on: June 28, 2010, 01:17:25 PM »
i have seen a few posting over the last month or so mentioning Steve Marriot.  For me the list is rather short for best rock voices but Steve Marriot is clearly in my top 5 and maybe top three.  I never saw this video of him with a 3 peice band but I saw him with and without the Pie.  He is so clearly underrated in my book.  though not in this video but he was a decent harp player too....

The Outpost Cafe / First concert.
« on: May 25, 2010, 12:14:46 PM »
After seeing Hornisse comments about the stones being his first concert I had a flashback moment.

my first - early 1972 at Madison Sguare Garden,  14 years old.  Jethro Tull  - first night in the states to promote the i believe soon to be released or just released -Thick as a Brick.  Most of the audience including me had not heard it yet.  One of my favs at the time - Glenn Cornick (gibson man extroardinare-tremendously underrated) had left before the  Aqualung album and i was somewhat disappointed in the commercialism (although i didn't know why i didn't love it at the time) of Aqualung.

Tull was great. they opened with thick as a brick for 45+ minutes and most of us didn't know what hit us.  They had made it to the big time.   i was hooked for life though i still miss(ed)  Glenn.
