Bass Amps & Effects / Re: need help with 115
« on: January 26, 2009, 04:37:54 PM »
thanks guys, I was thinking the same thing.  I just got the cabinet yesterday from a forum member.  He has agreed to buy me a replacement speaker for it, but with the price of them, I wanted to make sure there was nothing else it could be before he spends the money.

Bass Amps & Effects / need help with 115
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:08:12 PM »
I have an avatar 115.  cabinet looks brand new.  its loaded with a first generation eminence deltalite.  At low volume it sounds very clean, a little lacking on the low end unless you crank the bass all the way up on the amp.  Anything above 1.5 to 2 on the amp and you have to play VERY gently or you'll distort the horn and the speaker.  I have an old carvin 210 with speakers that are LITERALLY coated with elmers glue hold the cones together.  with the same bass, and the same amp with everything set the same except for the volume, I can get considerably louder with the glued speakers than I can with the avatar without distortion.  I can't even turn the avatar up loud enough to play along with the stereo without it distorting.
i just traded a carvin 810 that had MAYBE 2 hours of use for these avatars... the guy seemed really decent. I'd like to think he didnt rip me off.  Is there anything it could be other than a bad speaker?

Bass Amps & Effects / Re: Let's see your rig!

wow, nice rigs on here guys :]
I just got a new rig... well new cabs anyway.  Unfortunately I didnt try them out before I got them.... got a 15 that distorts way too easily, only good at low volume...a horn that distorts easier than that... and some REALLY scratchy pots.  traded for a year old carvin 810 that had MAYBE 2 hours of use.  Anyway, I really like the cabinets, i just need to get speakers now :[

thanks for the advice guys... looks like I have a body to sell, hehe

35
oh yeah, and I got this too

I'm not sure what the body is actually except that its a guitar body from the 60's. I got it from a forum member.  It is a full hollow, bolt on.
I like the style of it, its just so tiny :\  I want a monster body.  lets just say, my ripper and t-40 are what I would consider an average size bass for me.

Greco did some flipped reverse bodies.

I saw this recently that I thought was cool

A Espirt 4 bass

wow, reversed or not, I think what really looks great on those is the angled "ridges"

What factors do you guys weigh in when deciding whether or not to undertake a project?  I've been wanting a hollowbody or semi hollowbody forever.  I recently got a great deal on a hollow body for the project, just the body, but the more I look at it, the more I realize its a LOT smaller than what I want.  I wanted a big monster body, but I've got electrics bigger than this one :[  So, should I still try to get the parts to put it together and refinish the body? or would that be a bad idea since it will be smaller than what I wanted?  So I guess what I'm asking, is how would YOU decide between holding out for what you really want, or settling and working with what you have?

so this might be a LOT more comfortable, even if its not nearly as appealing visually?

That's ugly!

When I read your description I was thinking 'bout a ZZ Top kinda bass. I would've liked that!
that's what I was expecting too... was hoping to see a furry explorer body style

is it something that you play a LOT, or does the size limit you to playing it only occassionally? or for only part of a set?

that would be awesome, metallic pinstripe,  I've toyed with the idea of using chrome on a black bass

Other Bass Brands / a question for hollowbody players
« on: August 01, 2008, 07:48:28 AM »
I've been noticing how many different sizes of semi and hollow body basses there are out there.
Anybody played large bodies and small bodies and have opinions on which ones more usable?  Are the larger bodies more awkward to play to where they don't get played as much?  Is there a big difference in sound?
My problem is a psychological one right now.  When I see the ENORMOUS hollowbodies I think they are the coolest thing ever.  A  bas version of anything that brian setzer plays... or a bass version of Dave Grohl's pellham blue hollowbody.  Those are the most visually appealing things to me.
BUT, would I be sacrificing playability by going with something THAT big?

pinstripe also makes a GREAT imitation binding :]

I've been noticing that there are a lot more appealing body choices for hollow boy guitars than there are for basses.  There are obviously fewer bolt on choices than set necks.. but there are still more bolt on hollow body guitars at decent prices than there are hollow body basses in the same price range
anyway, as long as the neck fit the pocket properly, and the bridge was installed in the right place, the pickups replaced with bass pickups.  That should work and yield a playable instrument, right?
or is there something I'm not thinking about?
