The Bass Zone / RIP - Michael Davis

Sad news. Michael Davis who played bass in The MC5 and Destroy All Monsters has died of liver failure at the age of 68.

In an interview conducted in 2010, Davis looked back on the Sixties and the pop culture crucible in which the MC5 were formed.

"The energy of times of the late ‘60s was something that probably won’t ever be duplicated because at that point in time everything was changing from the post-war era into what we might call modern society and technology. When I first started playing in the MC5, a lot of things were still in black and white, not everything was in color, especially the things from Europe, what we called foreign film back then. It had a certain character back then, a lot of the photos of British bands were in black and white. It carried that rainy day mood, it wasn’t all bright and lollipops. It was somber and bluesy. It was such enormous fun to break away from being a straight kid, and dress in Carnaby fashions, skinny pants, pointy boots, little skinny ties and white shirts.

It was an era that was unique, and really a lot of fun. It had this particular soul to it, Motown was happening, everybody was very dapper, before the psychedelic thing took over. The spirit of the times is what stands out.

I believed in us (the MC5), and believed what we were doing was so unique. For me the important thing was to be original, because I came from an art background. Copying someone else’s stuff wouldn’t get the attention that I wanted. Originality was the key to any kind of long-term recognition. I wanted us to be totally original. I thought what we were doing was totally unprecedented, at least not in rock and roll. There was plenty of jazz music, Sun Ra, where people improvised and played free. When we started doing it with electric instruments I just felt the energy levels that we achieved were so profound. I could see it in the audience reactions to it. Audiences absolutely hated it or went crazy. I thought that it would have a long-term effect. But you know it wasn’t successful in the business part of it. It wasn’t that marketable. It wasn’t like the Beatles. But I actually did have a kind of a suspicion that it would be long-term. Having said that, I am really surprised it did turn out that way.”

The Bass Zone / Unusual problem
« on: February 15, 2010, 09:06:11 PM »
At my last practice I was playing the Englehardt upright when I noticed something a bit...odd.  Everytime I hit a G-note, it sounded dead and half-volume.  All the G's in every position on the neck had this problem.  Every other note sounded loud, proud, and perfect.

Anyone ever had this happen before?  I changed the batteries in the preamp which seemed to help, but not much.

Never forget:

"We shall never forget them nor the last time we saw them, as they prepared for their mission and waved good-bye and slipped the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God."

The Bass Zone / Anyone familiar with Dean Pace electric uprights?

Got a line on a farily cheap one (in black) from a friend. I'm thinking it would be a nice portable upright when I have to travel.  Any and all opinions welcome...

For those that don't know, one of my side business is haunt consulting.  I design haunted houses and train their actors.  Last month, I landed the contract for the halloween haunted attraction on the USS North Carolina.

Well, this week I traveled down to Wilmington NC to start working on the battleship.  I can see it's going to be one helluva big job.

We are developing a backstory that is pure fiction and therefore will hopefully not offend family members of those who served aboard the ship.  The story is that during a horrific storm in 2009, the USS North Carolina disappeared from it's moorings.  No one knows where or when it vanished, but 24 hours later it reappeared.  Ever since then, very strange and terrifying things have been happening and visitors to the boat have been vanishing.

Since the cast of Ghost Hunters has been asked back this fall to re-visit the ship and conduct another investigation, we are inviting the public to come 'investigate'  during the haunt season and see if they're brave enough to survive "The Ghost Ship."

The tagline they came up with is "Ghosts don't care how loud you scream."

We're planning to have most of the actors dressed in navy khakis and dungarees and will be 'assaulting' visitors with a variety of shipboard items and large amounts of strobes, klaxons, mechanical terrors, and other things that I won't mention so as to not give anything away.

One of the staff members claims to have seen a blue and purple mist near one of the officer's quarters just 2 weeks ago and the route will go along that corridor.   :o

And yes, there will be a disclaimer at the beginning stating that the battleship was NOT built for comfort, it was built for war and therefore not accessible for everyone.  The regular tours are not wheelchair-accessible and there are sharp edges, rivits, and steel everywhere.  They will be doing their best to cover up anything that has the potential to injure but I know they won't be able to get it all.

Here are a few pics of some of the areas that will be transformed...

Visitors enter the ship through this hatch:

More challenges await when I go back in a couple weeks.  If anyone is in the area, go check it out.

Amazing that I can still vaguely remember watching this (I'm only 41.).  Also that there's more computing power in my wristwatch than was probably on the entire mission...

Of course that's assuming you think it wasn't faked like several of my friends think... ::)

Just got the Bass Master RB PLUS system from Bob Gollihur on Wednesday and installed it today.  What a difference a fingerboard transducer pup makes.

I can't wait to debut it at Heavy Rebel on Friday...

The Outpost Cafe / My 4th of July will outrock yours...
« on: July 02, 2009, 06:26:01 PM »
It's that time of year when thousands will decend upon Winston-Salem NC for the 9th annual HEAVY REBEL WEEKENDER.  Three days of rock and roll, rockabilly, honky-tonk, punk, garage, metal, and loads more. The beer will be flowing (except for me who doesn't drink, the rat rods and classic beaters will be on display, the mud wrestling will be dirty, and the music for the 85+ bands will be HOT!  I'm not even going to get into the wet wifebeater show or the upright bass slapdown.

I am honored to be playing it again this year (my 6th and with a third different band.) the Rayguns will be hitting the Jailhouse stage at 5:45 on Friday and the show won't wrap up until Dash Rip Rock closes it down on Sunday night.

I hope everyone has a safe Fourth of July Holiday filled with family, friends, good food, and fireworks.  Even though it won't be as cool as mine...

www.heavyrebel.net for all the details, pics, schedules, and more.  Hopefully I'll have some pics up next week after I recover.  Denis will be there too and hopefully will make a full report after his hangover subsides...
