AND FINALLY BACK TO WORK....  corporate america has allowed me back in....   Actually working at a startup Fin Tech   new buzz phrase - short for financial technology company.   pay is decent with some equity involved...

The Outpost Cafe / I AM CURED
« on: September 04, 2013, 11:29:14 AM »
Just got back from Sloane to go over my PETscan results.   I am officially cancer free and cured.  It's been an intense 7 months or so but today I can officially stop looking back and wondering.   Lots of gigs to play and basses to buy......

Thanks all for your well wishes and prayers as they very much helped get me through this ordeal.  I am not sure if my Doctors would agree but I am convinced that attitude has a big hand in helping radiation and chemo to "stomp out the monster'.

There are a few other LBO brothers out there who have  been through this so i toast all of us today.  Raising my  glass of Makers Mark   - here's to defeating the beast and all of us having long and healthy lives.... :toast:

and to the rest of you never knowing the beast and also long and healthy lives...

The Outpost Cafe / Wish me luck!!!
« on: April 15, 2013, 04:34:37 PM »
If you have noticed i have been not very active lately.  Been a tough year so far.  Got laid off from GE after 15 years on Dec 15.   Then i starting having some throat issues in late Feb.  Turns out my left tonsil had swollen to about 3 times it's normal size.   Had it removed on my birthday 03/07.  Few days later i got the call confirming it had a cancerous tumor in it.  Because of where you tonsil is, it touches lots of parts of your head and neck,   many of which they cannot operate on without major issues.   Been running back and forth to Sloane the last 3 -4 weeks in preparation.  Well today I finally started my treatment.   Scheduled 33 days of radiation and 6 days of chemo scheduled for days 1, 2,  16, 17,  31, 32.

Today was intense and I really  had no idea what to expect as the chemo was a five plus hour process.  But i feel ok and just ate a normal meal.  Supposedly I will feel really crappy as the cummulative effects can be debilitating.  All I can say is day one is over,   only 32 treatments to go and i will beat this damn thing.

WISH ME LUCK!

PS - just bought a very nice Lakland hollowbody bass to help let me continue to play with 3 plus bands for the next 8 weeks or so as it is nice light bass and soungs pretty good too... Only 2 gigs effected and backup ready.   Just no singing for a while,  maybe 3 months or more after,   oh well I get to take it easy.

Fender Basses / Fender Custom Shop
« on: April 19, 2012, 07:11:29 AM »
interesting bass.  I just don't understand where Fender and the custom shop price structure comes from.  I cannot believe anyone actually ever  buys this stuff.  I thought the lotto bass was insane at 5000. which they now make a close copy for about 600

Bass Amps & Effects / NAD sort of
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:04:59 AM »
thanks to a few of you I have been returning to my tube roots,  more on a collection versus gigging basis but....

over the last year or so i have "found" 2 ampeg  B 15S's,  a early 70's B15N and am awaiting repair and delivery of a mid 60's b15.  Most recently i have been on a musicman search and have found a few  HD 130 heads and received a 2 12 cab on sunday.

required pix.

with flash

Cabinet on the right is the 15 JBL ,  on the left 2 12's 4 ohms. Head on the left has still strong EL 34's Sylvania IIRC and the other I just had my tech put in some JJ 6ca7's.  So far i like the JJ's.  seem beefier all around.  better lows and stronger mid, less bright.

While on my tube kick i finally got around to having an old friend fixed.

sitting on top of a 4 12 cab with 4 deltas in it,  2 LF .  the univox had  some issues but is now working great.  only 50 watts but wonderfully warm and dirty in a delicious way.   According to my tech a very good japanese clone of a marshall.  gig this weekend in a small pup will be seeing a tube amp of some kind.

PS another interesting fact.  the MM heads are wired in series for speakers.  so 2 4 ohm cabs are 8 ohms if thru head but 2 ohm if thru daisy chained....

So I woke up today and i am 55.      Holy shit!!!     where did the last 25 years go????

Mind memeory is somewhat foggy but seems more like a long 10,  certainly not 25.

I will sign up for 25 more but hoping  they seem to go slower so i can enjoy them more.  Maybe after retirement it slows down????

Bass Amps & Effects / NAD - odyssey
« on: November 18, 2011, 10:40:47 AM »
Had a gig about 2 months ago and my 3 month old  eden head crapped out  first song.  Anl as i am i always have another head in my rack so  3 minutes and my backup in this rack  GK 600 Backline ,  is on and i finish the gig.  My next few gigs i pretty much make do with  a few amps i have around....

So i go to GC  on a sunday (only place open)  and start my odyssey.  First purchase  - Ampeg PF 500 head  - new class d made in china but great reviews.
  http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/ampeg-pf-500-portaflex-500w-bass-amp-head/h71373000000000?src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=765395754
On tuesday thanks to talkbass i find a great deal on a micro Eden head  from Amazon (even thgough the other crapped out ) so i can't resist a deal.. IIRC about $250 dollars versus the 450 normal

Gig following saturday night third song - Jessica not the heaviest tune .... the new ampeg head starts to cut out as i dug in only  - limiter/ compressor etc...)   as it somehow reached its peak very prematurely  ;)  Could n't get it to happen at home next day but....  Fourth  tune i hook up the new micro eden head.  sounds great but the limiter light is coming on and it is clearly undepowered.  (only 264 watts so i didn't expect that much.  We were pretty loud as 6 peices for that gig. Everyone through PA but me....but not a hugh room and the guitarist on my side is way too loud and his brown fender clapton type amp is on a box so right at my ear level.  Few songs later I switch to the GK 600 BAckline amp  and i am fine volume wise for the resyt of the night.

Really like the sound of the new micro Eden ( 3lbs )  and decide it is a keeper for smaller venues and softer groups i gig with.   New Ampeg has to go back.  Off to GC and return it.  Next day GC has a clearance on a Markbass Sd 1200 head.  very expensive head but MB stuff highly rated etc.  The clearance is for $650 on a  $1100 head  so i have to give it a whirl.  Takes GC 3 days to get me one and finally one ships from indiana.  Shows up and it is clearly used head..  Decide to give it a try to see if i like it and it is awesome sounding.  any sound from very vintage tubey to very modern.  really like it.  Give music 123 a try to se if they will match the price of the clearance price. they do so i order it and am very excited.  next day backorder  notice.... WTF.  but i can wait.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/markbass-sd-1200-bass-amp-head

Sunday rolls around and i go back to GC to return the clearance markbass head.  Clearance items are not returnable except if damaged.  Again WTF.  So i start to make a  scene in the store ,  on purpose,  about getting a used item not new.  Manager agrees to give me a credit.  Not really what i want but I go into negotiation mode.  I willtake the credit if and only if you A give me a new markbass sd1200 or B you sell me a ampeg SVT 7 pro for the best price i can get delivered.  He  agrees to the later as the markbass for half off he refuses to do because they don't have in stock and to order to " lose money " he will get in trouble.  not sure i believe him but...  Best price for the Ampeg SVT 7 is 699 tax and delivery included.   so he honors that deal after about 30 minutes of arguing over tax..

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/ampeg-svt7pro-1000w-class-d-bass-amp-head

ampeg shows up on wednesday.  will try out tonight .

Thursday at work phone rings - first Eden amp is fixed.   So i have 4 new amps -  time will tell which ones are keepers.

I can't believe it happened again for us in CT.  Storm blasted us on saturday  Between 15-18" snow but that was the easy part.  Thanks to being so early thge leaves served as catching gloves for the snow.  My whole town is shut down again.   No electricity,  heat , water,  etc.  estimate is weekend.  Like the last time tree lined streets are beautiful and foolish.  I have abpout 6 or 7   60-70ft  trees damaged  and a japanes maple split 3 ways  - front porch,  roof  and front lawn...
My office  - only 13 miles away has full power.....

Bass Amps & Effects / NAD - ampeg portoflex 500
« on: October 17, 2011, 09:21:22 AM »
So on a gig friday the 3rd song of the night my 4 month old Eden amp craps out.  volume starts to drop and then nothing except occassional extremely loud booming notes.  luckily after many a tube amp folly i always bring a second head.  quick change over to my standby GK head - backline 600.  really crappy but got it really cheap $140 and light and small so fits in a case that i leave next to my amp.  First break able to hook up my sans amp to get a better sound so disaster avoided.
So here is/was my dilema.  I bought the eden online and i know it will be a while to get it fixed.  Didn't really want to fork over much money but upcoming gigs and trying to not haul bigger stuff for smaller venues......
Solution - i had some old cabs that were not ever going to  be used again.  2 - trace elliot - 1 - 15 and 1-18 and a no name 4 10 that actually sounds pretty good.  Trip to GC and of course get totally ripped off on the trade in but cleared out some space and i have over 25 cabs so what the heck....Tried to get a markbass head that they had on closeout but only 3 left in chain and all in for repairs.  then i tried the new portoflex ampeg heads.  - very typical ampeg sound but in a nice small package.  available with a replica of the old 60's b15 cabs but backordered of course.  Both heads sounded pretty good.  went with the PF500 fversus the 350 or the extra head room and other items like hi and low boost,  controllable 0-10 ( not 11)  compressor,  less important di pre and post eq...

Got it home and tried it out with various cabs.  sounds great with all my older style cabs especially a sealed 4 12 cab.  Not great with a few modern sounding 3 way cabs i have.  On the honking side.   great with all of my 15 speaker cabs (will try out a  6-10 cab tonight)    more to follow and picture too
