A TBird without Ray Dietrich's headstock is a cripple.

I've been thinking.  Mike Lull.  Mark?  Heard anything?

P

It crossed my mind, but I got nothing so far. Lull will introduce his Non Reverse at NAMM.
FWIW I kinda wish he'd just stick with Gibson - BTW I really dig the Ovation ABG, they go for how much?

Those Ovations have turned up as NOS on Ebay from about $800 to $1200 depending on the seller.

Yes, a very sad state of affairs.

You know I was a fan from the early days but this is Nikki Sixx we're talking about. Are you telling me you're surprised that the shape and look of the bass might carry more weight with him than the quality of its parts or the sound it makes? I'm shocked!

EMGs aren't bad pups, just bland. They work on some basses. And for some reason, pro musicians seem to like them, maybe it's a soundboard-friendly sound.  I find they make basses sound samey. But of course, I put them on my Kramer Flying Broom (XKB10) in the mideighties too.

EMG CS (ceramic and steel, active), EMG Hz and EMG Select (both passive) sound very different from the original 80s EMG P4s.  I just switched out the horrible P4s in my Hamer 12 for CS and have put Hz in a few basses.  Hz sound better than Duncan SBs.  I used Duncans as my original OEM because they gave me a better deal on quantity than EMG.

I'd bet most builders using EMG pickups these days are using Hz and Selects...though maybe not the ones still wearing Spandex.

They are chucking them out at a fraction of the price here in Germany. Not a seller, but then who owns an Ovation acoustic bass that you or I know?

I'll nominate my Ovation......only difference is the headstock.  Nice practice bass.

I didn't say EMGs are bad. IMHO the original EMGs are characterless.

Don't be talkin' bad about my EMG's!   ;)

Combined with the original 9v preamp by Haz they really sizzle on my Brooklyn.  I loved the original EMG SS pickups on the old L2 Steinbergers.  They sounded much better than the later HB's.  Also the original embossed EMG's (if you can find any) are warmer sounding (to me) than the latest offerings.

Another plus regarding the EMG's (at least the active ones) is that they are internally grounded thus your chances of being shocked on stage are greatly reduced. (No pesky ground wire going to the bridge)  :)
