Gibson Basses / Re: The all things chrome & shiny thread

I'm working on a virus in Marvel supervillain mode that will turn all chrome and nickel of this world irreversibly black ... (play tape with mad laughter ...)

In this, deplorably so, adolescent  innuendo-drenched and hardly bass-relevant thread, I would like to save what little decorum there is left by helpfully adding that I don't have hair color preferences either, but there should at least be a little of it.

Speaking of Kim Wilde: I always thought she sang like she had a running nose. And that "Flying to Cambodia" vid was plain dumb. Give me Cherie Currie of the Runaways anytime!

Fender Basses / Re: My Fenders
« on: January 18, 2008, 09:08:49 AM »
Actually, all my Fenders sound great whether its the MIM sixties Jazz reissue in lilac, the Sting (I love that singlecoil sound, it's so sweet and pure with a pick) or the eighties RI of a 62 P in fiesta (?) red (I never know whether that is fiesta or some kind of orange). Unfortunately, the trussrod on the 62 P Bass RI just broke - it was always kind of stubborn and it had more work to do than usual due to a warp in the neck (possibly the fact that I had it strung with D'Addario chromes in 110 gauge didn't help either).

Of course I will let it get repaired, but I'm thinking of putting on a fretless board - that bass sounds so nice it be great as a fretless. Would you Fenderistas consider that a damnation-worthy sacrilege? I'm not planning on selling it ever.

The German and the Texan had been thinking in "what if"-scenarios when it became clear that DP III wasn't gonna last forever and that Steve had a vision that transcended a traditional online forum. And I thought that any forum lives and dies with our good shepherd Dave. We shared the idea with Jules and John and they were encouraging. Of course, it could have fallen flat on its face right from the outset - so far it appears it hasn't and that is a reassuring feeling because a forum lives and thrives by being current and not sluggish.

Steve graciously wished us luck in a recent thread in DP V (this forum is unashamed in its confession that we are patterning ourselves after everything that was good in the various DPs) and I'll gladly return those wishes here for whatever he sets out to do next.

Antipodean Mark's shirt choices were always inherently manly for their intrepid verve. In a way he was/is a Dolly Parton with balls!

Fräulein Geiger otoh hand is sheer and immaculate  style.

There is no mistaking the two, Aussie-Mark has a perm, while Fräulein Rommel doesn't leave home without her natural curls ironed out!

Gibson Basses / Re: RD Standard pickups? How do they sound?
« on: January 18, 2008, 05:36:48 AM »
Frankly? Not a compelling choice. Those pups didn't cry out Gibson and time has moved on. I'd rather consider two EBMM style humbuckers (passive) or - if you want to stay Gibson - the original G-3 setup which has more balls and bite than the RD stacked humbuckers.

I've got one (the early Korean reissue) and though it feels like a toy it just sounds great and grown up. Very responsive with lots of fundamentals and balls.

I see Fraulein Rommel fondling an Epi in that pic - that girl has no shame.

Willkommen, Herr Carlston. It is only with the KISS army around that I feel safe here!

How is progress on the trussrod of your SB 300?

Ok, ok, I'll stop now ...

PS: Creationist? George? So he doesn't believe that the Thunderbird is to a Fender P what man is to a chimp, a distant relative, but altogether more developed?

Ok, touchy subject and I don't want to find myself in the wrong bracket here:

- When I wrote teenagers, I was not insinuating "he did it with adolescents who already kind of knew what they wanted and could be expected to say no". I was using teenager in a 10+x, but still pre-adolescent sense.

- MJ is a pedophile or at the very least has pedophile demons he has to struggle with. But I've seen no evidence, not even an indication that would allow to call him a rapist or even an attempted rapist. You can be a pedophile and not be a rapist, just like you can be straight, gay or an SM afficionado and not be a rapist (or ever in danger of becoming one) either. We're talking about varying shades of grey, granted, but even in that grey area  there is a line MJ has not crossed from what I can judge him on. Seduction is not rape. Even misuse of a child's affection, gratitude or guilt is not rape. I think that was portrayed vividly in Kevin Bacon's great (and brave) performance in "The Woodsman" where he played a convicted and paroled  pedophile who is not a rapist and in fact only realizes that he is  (nontheless still) abusing children (or in danger of abusing them) when confronted with a girl's (he's taken an interest in) description of her parental molesting/rape situation at home.

John's threads sometimes  certainly master the fine art of living up to (admittedly high) expectations - not!!!

Sensibly, Herr Geiger, your parents must have been worried that the, errrm, "dress sense" of Messrs Holder and Hill (Lea and the drummer always looked alright) might rub off in the wrong way on you.

And how prophetic your old folks were!   ;)
