Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson Midtown Pickup Advice
« on: June 16, 2018, 09:53:32 AM »
Maybe Gibson has changed the pickups then, or maybe the epoxy potting has come loose.

I wonder if potting will prevent a pickup from being microphonic in the same way as waxing the winding. The epoxy potting I've seen mostly serves the purpose of keeping the coils within a casing. That does'nt necessarily keep the windings still in case it has'nt been wound tight enough. The wax on OTOH penetrates the coil and fill the air gaps within the coil. This is a photo of the neck pickup on the 2005 SG Reissue I used to own but traded for an SG-Z bass:

Looks like clear epoxy.

Yes SED's are good but getting rare and expensive. I've been happy with TAD's tubes so far. I retubed my Orange AD200B MK2 (6550's), Hiwatt DR201 (KT88's) as well as built the TAD 150WSB amp kit all using their "Premium" tubes. Time will tell if their testing procedure is worth the extra cost.

That wouldn't work with a stain. Waterbased stain will creep underneath the masking tape.
Don't ask me how I know this
Haha, alright. I got curious because I wrote earlier from memory so I looked it up. This is how Warmoth describe their process:
"The process is to mask off the edges of the top wood, then spray or dye the body. The mask is then removed before shooting the clear coats. A dark color for the body gives the most contrast."
They don't say stain, but dye. I don't know the difference to be honest.  ???

The Warmoth way turns out the same, but they first mask the edge of the top and stain or put solid finish on the rest. Then they remove the masking tape and do the clearcoat.

The binding on the topside of the body is not really a binding . It is a Paul Red Smith type binding.

Natural masked like Warmoth do? That guitar is simply gorgeous! Considering many parts of that work is very time consuming I'd say 3 weeks overdue on that guitar is well worth waiting for. Well done Rob!

 Yeah those old analog units sound so much more warm and real  compared to modern digital drum machines.

Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson EB-650 (on UK auction 16/6/18)

I payed a pretty penny for a TV yellow one. That would make me a statistical outlier. Admitedly, I was impulsive and didn't want to haggle or have to worry about being outbid. At least it seemed to be in excellent condition. I'll know for sure by Thursday when it arrives.

Nice move. About 10 years ago I was outbid on a TV yellow which had a reasonable starting price (735$ and favorable exchange rate in Swedish Crowns). Auction end was during night hours and I went cheap and laid a maximum bid of 760$. It ended close to 900$. Still a bit bugged about that since the TV yellows are quite rare. You see two tone sunbursts more often which are nice as well but if I ever buy one I'd prefer the yellow.

Most of the ones I've seen has been made in '91-'92. They are maple neck, ebony fretboard, maple body and sustain block construction. The pickups are the same TB Plus that they used in the Les Paul basses (LPB-3 model). One sold on Reverb for 1200$ but that's the cheapest I've ever seen. They are usually 2000$+. They also made the even rarer EB-750 with thicker body and mahogany neck IIRC and Bartolini pickups (as used in the LPB-2 model).

Hmmm......

Guitarist Josh Martin was still able to make headlines late last year, when he heckled Gene Simmons so hard that Gene actually left the stage to try to find him and fight him.

I have a soft spot for bindings so I really like those a lot. That fumed oak veneer should look great clear coated.

Nuce work so far! I have an LPB-3 but unfortunately I left it at our rehearsal space last weekend. But from memory I'd say the Warwick bridge is recessed flat related to the back of the body plane, not to the neck angle. Same goes for the pickup cavities. Despite the pickup rings being slanted to the neck angle the pickups really don't have enough wiggle room inside to actually follow the string angle perfectly.

I got the "Based on your location (Sweden) we have updated your currency....."-message. When i clicked the "Do not update"-button I can see the two listings. I guess it depends on Reverbs shipping settings? If shipping to Sweden is not specified I will not see the listing if my location is set to Sweden?
